@andrewlindenfeld62222 жыл бұрын
Every time I set up my big imaging refractor at home, then 50 miles south at my parents, or 80 miles north at my dark site, I have to adjust altitude accordingly to get accurately polar aligned. The fact that Polaris moves up or down in the sky based off your latitude proves we live on a sphere, just that one fact alone… It’s so fascinating to me that even in just a 50 or 80 mile drive, you can actually see the difference in a stars altitude because I literally moved over the curvature of the Earth.
@joeshmoe79672 жыл бұрын
Exactly!! My best spot for deep sky imaging is about 70 minutes away and I absolutely have to adjust my tracker. Even the visual location of the big dipper is remarkably different. Enough that is blows my mind. Actual straight line distance is 60km, but it is enough. Placement of the objects/constellations year over year, also proves the earth moves in an orbit. Flatties just don't spend enough time outside at night. If the did they would realize they are on the wrong side of the argument. - Cheers

Cut and paste. In the heart of downtown Tucson, Arizona, a city of nearly 500,000, one can view the Milky Way with the naked eye. Tucson and Pima County first adopted outdoor lighting ordinances in 1972 in an effort to provide standards so that night lighting did not interfere with nearby astronomical observatories. Is this old or are you just in Tucson often? I live close enough that I should be able to see you, but, y'know, flerspective; and mountains. Y'ever fly into Scottsdale or Deer Valley airports, presumably both well under 100 nautical miles north of Tucson? I live between the two, but far enough from either that they're usually no bother. Recently though, had a Gulfstream departing Scottsdale descend through low clouds on a rainy day, looking like it was going to stall right into my house, before spinning up to warp 9 and disappearing. The whole bottom of the craft facing right at me, but from due east instead of, uh, above, and seemingly no more than like 300m away. It was like a two-second event but it seriously scared the piss outta me. Phoenix-Gateway Mesa airport is part of my metro area and I fly from there a lot but it's almost like driving to Tucson, takes an hour to get there _without_ traffic. On behalf of all Arizonans, I'd like to apologize for all of our stupid people. Doesn't seem quite as obvious in Flagstaff or Tucson as it is in Phoenix, likely because they have decent universities. We natives are some serious dumbs, ASU basically trades time and money for pretending that you did some learnin' to get certificates.
