Alright alright guys... embarrassingly enough I definitely forget that the building was the notre dame. Genuinely didn’t have the slightest clue when i filmed this. No I didn’t no what a catacomb was either. Until now. I also now know that gypsies is a slur. So you can all stop saying “google it”. I wasn’t trying to be offensive or anything I just really didn’t know. I thought I made it very clear in the video. But sometimes I just don’t understand how ya come up with the stuff ya comment about me lol. But I get it. I’ll have to do disclaimers for every video clearly. None of this was fake. Just 100% lack of knowledge. Thanks for watching I do appreciate it! See ya in the next video! #bingers

i swear your viewers set you up suggesting this movie without explaining some stuff first, and like not to be prejudiced, but you are from the US so i'm not suprised if you weren't aware that it was a slur since the romani people are mostly in europe, still like the reaction tho. we all learn something new everyday 😅 the trouble with being a reactor on youtube is definitely the amount of people who are waiting to pounce on your for any mistake or lack of knowledge

Why people can't just be kind I don't know. I mean, I only know about the catacombs beneath Paris purely because of the film As Above, So Below which I think is way more embarrassing than just not knowing altogether lol x

Dude you even said first time watching and you knew nothing about it. The point is that you learned from it afterwards. And gypsies as a slur is only coming from the Christian/Catholic church. Actual gypsies don't see it as that nowadays. I'm just glad you learned something today. It's kinda why I wish people cared about history a bit more - even moreso when you were school. Bit to be also fair. History in school is designed to be memorized and not all true. Plus the white washing and lack of understanding from other backgrounds from different countries. But hey. I'd rather people be learning about it now than never.

In the song hellfire when Frollo says it’s not my fault, the background voices that say “me a culpa” are his conscience, and me a culpa is Latin for “it’s my fault” so while he is saying it’s not his fault, his guilt is telling him that he’s lying to himself and that he is the one to blame for his own actions, thoughts, and impulses
@IromoBeric
@IromoBeric 3 жыл бұрын
It's also very interesting that at the end of that song when the guard comes in to tell Frollo that Esmeralda has escaped, the guard is bathed in light. It seems symbolic: The guard telling Frollo that Esmeralda has escaped is Frollo's last chance for redemption. If he was seeking forgiveness and redemption, he should have stopped pursuing Esmeralda at that point. But, he tells the guard to get out and turns back towards the fire. He sealed his fate.

Disney movies having kids locked in towers forever is probably based on things that actually happen. People with physical or mental disabilities were not welcome in society up until very recently. A child born with a disability or deformity would commonly be drowned or left in the wilderness to die. Families who could afford to support a family member who was not able to work or who would "embarrass" the family by being seen would sometimes keep the disabled in an attic, cellar, shed, etc., somewhere where they could not be seen or heard instead of killing them outright. Often there was no record of these people even existing until they were dead. One high profile case is Rosemary Kennedy, the sister of JFK.

@DoranGale
@DoranGale 3 жыл бұрын
They still can, but it wouldn’t be right when the trauma of the fire is so fresh. They need to help rebuild Notre Dame if the movie is that important to them. Are you American too? 9/11/2001, the Twin Towers were destroyed. All movies in production that featured the towers edited and them out, out of respect for those mourning. No one was killed when Notre Dame burned, but it was still a traumatic event for much of the world. Imagine what it would feel like to watch Notre Dame burn again on screen, just a couple years later. If Disney execs care about anything but money, they’ll tread carefully.

