The joy on your face is how I imagine I'll look when I come up for Ocar Watch next month. Orcas are my All time favourite I have loved them ever since free willy came out in the early 90's. I have never seen them before so fingers crossed next month will be my time. Thanks for sharing this little video. All the best Josh

I love every single moment that I spend out in nature, whether I get images from it or not each experience is always so wonderful! I hope I get to see and photograph orcas at least once in my life, and I'm so thrilled that you managed to see them!

So excited for you Kim. They are one of my favorites of all. I still remember the excitement I felt when on a Whale Watching Tour in Victoria, BC and they orcas were chasing the salmon under our boat. Was amazing. So glad you were able to see and experience them.

About 10 years ago I was salmon fishing off the south coast of Vancouver Island and we were surrounded by a pod only about 10 meters from the boat. There was a pod of around 15. What an amazing experience.

Hi Kim, You were like a kid in a sweet shop and I'm not surprised. At last another experience ticked off your bucket list. It was a shame that they were so far out to photograph properly, but there is always another time.

Great video and glad your dream came true. I seen them 4/5 times on visits to Vancouver Island…amazing. One time we were on a small boat out of Campbell River watch a pod of 5 not far away when 2 big bulls surfaced next to the boat and swan under. They’re the size of a tank!

So awesome you got to see the Orcas. I am very envious. It doesn't matter if you didn't get an epic photo of them, just seeing them and knowing they are there living wild in the ocean is the best part. That sunset was a nice bonus too.

Love your reaction to the whales Kim, I'm lucky to live on Vancouver Island and see orcas and other whales on a regular basis, bucket list or not I still get the same reaction as you. Keep your videos coming.

You lucky, lucky girl - on two counts. One - for seeing and photographing Orcas - magnificent creatures and 2) for getting the Z100-400 lens. I have had one on order since the beginning of November but there is such a long, long queue waiting to get them and no hint on the horizon as to when mine might appear!!!

Orcas are an amazing animal. I still don't have a picture of one since I keep missing them when they are reported near me. I live in the Puget Sound area of Washington State, USA so Orcas and gray wheels are around. The closest I have ever gotten to them was in the 1970's fishing in the Straits of Jaun de Luca. We were in a 19' (5.7m) boat and 3 Orcas came up to us and started jumping around and swimming under our boat. It was exciting and scary at the same time. Of course none of us had a camera with us back then. It is however a memory I expect I will always have.

Great video. I missed out on a sighting at Boddam last weekend. I saw my first ones at Fraserburgh this afternoon. I also don't have the greatest photos or video but was a joy just to see them. They were a bit far out and the 150-600 still came up a bit short. Persistance pays off though and I'll be trying again.

Kim, What a delightful experience! Can you use a multiplier on your new lens?
@frankinblackpool2 жыл бұрын
The joy shown on your face is priceless. I know you've got a Scottish accent, but Subtitles? 😂🤣😂 Made me chuckle. Enjoy your new lens. I also have a 100-400mm lens however it is for a Micro Four Thirds camera which gives me a Full Frame equivalent of 200-800mm focal length. I doubt that even my lens would have made any difference capturing your orcas. However you were there and could actually see them with your Mark One eyeball which is a priceless memory. Rather than leaving your 400mm lens on a shelf thinking its for wildlife only, I suggest that you try and use it as much as you can. It may surprise you with different landscape opportunities and the ability to compress the gap between the foreground and background.
@kimgrantphotography2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Frank! Haha - I put the subtitles on certain parts as my audio wasn't very clear when driving and looking through the scope. I intend to use it a lot. I captured some sea shots with it the other day and tried some zoomed in landscape shots today too. Was great!
@frankinblackpool2 жыл бұрын
@@kimgrantphotography You may be surprised with filming with your Bazooka lens as well. They are great for compressing the background. I know KZbin does not like links but I have two examples of the same location shot on different days with a 35mm lens (FF 70mm) and 400mm lens (FF 800mm) Keep an eye on the landscape especially Blackpool Tower for the first 10 seconds of my Turnstone episode. This bit was shot with a 35mm lens. And then look at my Rider on the Storm at time stamps 1:40 to 1:48. Notice how much bigger and closer the tower is from the same position but with a 400mm lens. Please don't look too closely as I was experimenting with Hybrid Gamma Log colour profile and KZbin made a pigs ear of the compression rate with painfully too much blocky artefact. KZbin does not like very complex scenes such as storm waves. 😥 Please do not be offended and think I am trying to mansplain, I was hoping that you would appreciate real world examples of two different focal lengths shot from the same position to give a feel for how much compression a zoom lens can achieve when filming.

Thought I'd share my Bucket list achievements. I've climbed Europe's highest mountain without a guide because I could not afford one, done the hardest UK mountain traverse on the Isle of Skye, jumped out of a few planes and flown over Egypt's Valley of the Kings in a balloon at sunrise. I was going to climb the Eiger until I stood at the base of it and pooed my pants looking up. In my defence I did the two mountains on either side of it and they are considerably higher. I got psyched out by the near mythical reputation of the Eiger. That and very limited safe exit routes should things go wrong.
