Thondimudhalum was a fairly simple story but storytelling was top-notch. Adhuku rendu reason. One is that Malayalam actors and film makers respect their audience. Not just that, inga edukura madhri mass kaatren nu enathayachum edutha ellam anga odaadhu. They tried that and failed several times. Second is that they're compelled to make their movies more interesting to compete with other film industries for wider reach of their films. They don't have the same budget as Tollywood, Kollywood or Bollywood. So their focus is more on storytelling. And that's exactly why all our attention is turning to Malayalam now.
