See, in the book it was portrayed *a lot* better. As someone who was outed (not blackmailed, ofc, thank god) I have to say it was one of the worst experiences. Especially since it was done to hurt me, not accidentally, or to “help” me. Anyway, in the book Simon using Abbey to hide his sexuality & sort of pin her off on his blackmailer was shown way more emotionally. Although I 100% understand Simon & don’t think he’s a bad person, what he did was wrong & Abbey had every right to distance herself from him why she was still processing. The key difference in the book was that Simon had been outed & she had supported him 100%. It was only after he was outed that she found out about him using her & sort of cut him off for a short while. The only character I hate in the book but understand a lot better in the movie is Leah. Fucking hate her. She’s annoying.

There's a deleted scene where after Simon gets outed, Nick takes him to a gay club to cheer him up, so it seems his friends are still on his side, and when Simon returns home drunk, his parents aren't sure how to handle his behavior this time because they feel he might be going through something and not talking about it. Afterward is when Simon's friends gang up on him, and I believe it's interpreted to be weeks later, after their school break, when they've not seen him but have had time to figure out that he'd been "scheming" them (so they think). I'm actually disappointed the gay club scene didn't make the final cut because it gives us a chance to see how his friends and family are trying to react to the situation, while just immediately jumping to all his friends turning on him seems really forced.

Sorry, but I just can’t agree. Yeah I like how scenarists develop lesbian characters because actually it’s usually deep in the feeling development too. How ever, I feel like instead of seeing characters with different sexualities in all movies, I’d prefer to see diverse characters. Like real characters with a deep personality, no matter their gender, their sexuality or skin. I mean, as a spectator I would like to appreciate a person for who he/she is, and not for the community he/she belongs to. And there begins real equality. (Sorry for my bad English)

I read the book that Love Simon was based on, and his friend's reactions were so much better in the book. Abby was a little upset, but unlike the movie, she's not a complete jerk about it. She basically says that she understands why he did it, but that she needs space from him for a while. Leah's not in love with him, but she does get mad at him for a completely different reason; I think it was because Nick, Abby, and Simon hang out and intentionally don't invite her and she finds out about it. I don't remember Nick's reaction, but if there was one, it probably wasn't bad since I remember they hang out at the carnival like nothing's wrong. I had mixed feelings about the casting. I thought Simon, Blue, and Abby were perfectly cast, but I'm kind of bitter that they cast a beautiful thin girl as Leah when she's fat in the books. There's already limited roles for plus-size actresses and it would have been nice to see a different body type on screen. There were a lot of things I liked better in the book to be honest, but the intended audience for Love Simon was a lot more broad than the intended audience for Simon vs the Homo Sapien Agenda. Other than the Leah casting, my only complaint is that Bram's personality was completely different. I loved how sweet and dorky he was in the books, and in the movie he's a popular party guy. I love the movie, though, Like you said, it really captured the spirit of the book and the moment with Simon's mom was such a lovely addition. Side note: I really enjoyed Leah on the Offbeat, but there's a part where Leah is really awful when someone comes out to her as "a little bit bi" and she gets mad at them because she says that they're either bi or not. Basically, they try to express some really vulnerable feelings to her, and Leah's angry that they're still figuring out their sexuality instead of being certain of it like her. Other than that, I thought it was great, but Leah is a very different character than Simon.
@carmen80774 жыл бұрын
I agree with everything you said! Also I was really disappointed to see that the actress that they chose for Leah was skinny, one of the things that I really loved about her was how relatable she was in the parts about body image.

I think a lot more straight/cis people are inclined to sympathize with Simon's friends and justify their actions. Not everyone (obviously), but I just think it's harder for them to relate to the true gravity of Simon's situation. I remember seeing this movie in theaters with a very large group of friends, all of whom are straight (I wasn't out at the time) and remember just SEETHING and crying on the inside when they were all like "wow that was really shitty of Simon." They like literally defended his friends and one person was surprised that they made up at the end. And I do get that maybe since this is a more lighthearted movie and Simon comes from a well-off, loving family, it may be a little difficult for some people to understand why he would be so scared. But there is another character in the movie that is actually harassed and publically ridiculed for being LGBTQ and -- in all honesty -- I think we all know that stories like these can quickly escalate into physical violence, death threats, sexual harassment, etc. So the fact that his friends weren't even in the least bit concerned with his mental/physical health and more upset about a tiny inconvenience in their own lives TRULY pissed me off, especially since the real world and real people expect this as a normal, justified response. Anyway, thanks for coming to my TED talk. I'm still bitter. I totally still love the movie and book, though.
