Little fact about her discovering the wings are gone: Angelina Jolie said the scene was one giant metaphor for when a woman is violated. The drugging, the pain, realizing what happened, it's all right there. P.S. I'm only wording it as such to get past the censors.

@@Isabella-tu9fb Someone else told me that and it hit so much harder. It makes a lot of sense too. She's drugged and Stephen takes something from her(in this case her wings) in the process mutilating her. Because of this, she becomes cold and cruel and lashes out at the world, wishing to cause as much pain as possible. The scene where she awakens and finds her wings gone now hurts so much more.

The best part about that early scene where Aurora was like two is that it's actually Angelina's daughter in real life! What makes Maleficent's curse so interesting, is that she herself added the caveat to break her own curse. That Aurora should be beloved by all who meet her. That included Maleficent herself. And as for why she and Stefan deride true love's kiss, was because Stefan used those very words ro maleficent when he kissed her on her 16th birthday. But he, like so many people, was consumed by greed and ambition and the quest for glory. He didn't truly love Maleficent, he loved riches and power far more than he loved her. When he lied to and tricked Maleficent, he taught her that love was nothing compared to greed and ambtion. He even lied to the dying king, knowing that Maleficent still lived, but he was determined to have that power. He already knew by that point that he didn't really love Maleficent, he loved power and glory, so he did not believe in true love's kiss either. Because he never really loved Maleficent. He didn't even love his queen or his own daughter. He only wanted power and riches. Phillip couldn't love Aurora because he barely knew her. Real love takes time to develop. But Maleficent loved Aurora. Aurora was different than the other humans. She loved Maleficent, the Moors, the fairies and magical creatures. She had no greed nor desire for power. She was as carefree as Maleifecnt herself was as a girl. My heart broke when Maleficent tried to recant her curse and failed. That is why she offered to let Aurora live in the Moors before she turned 16. She tried desperately to outwit her own curse. if Aurora was safe in the Moors, she couldn't fulfill the curse, and once the sun set on her 16th birthday, she'd be safe for good. It was the curse that led Aurora to the room full of spindles. The curse put one back together. And so it fulfilled it's purpose. I wept when Maleficent spoke her promise to Aurora. It destroyed her that she couldn't save the girl who became a daughter to her. And you could have knocked me over with a feather when Auroras eyes opened after Maleficent kissed her. Like a million other little girls, I thought only a man, a prince could give true love's kiss, because that is how all the stories went. It never occurred to me until that moment that Maleficent truly did love Aurora, and her kiss was one of true love. Sorry for the rant. I love this move and the message it carries.

The thing I like about the Maleficent films is they’re not a remake. They are intended to add to the story. I don’t have a real opinion on the films, but I just appreciate that they aren’t intended to replace the original film. Angelina is beautiful as this character. In general I think Maleficent is a neat character. She’s beautiful and menacing. But her (alleged) friend really sucks. To betray someone like that, who cared so deeply. To do something so cruel. I can’t blame her for being hurt and pissed.

@@JustMe-mp6vu I thought it was more of how both sides could be selfish and cruel with slightly justified intention within our own narrative. Stephan was supposed to kill her for the crown but decided to take the wings as proof. Technically the Moors were better off with this because without her, the Moors would have been overrun and ruined. And he stilled had cared for her since childhood. He let go of his pride to beg Maleficent to not curse his child and had not attacked the Moors as king by that point. Maleficent was hurt and betrayed but was selfish enough to transfer her pain unto an innocent Queen and a baby. Stephan just never got a redeeming moment. Being on the tower landing was his last chance to put the fight to bed.

When this movie first came out I was so shocked because all times before Disney has preached that true love comes from a partner but here for the first time, true love was motherly love and it is , indeed, the most powerful love in the world. Mothers would start wars. No person loves you like your mom. That was powerful. It just hit me that they replaced Philip...

It’s interesting, because the year before this came out they released “Frozen”, which did a similar thing where they make you THINK true love’s kiss is the key to thawing Anna’s frozen heart, and that it comes from a significant other, but in the end it comes from herself and the act of saving her sister Elsa, because that’s the act of true love she needed after all. They had a legit theme going on here during this time period with these movies and I am all for it lol

That's one of the things I loved about this movie. Maleficent thought the curse would be permanent cause she believed true love didn't exist due to Stefan's betrayal. 'Beloved by all' was very literal, and even Maleficent fell for it. Not only that, but true love's kiss came from a motherly love, which will always be more sincere than any romance. Motherly love is the strongest love.

Taking her wings is not only a violation of trust and not Only causes mental consequences. But the physical pain he was willing to put her through. Not only from cutting the wings off. She probably was using her wings way more than her legs. Suddenly needing to walk way more when your not used to it , your muskels aren’t used to it, sounds just brutal. Just imagine how her feet looked the first few weeks. Makes it even more sick than it already is.

