My grandfather was a child during WW2 and he had a little baby brother who also died, because they didn't have enough to eat. My grandfather had a stuffed doll he named after his brother and he kept it his whole life. He died in 2019. I hope he got to see his brother again. I wish there were no wars anymore.

Whenever the characters are in red lighting, those are their spirits. The ending shot is them looking out over the modern city, showing how Japan recovered while remembering the innocent souls lost in the war. Beautiful film. Heartbreaking, but beautiful.

The ending of this movie makes me bawl my eyes out. I start crying as soon as she starts to show signs of starvation. I’ve only watched it a few times because of that. But it is a truly powerful film. Fun fact: it was originally shown as a double feature with My Neighbor Totoro.

Ah, yes, one of the greatest films I will never watch again. I love getting emotional watching films, but I can't think of a single one that made me cry nearly as much as this one.

What makes it even more heartbreaking is that this anime was based on a true story, The author and his little sister really did go through that nightmare as kids during World War II. The anime was adapted from a 1967 literary award winning story of the same name by the Japanese novelist Akiyuki Nosaka. Nosaka completely based the two main characters directly off of himself and his little sister who really did die of starvation exactly in the way depicted in the movie. Just as in the anime, the novelist deliberately kills off the character representing himself thus symbolizing that he wishes he had died with his little sister in World War II to atone for failing to save her because for many decades after the war, he always blamed himself for not being able to save her from starvation and suffered with the survivor’s guilt all his life. Both the original 1967 semi-autobiographical award-winning masterpiece Grave Of The Fireflies and the equally heart rending 1988 anime film adaptation from Studio Ghibli were dedicated in her honor, in the loving memory of his precious little sister. In the years since the war he had gradually picked up the pieces of his shattered life, continuing to be strong in honor of her memory, going on to make something of himself in ways he could never have imagined, not only just as an extremely successful award winning novelist but even soaring to new heights of newfound success as also a singer, a lyricist and eventually even becoming a highly respected member of The Japanese Parliament during the 1980s after winning election in 1983. Sadly his career would go on hiatus after suffering a massive stroke in 2003. Although deeply affected by the stroke, he would bounce back and continue on as a respected journalist, writing columns for a prominent Japanese newspaper. On December 9, 2015 he would finally pass away, dying at the ripe old age of 85, having achieved more in this life than most people could ever hope to do in a single lifetime and having done it all despite the early childhood trauma that he had been subjected to during The Second World War.

"Grave of the Fireflies" is one of my all time favorite Studio Ghibli films! Especially because it's one of the few anime movies that takes place in Japan during war times, There aren't too many anime movies about Japan during WW2. And only one's I know of are "Grave of the Fireflies," "Barefoot Gen" and "In This Corner of the World" two of which highly involve the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

One of the main lessons I took from this film is that regardless of your circumstance or mindset (because I know there are cultures or mindsets that are really big on appearing unwavering, unfailing, and not weak), you should always ask for help if needed, no matter how you think it makes you look. Both children perished, largely in part due to Seita's pride.

I absolutely agree. Some people blame their aunt, but it's war, she's harsh, but she's right. Seita should have swallowed his pride and stay, at least they could have survived, though I can't really blame him, he's just a boy and sadly he made wrong decision.

I'm not so sure that would have saved them both. The aunt was intentionally giving them both less food and worse quality food than her own husband and daughter and Satsuko was already showing signs of starvation while they were living with the aunt. The food rations also got smaller and smaller the worse the war got so even if they had stayed there would still have been less and less food to go around. Because of that I doubt Satsuko would have survived. In addition, in the live action version of this movie where we get to see more of the aunts perspective, we find out that she and her family is starving as well. That is the reason she gives Seita and Satsuko less food. She can't stand to feed them while her own child is starving, aka she is choosing to save her child over them. The aunt also ends up starving to death herself in an attempt to continue to keep her daughter feed making it even more unlikely that Seita and Satsuko would have survived, even if they had stayed.

I have a good story about this one - I was watching this movie in history class during my junior year of high school, and when it got to the point when Setsuko died, I was crying so hard. Two girls next to me asked if I was crying, and handed me a box of tissues.

I always get so frustrated with the brother, unable to feed her sister because he couldn't swallow his pride. But the real person's guilt was what led him to write about it, so of course the story is told because he was aware of his faults. To be fair, he was just a kid himself, trying to do right like the father he had so much faith in.

This movie destroys me everytime I watch it. The scene where the music starts playing as her brother tries to cheer her up, after the mother got injured always brings me to tears. And you seemed to missed it but the scene where they put the bandaged body with all the maggots to the ground, that was their mother. And from the beginning the movie starts with him saying "That was the day I died". So Myazaki wanted to let the people know, there will be no happy ending. And because war is horrible, it makes no difference between man or child. That was the sad truth of this movie. Thanks for your great reaction. I was literally in tears.

This isn’t the easiest movie to watch let alone an anime. But great reaction, I totally cried watching it once again. This is a true story about a brother and his younger sister trying to survive Second World War in Japan. Saito’s (not sure if I spelled her name correctly) death kills me every time. This movie isn’t for the faint hearted. Great reaction! Can’t wait to see what movie you’ll do next!

