A lot of people tend to miss this on their first watch but, Coralines parents are acting the way they are partially due to being stressed as hell. Money related issues due to moving, the Moms medical bill considering the accident she was in, and not having much money for food/groceries. Most of it is somewhat subtle but yea. They dont hate her, but the mom especially comes off as a jerk at the start.

i feel like most people i see watch this movie are way too hard on the parents. its not framed like theyre ignoring her for no good reason. i feel like the movie does a good job of creating a realistic situation where a kid would feel neglected and ignored by their parents without it being an abusive or unloving situation.

Especially when you put into context that this movie was made, released, and about the 2007-2009 recession in the US. Also the movie was made pretty much in coralline’s perspective so the parents seems extra mean because sim sure that’s how any kid would interpret it. I was a kid during this time (pretty much coralline’s age) so I 100% sided with her on everything but now as an adult it’s horrifying and I’m more understanding of the parents☺️

Kids actually have a problem with thinking about the consequences of their actions because they are suppose to learn about it growing up. Which is why it's so important for parents to be present. I get her parents are stressed because of work but you still can't forget about the child you chose to have.

I mean yes, but the stress of moving into a new house can cause them to just focus on work especially if it is due soon. And kids always want the attention of their parents often leaving the parents with no time for themselves. And they don't understand that they need time to work without being distracted.

What I realized in hindsight of this movie is that the Other Mother designed other dad and other Wybie to genuinely care about Coraline. Coraline wanted a friend and loving parents. The other people she wasn’t close to and tbh, she didn’t want to be close to them, so they were made just to impress her. And that was probably the flaw in her manipulation of making these two actually care about her.

I want to just point out that she needed to wait for like three days for them to finish the gardening catalog like they just moved AND they have a deadline at the basically same time of course they are not doing great but any other time before or after they are actually great and fun parents. It's a shame the movie did not include those moments from the book with Coraline and her dad hanging out and such ..

I wouldn't say that Coraline's parents are neglectful, they are just very busy and by the end of the film they begin to pay more attention to Coraline because now that they have handed in their book on botany they have the time to pay attention to her. Coraline (as most kids) also have a very self-centred personality and it can become overbearing on most parents constantly having to care, work, clean, cook etc. for their children all the time. Also, at her age 11-12 is the years that kids start being less dependant on their parental guardians and start rebelling, which is what Coraline does the entire movie. So yeah, I personally wouldn't call is neglect just parents being seperate beings from their children.

I love the music, writing, shots, stop motion animation, theories etc. Even now after watching it, it stays in my mind and creeps me out while trying to sleep more than the typical live action rated R horror movie.

To bring some knowledge on the movie, they did consider making it live action but thankfully it was stop motion, all of the puppets were sold years later the highest ones being the other mother dolls, Mr. B’s skin is blue because of a chemical fallout thing with a war I believe, check on that one, and Wyborne was not in the book, also this is based on a book. Glad you enjoyed it, I love this movie now but it terrified me as a kid

I still have the novel this movie was based on. I honestly like the book more, as good as the movie is, mainly because Coraline's better in the book? I mean Wybie didn't exist in the book so she basically had to talk to herself and figure things out on her own and with the cat. Also a lot of stuff was creepier in the book -- there was a whole chapter where Coraline heads down into the other world's basement and finds her Other Father as a formless, blind mass.

I loved this movie as a kid. I was a weird kid that liked watching my mom do her dissections for nursing and horror was a love of mine. I was 8 when we first watched it. Tim Burton is a staple and the like similar gothic horror spike at the time was what I loved for lol. (Coraline director is Henry Selick) My brother was like 6 at the time and very jumpy but “I’m a big strong boy I won’t be scared”. He was scared but only because of the little jumpscares. I still love this movie (and the book) as an adult tho. It’s a masterpiece.