True... That would be difficult to see like any movie that had the twin towers in it b4 9/11 😔😔😔 The idea of the movie being a way 2 rebuild & protect Notre Dame is still a good one though; if Disney & France's government work together to do it right. @@jasminejames1090 Paris has already been pledged enough money to restore Notre Dame, and the only reason it's been delayed is Covid. I don't know if Disney is one of the donors or not, but if they didn't jump on board right away, they missed the boat and Paris doesn't need their money now. Private donors eager to restore one of the most iconic pieces of architecture in the world have funded the entire project. I love that you keep calling him FroYo Since others already explained who the Romani people are and that the term gypsy is actually offensive, I will share that the Court of Miracles was also a real place. In the film, Quasi and Phoebus travel through the catacombs of Paris which are underground tunnels filled with skeletons, mostly but not all victims of the plague. It's basically a tunnel system that is also a mass grave. And yes, if you ever go to Paris, you can take a tour, highly recommend. The Court of Miracles however was a name where the homeless, wanted criminals, and many of the outcasted people in Paris lived during the time period, including persecuted Romani people. Many survived begging or performing on the streets of Paris and the hide out got it's name because, if you are begging to survive, people are more likely to give if you're visibly disabled in some way, so beggars would pretend to be blind or injured and when they returned to the hide out, it was a "miracle" because they could see again or walk again, hence the lyrics of the song. You were 100% accurate, they were referencing lying. Can't judge though, considering the impossible situation so many were in.

#Bingers , who framed Roger Rabbit, The Mask of Zorro. And you right about Disney about keeping Kids trapped, Do you think Disney has the best villains than actually movies? Also they throw the word gipsies because that is what they called the Roma/Romani an ethnic group in Europe. They use the word because they thought they were from Egypt due to having similar skin color. And they are wrong with using the word because it is actually from India. And in those medieval times (in the movie) they think the “Gypsies” had some type of magic like witchcraft. So in the movie, they throw it around to try to insult and hurt them, but the “Gypsies” don’t care.

And your assumption that Esmeralda will fall for Quasimodo isn’t TOO far off from the real thing...

@Mel An I wanted to reply to this with a link, but KZbin won't let me. So instead, I'll post a small blurb from the page I was going to link to with the disclaimer that this is not my writing and a recommendation that you Google "The Mindful Mermaid: Why It's Time to Stop Saying Gypsy" to read the full thing: “Gypsy” is a racial slur for the Roma or Romani people with Romanian origins and originally of Indian decent. They speak Romani, which is a language similar Hindi or Persian. When the Roma people left India in the 11th century, the Europeans mistook them as Egyptian. This is where the slur “gypsy” comes from. This is the word that was then used to describe the Roma people through centuries of oppression. The Catholic Church oppressed and restricted Roma from purchasing land. The Hungarian and Romanian nobles enslaved the Roma during the 15th century. In 15th century Germany, the government ordered average citizens to kill gypsies living among them as well. Eastern Europe, Spain, and Italy expelled the Roma, forcing them to disperse throughout Europe. Eastern Europe freed them of slavery in the mid-1800s, but the Scandinavians launched a sterilization programs against them in the 20th century. Then, the Nazis killed as many as 220,000 Roma people in WW2. As William O’Connor wrote for the Daily Beast, “It is a story of suffering that parallels the trials of Jews in Europe. However, while the Holocaust has at the very least made Europe grapple with its history of anti-Semitism, there has been no such reckoning for the Romani. While the Romani were also targeted by the Nazis and sent to die by the thousands in concentration camps, the post-war German government did not recognize them as victims of racial persecution.” Europeans used the word “gypsy” as a racial slur throughout these centuries to justify the discrimination and persecution of the Roma people. It’s crucial for travelers to understand that these origins still have a direct negative impact today.

At the time the film is set, and in the the 90s when the film was made, 'gypsy' wasn't considered as negatively as it is now. The term began because Europeans thought they were from Egypt (in the same way 'Indian' to refer to a Native American person came from the incorrect assumption that they are from India - yet Native Americans adopted the term for themselves and still use it to this day in many places). The movie itself is trying to illustrate (in a way children can understand) the horrific persecution that was endured by the Romani people at the time. Sadly too few people know the full extent of it, but this film was trying to shed light on their ordeal. It's an amazing movie, and has arguably both the strongest Disney female (Esmeralda) and the strongest Disney male (Quasimodo) to date. They're strong because even though they have no money, no status, and no 'power', and also have been tormented their entire lives, they retained their kindness and their humanity, and are ready to fight and to die if it means protecting those weaker or less fortunate than themselves💚