The whole idea of anime newbies told they “have” to watch Fireflies literally dates back to the very birth of US anime in the early 90’s, when Fireflies was not only the only Studio Ghibli film that had yet made it to VHS, it was one of the few (clean) classic features you could watch on subtitled VHS, period. If you hear a fan nagging you to watch Akira, Ghost in the Shell or Fireflies, he’s probably passing down a tradition another fan nagged him when he was a newbie in the 00’s, and so on, as great-great-grand-fan. 😄

Once upon a time I was living with my aunt who loved that I had all of these foreign cartoons that she'd never seen, so I told her to just go nuts and watch whatever she wanted from my collection. I have a pretty huge collection of DVDs and always loved movies, so I had tons, and she would just watch a ton of them and we'd talk about the movie(s) she'd watched when I got home from work or whatever that day. I came home from work one night and she had just started watching this one and I was like "Uh... this one is sad... like REALLY REALLY sad... you sure you can deal with it?" and she was all "Oh, yeah, I love Bambi and this can't be much worse than that one!" So I was like "... OK......" We watched it together and it got to the "No Place Like Home" sequence and she just fucking lost it and was fumbling with the remote and I had to get up and stop the VCR cause she was begging for it to stop. Like, full-on can't talk or breathe because she's sobbing and like "Can't... make it stop... STOP IT STOP STOP!!!" I felt for her, but I couldn't help but laugh after I shut it off like "It's worse than Bambi, right?" My cousin came home like two minutes after we stopped watching it and she was still bawling and he was like "WTF DID YOU DO TO MY MOM!?" He was so pissed. We were laughing about it the next day, but that was a rough night. I love this movie, tho. It's one of those that you can't watch often, but I've seen it many times and the bits that always get to me are the bit where he finds her in the field and the bit where he's about to close the basket before he cremates her. He just stops and looks at her for a few seconds. Gets me every time. I bought the "Grave Of The Fireflies Image Album" back in the day and it includes some extra music and what I think are off-cuts or something, but it's genuinely amazing. I used to let it sit on repeat when I was studying or programming. The official soundtrack has actual audio clips from the movie with dialogue and stuff, but the image album is just music, and it's pretty incredible. If you can get your hands on a digital copy for cheap or if you want to blow $50 on some vinyl, it's pretty fuckin worth it.

The intentional killing of enough civilians, not "collateral damage" or targeting military infrastructure, but the intentional killing of civilians and the destruction of civilian infrastructure to inflict as much pain and suffering on survivors, so that they would surrender.

Ok now, this has been on my "to-watch" list for a long while but it does not look like I am going to get easy access to the whole movie anytime soon (I usually like to watch the movie myself before seeing a reaction). SO, despite the fact I USUALLY need the context of the entire movie to fully respond to tearjerker moments... your "Hachi- a Dog's Tale" reaction (and "Land Before Time", AND "My Girl" reactions) all made me cry my eyes out and those weren't "full movies", so... I am going for THIS one when I get the house to myself :P (You do a really nice job with including enough of the movie!). Oh lord, this one is a tough watch. I'm sure others have already mentioned that the writer of the film lived this story, but with TWO little sisters that died of starvation, and he admitted he did not do enough to prevent their deaths. A lot of survivor's guilt channeled into this story, and by writing the main character's death and their reunion in the afterlife, it feels like he found some absolution for what he felt he failed to do.

Best anti-war movie ever. What makes it so tragic was that this is based off true events The real"Seita" wrote a short story as a way to help cope with his feelings over the situation and change a few parts of the story. But most of it was true. And the ending of the story was EXACTLY how it happened in real life (including all of the dialogue.)

I have ever once managed to actually watch this film through. After that I did watch people like you reacting to it, but that is a layer removed. I could never stomach watching it again. It is beautiful in it's way, but it is and will always be a tragedy.It's the daily tragedy of the people caught in the middle of big powers clashing.

It's a brilliant film about the effect of war on innocent children. However, having been living in a country at war for almost two years now, and knowing my feelings towards the invaders (and their children too), I can understand why this film is banned in some countries, after all the atrocities committed by imperial Japan during WW2.

I've never seen this film myself, but I've heard plenty of other KZbinrs talk about it. I'm sure I'll really like it for its animation and story just like the other Studio Ghibli movies I've seen. Also, if you're interested in watching more anime, I would recommend Demon Slayer. It's a relatively new anime with INSANE visuals, fun characters, and an interesting world. I haven't watched all of it yet, but I've definitely liked what I've seen. I will tell you, though, be ready to watch three or four whole episodes before some baddies finally get taken out; the narrative is kinda frustrating like that sometimes 😅

Because even tho it's technically a kid's show, a LOT of adults (including myself) love it to. A movie I would want you to react to is a Julia Roberts movie called 'Stepmom'.

I remember watching Grave of the Fireflies a couple years ago and this movie brought me to tears and haunted me for days afterwards. Then I watched the movie again with my mom and she was also brought to tears (and I got emotional for a second time too). I actually remember reading the full story on a Japanese Studio Ghibli website years ago when I was little and decades later as an adult, I understand why people are so deeply moved by this film. I'm so glad you chose to react to Grave of the Fireflies! P.S. A great movie: Absolutely A feel good movie: Definitely not. To quote Roger Ebert: "Grave of the Fireflies forces us to reconsider what can be done in animated movies." This movie is more heartbreaking than 90% of live movies. Btw, it is based on a true story.

Is that a different English dub? I've seen this movie multiple times over in the english dub and some of the acting and even a few words were different in this version.

It is never said what happened to the father in the movie but we did obturated their navy sssoooo yeah he probably died. I forget if that is how the person who wrote this father died.