Now while I can agree that Disney live action remakes are trash, the Maleficent movies are solid! Not the best, but growing up with “Sleeping Beauty” made me appreciate them more than an average person’s critical response. The storyline isn’t spectacular and ended up being a “Wicked” ripoff, but the casting for Maleficent and Aurora are just 👌🏼 Elle Fanning may not be mature looking like the animated film portrayed the character as, but Aurora’s only supposed to be 16. In “Sleeping Beauty” she looked more like in her 20s. One could argue that she’s been blessed by fairy magic and that’s why she looked mature for her age. Though you should definitely check out the sequel! It’s honestly a bit better than the first one! I was blown away by the grand visuals when I first watched it in theaters, months before the pandemic.

I will agree that while MOST of the remakes are indeed trash, as you say, Maleficent IS one of the better remakes. Along with Cruella and 101 Dalmatians and maybe Aladdin. I think Angelina Jolie was PERFECT casting for the Mistress of All Evil, but I did like the unique twist they put on her character arc. It made it more interesting than others that just vomited back the EXACT SAME DIALOGUE AND SCENES as in the animated counterparts. The animation was stunning and creative.

Yeah it's Wicked style. Its a retake on a story and meant to be its own thing, almost an alternate reality or "What if". I love the visuals in this movie. Angelina Jolie is gorgeous and striking. The wings, omg the wings. Let me say, I've always been a big fan of the "humans with giant bird wings" fantasy and love the idea of being able to fly so freely. To be honest, I don’t love Maleficent, but I like it fine. It’s not the most amazing movie I’ve seen, it has many flaws and plot holes (like fairies, who are Maleficent’s subjects, suddenly being on the side of her enemy or them hiding Aurora not somewhere far but right beside Maleficent’s kingdom, or Aurora’s parents even giving her to them without checking if they can take care of her), but it has its good points and creative ideas as well, (such as the concept of turning the story upside down, cutting wings practically being a metaphor for a rape, showing the difficulty and the costs of being wounded and vengeful), especially if you separate it from the original Sleeping beauty and just take it for its own story with its own characters. For me, though, the best part of the whole movie is Diaval and his relationship with Maleficent. The raven is the only character that got truly developed, not just changed) He goes along with the events of the movie while also having his own journey: he’s a raven that’s slowly becoming human. Learning to feel what people feel, raising a child with his Mistress and caring for them both… It’s just beautiful) Also, Sam Riley is awesome, bless those who cast him to play this role))) I hope you’ll react to Maleficent 2, it’s also pretty great)

Finally!!! So glad you watched one of my favorite remakes! 😆 Now you’ve got to watch the sequel too when you get the chance. Fun fact: Aurora as a 5-year kid was portrayed by Angelina Jolie’s daughter, as she was the only one not afraid of her mother in Maleficent costume. The other children would run away in fright. Also, Aurora was portrayed by Elle Fanning, younger sister of Dakota Fanning (who voiced Coraline). The dress Aurora wore during the mud fight scene could be used only once, so they shot that scene in one take. It was confirmed that the scene where Stefan cuts off Maleficent’s wings is a metaphor for rape. Also, out of curiosity… Have you ever watched some of French cartoons (like Code Lyoko for example)? I wouldn't have minded Maleficent becoming an antihero if it wasn't at everyone's expense: the fairies aren't as motherly, Phillip is less heroic, Stefan is a villain, Leah died, and Aurora isn't quite as weary as strangers (telling Maleficent to come out instead of attempting to flee like she did with Phillip). I think Maleficent still could've been a misunderstood villain if the king and queen legitimately forgot to invite her, only for her to curse Aurora due to used to being ostracized. Before slaying her, the fairies could've appealed to her while Phillip and Aurora (or perhaps her spirit brought to life by the fairies' magic) promise to invite her to future gathering and include her more, as do the fairies.

But then it’d just be another remake with the same plot and same lines and no one really wants that. They needed to create a new story interesting enough to be separate from the original so that people wouldn’t pick apart the scenes and criticize it for not being perfect. Things like “if they’re gonna make it the same story, they should just copy everything” and other stuff like this were said about other Disney remakes and the creators probably wanted to avoid this. (And I don’t think people will like a main character that curses people just because she wasn’t invited to a party)

I could totally see men writing the story as though phillip is the hero because men have done that exact thing over and over throughout history (p.s. the fairies were always bad at their job and prince phillip literally knew nothing about aurora. he was brave but why is his kiss true love, when a mother's kiss makes way more sense? also why would Mal want to be invited? the movie makes it very clear what happened to her was an allegory for assault. she isn't taking revenge for not being invited she's taking revenge for having her innocence stolen from her)