This movie had a lot of great moments tbh, but two of my favorites are when Phoebus rallies the Parisians against Frollo by shouting "Frollo has persecuted our people! Ransacked our city! Now he has declared war on Notre Dame herself! Will we allow it?!!" because I hate how in a lot of movies citizens are always for some reason horrible people, but this movie really has the essence of a french citizen, and they refuse to stand by when Frollo attacks their sacred ground. My other favorite scene is when Frollo says "And He shall smite the wicked and plunge them into the fiery pit!" and immediately the part of Notre Dame he was standing on crumbles and he himself falls into the molten steel. It's unclear whether this was supposed to be God or Notre Dame, but either way, a poetic ending for him.

I think it's telling this time around that Billy seemed so invested in the film that he didn't make a ton of jokes that broke immersion (not that they are bad, but it was interesting to see him so immersed in the film compared to some other more lighthearted films). Frollo is truly the most sinister Disney Villain. There's so much truth to the thought process he goes through that results in the stalking, assault, and even murder of real people in day to day life. "I can't have them, so no one can" is the very real mentality of abusive partners, regardless of gender or sexual orientation. "It's not my fault; they're too tempting." Another thing predators often say. The song "Hellfire" is immensely profound. In Frollo's mind, it's surely Esmeralda's fault he's tempted and so she has to deliver or be harshly punished for not following through. And it's "Not my fault!" ("Mea culpa," the choir responds, literally meaning "My Fault") "I'm not to blame," (Mea culpa) It's the gypsy girl; the witch who set this flame, (regarding his need to find and have her being so consuming, he burns Paris) (Choir: Mea maxima culpa ((My greatest fault)), If in God's plan, He made the devil so much stronger than a man." AKA, "They were asking for it." Whether they're a sex worker, someone wearing something whoever decides they should not, someone flirting, any number of things, and sometimes someone doing nothing other than existing; some sick people feel entitled to their body. And in Frollo's mind, it's the devil's work which is honestly terrifyingly close to real life situations.

Great commentary! I feel like this movie was such a great one, it was underrated for so long for being so dark. Also fun fact in the original story Quasimodo is actually a product of incest, that’s why he looks as different as he did as a newborn. It is common amongst Gypsies in old text at least to have relations with cousins. Frollo being a “religious” man despised their ways of life, deeming them as unholy. Then obviously his conflicting interests/desires for esmeralda made him hate them even more for being desirable. Anywho! Great film and soundtrack! :)

The Romani (or the politically incorrect term, gypsies) are often on the move. They are a people who has had difficulty putting down roots. Because they are always on the move, some Romani decided that the easiest way to being in money would to be conmen and thieves. It's hard to catch someone when you can't find them. And that negative stereotype has been applied to all of them (along with politically incorrect name of gypsy).

@@donyates7300 according to my Romani relatives, that is accurate. It's OK for them to refer to themselves using that term. They often do as a way of reclaiming it. Other people? Not coo.

@@donyates7300 I knew when I watched, and I feel like it has always been a deeper story to me because of that. The whole movie touches really heavily on real life racism and anti Semitism, as well as just flat out the anti Roma sentiment in Europe at that time.

This was a movie that Disney took such a gamble on. It's their darkest movie thats FOR KIDS and its beautiful. Imagine them trying to make this NOW with all the moms that try to cancel anything "controversial" so glad I grew up watching movies like this

“Out There” is one of my all time favorite disney songs. Tom Hulce does the speaking and singing voice for Quasimodo. The gp probably know him from Amadeus (he played Amadeus) or Parenthood but he’s done a lot of stage work. He hasn’t acted in a while but been a producer on a lot of plays/musicals.

#Bingers Yes! finally I enjoyed you realizing how dark this movie was and how terrible Frollo was (even though his villain song is one of the best) and yeah there are definitely a lot of Tangled comparisons. Also, after Quasimodo saw them two kissing usually its pretty sad, but you're commentary had me rolling on the floor XD If you wanna see dark with a catchy yet marvelous soundtrack, you really should watch THE PRINCE OF EGYPT next. For humor, a great soundtrack and great storytelling, I'd suggest How To Train your Dragon and its sequels one of the few trilogies that gets better with each movie. Also still hoping to see Legally Blonde, Adam's Family Values(dark humor for days) and twilight (the last one for the roasting)

15:34 The moment Quasimodo raises Esmeralda and shouts "Sanctuary!" is him utilizing the "Law of Sanctuary" where, by law, as long as they are within the premises of the Church, no one can claim them, harm them, or arrest them. During Medieval Europe, the Church becomes a safezone once they've uttered those words or "claimed sanctuary" and they are granted this by a priest or someone inside the Church. This is also why Quasimodo's mom was trying to claim Sanctuary while running away from Frollo in the first section of the movie, because there she can be safe and protected. The thing is, in this scene, Frollo breaks the law of sanctuary. It's even worse in the stage musical where they were more faithful to the book and didn't make Frollo a judge; he was a priest (which makes Hellfire 10x more creepy). Frollo, in the stage musical, says "I am the archdeacon of this cathedral, I negate the laws of sanctuary!" which is a blatant abuse of his power, and really shows how far he can go when it comes to his desire for Esmeralda. Additionally, the Latin prayers that were sung in the background seemed like a narration of the scene unfolding during that whole Sanctuary portion and is brilliant songwriting from Menken & Schwartz. "Libera me Domine" which translates to "Free me Lord" being sung once Quasimodo breaks himself free from the chains, "Sanctus" or "Holy" accompanying Quasi shouting "Sanctuary!" cementing the holy representation of the Church he was claiming sanctuary in AND making it seem like Notre Dame was truly on his side (The bells ringing with Quasi while he breaks free from the chains somehow show that relationship too). Haha sorry for the ramble, these are just some of the tidbits and fascinating details I noticed that give that further edge, depth, and beauty to the film. I absolutely ADORE this movie, and I really appreciate your genuine and fun reaction to it! ♥️ Looking forward to the next one ✨

11:11 ADDITIONALLY, (I'm so sorry for nerding up about this HAHA) again with the Latin players in juxtaposition with the lyrics, I absolutely LOVE this section of writing in the song. The Latin prayer sung with Hellfire was the Confiteor ["I confess to almighty God..."] is usually said during that portion in the Catholic Church's mass where you confess and express penance for your sins. This prayer is also an interesting song choice to be paired with Hellfire because the song seems like a "confession" to Mary (Frollo singing "Beata Maria," as if in conversation with Mary about his conflicting feelings) but is very ironic because Frollo is in complete denial that HE is the cause of his wrong feelings/actions, AND isn't taking any blame for it. His blind righteousness can even be seen here: Frollo: It's not my fault! Choir: Mea culpa (Through my fault) Frollo: I'm not to blame, Choir: Mea culpa (Through my fault) Frollo: It is the ----- girl, the witch who set this flame! ***sorry censored the slur :")) Choir: Mea maxima culpa (Through my most grievous fault) The choir, or I guess they can be interpreted as Mary or God, is showing that yes, Frollo IS at fault, he IS to blame, but Frollo denies it. But I also interpret this that in a way, the choir is Frollo's inner conflicting feelings, that Frollo KNOWS he's wrong, that he should stop planning whatever plot he has in "claiming" Esmeralda, but he doesn't, because he's the all-powerful, almighty Judge Claude Frollo, he IS the law, and he is never wrong. ANYWAY THAT'S ALL Frollo is just an interesting villain and Hellfire was a perfectly written song for him akjsjd thanks for reading my rambling 😅😅😅

The Hunchback of Notre Dame was a novel by Victor Hugo (who also wrote Les Miserables - but if you aren't familiar with that either, lets just basically say he dabbled in a lot of dark and tragic themes). It was definitely a very strange pick for source material on Disney's behalf, lol. But they knocked it out of the park in my opinion. They Disney-fied it, of course, but a lot of the themes are still present. They were brave to do it.