One of the things I loved the most about this story was actually one almost no one notices: the very subtle subplot of Stefan himself. Not just his betrayal of Maleficent, that's surface level; I mean the way he descends into madness because his mind literally can't handle what he did. How he's so far along in his madness that even when his WIFE takes ill and dies, he isn't there for her at all, because he's so obsessed with Maleficent. And that's because she never meant that much to him from the beginning, sadly; she was something he "won" when he betrayed his real love, and that fact always overshadowed the queen. She almost doesn't even show up at all in the movie, and that reflects directly off of how important she is to Stefan, compared to Maleficent. And then how even when his own daughter returns to him, he's distracted and angry -- not for her safety, but that she might ruin his chance to "beat" Maleficent. It's _still_ all about HIM and HIS past, which he can't let die. He's not mad about Maleficent in a good way anymore -- he's **driven** mad because of his connection to her, in all its horror. It's not just Maleficent who doesn't believe in true love anymore, after what happened between her and Stefan -- neither does he. And no matter what horrible things he does, just like her, he is just a broken person, who has done bad things, and can't forgive himself. Just like her, he's lashing out because he's in PAIN. And that's heartbreaking. His story is a tragedy. And then there's the way no one seems to appreciate how devastating and significant the little scene is when he remembers about the iron and decides to use it against her. Now, Stefan is not only constantly haunted by the horrific betrayal he committed against Maleficent... he's decided to _repeat it,_ in an even _worse_ way, and thus *bring the worst part of him back to life,* in all its horrifying glory. In the end, the only difference between these two "villains" is that Maleficent finds redemption through learning to love again... and Stefan is consumed by his bitterness. His whole story arc is just so psychologically intricate, and it doesn't get NEARLY enough credit or attention.

This is so funny! I was just listening to the Sleeping Beauty soundtrack and I suddenly see this reaction video in my notifications!😅 While I found Angelina’s performance as Maleficent to be great, I personally prefer the original, animated character. As for the film itself, it was…different. But it is still a pretty good one in my honest opinion.

I feel like I'm one of the few people who really enjoyed this movie, so it's nice to see you did too. The visuals, the metaphors, the magic... it's all just perfect. And even if the story itself has its flaws and some rather obvious plot holes, I think this is still one of the few remakes that I can actually appreciate. I don't know, maybe I'm just a little biased because Maleficient is my favourite villain. 💚

What’s funny about Maleficent’s name is that it means: "doing evil or harm". So her parents must’ve had a pretty sick sense of humour to have names their kid that. : P

Something I liked about about Diaval is his transformations. When Maleficent turns him into a different form, he still has a little bird in him. Like the horse and wolf forms still had a beak instead of a snout/muzzle. The dragon had scales that looked more feather-like, and so on. He is definitely my favorite character for both movies.

To be fair about the throne part, Maleficent used to sleep in the tree from the beginning. But she's lost her wings, and now must use a staff to hold her balance walking. Continuing to sleep in the tree is no longer feasable, so she needed to set her sights closer to the ground to sleep.

Maleficent is one of my favorite movies thanks for reacting to it. You must have been incredibly sheltered as this reaction was kind of hard to watch. Let me preface this by saying, I've seen 3 movie adaptations and none stageplay version of Stephen King's Carrie. When Maleficent is stalking through the stone pathway markers after he wings were stolen away, and Stephen becomes king, the way the barriers fly off from her footsteps reminds me of something eerily similar in at least one adaptation of Carrie.

I read on the Disney wiki that apparently, the reason why baby Aurora was crying in that one scene at the cottage is because she needed milk, and obviously Maleficent couldn't feed her, so Diaval brought her milk from a flower (also I think to pacify her). Aurora: "Oh, it's just so beautiful!" Maleficent (in her head): "Alright, that's enough! Time for bed!" My question is: how did Maleficent get Aurora all cleaned up when she put her to bed the second time after that mud fight?

This movie is surprisingly good. Maleficent is all at once fearsome and heartwarming, and the worlds are visually stunning. The original Sleeping Beauty was fine, but it was a fairy tale. The characters were figures to carry out actions that needed to happen. This movie gave the characters actual character, and Maleficent herself was a sympathetic character, her arc of learning to love again was beautifully crafted, if maybe a little predictable, but at the same time she felt none the less like the Mistress of Evil, not disappointing at all. Favorite characters: Maleficent (obviously), Diaval, and also those big tree guard guys were really cool. I will say nothing of the sequel regarding plot, but only that I don't regret watching it.

My interpretation of the scene when Maleficent looks at baby Aurora outside the window (what Aurora was thinking): Maleficent: "It's so ugly one could almost feel sorry for it." Aurora: "I don't know what you just said, but at least you're paying attention to me" (smiles) Maleficent: "I hate you, Beastie." Aurora: "I'm so happy you're paying attention to me."
