Especially during the kiss scene between Patrick and Charlie(in the book, Patrick kisses him multiple times). The book goes into detail that Charlie doesn't really know how to respond. The truth about Aunt Helen is even more messed up in the book, cause he frequently calls her his favorite aunt, has you 100% convinced that she was one of his personal champions, and her death was just another thing he blamed himself for. And then we find out the truth. He wasn't just keeping it from everyone else. He was keeping it from himself.

i feel like it's foreshadowed as early as the first letter -- he says he was "going with" aunt helen, right when he talks about two people "going with" each other as in "dating." it's something that he knows and understands but can't see the wrongness of, and it creates a sense of tension in the reader while u just WAIT for him to finally tell u everything.

One of his reasons for his Aunt being his favorite person is because Charlie's Birthday was close to Christmas and his Aunt was the only one who cared enough to get him presents for his Birthday and Christmas. Everyone else only gave Charlie gifts for Christmas, it explains it more in the book

The author of the book has made slight references to the story being slightly autobiographical...and wrote an update letter in the 20th anniversary version. Yeah kind of saw that coming. Lol, Charlie doesn't have a lot of experience with girls, so I don't think he knew that he was supposed to kiss the girl he is "dating" regardless of how he actually feels. Seriously is Mary Elizabeth sooo self-involved that she can't even see that Charlie has no interest in her? That whole relationship was just painful to watch.
@pineappledragon2113
@pineappledragon2113 2 жыл бұрын
@@irenemichelleanne that relationship is the one thing I disliked about the movie compared to the book. In the book the relationship isn’t as one sided. Charlie does care about Mary but he also sees why she acts so self involved. When they break up and apologizes she says she knows that he’s serious but still doesn’t forgive him. In the movie she just acts like an ass after the breakup.

When it comes to this movie I found it to be ahead of its time and for my abnormal psych class in college last semester I wrote a paper about some of Charlie's mental health conditions but focused mainly on ONE. One thing people do not realize is that the trauma Charlie experienced from his childhood by his aunt Helen who was mol3sting him is that from this occured his series of blackouts as you see throughout the movie. Charlie suffers gravely from not just depression but also PTSD which is why in some parts of the movie he would wake up from a blackout and be confused as to what happened prior. Based on the criteria of the DSM5 for PTSD, for one to be diagnosed with it they must display stressors, intrusion symptoms, avoidance, negative alterations in cognitions and mood, alterations in arousal and reactivity, duration, functional significance, and exclusion which is based on non-medical, drug, or alcohol related symptoms. The stressor Charlie experienced was the direct exposure of being seGGsually abused by his aunt Helen. The intrusion symptoms are based on flashbacks and traumatic reminders that stem from both emotional distress and physical reactivity. For example when Charlie's sister was hit by her BF it caused him to have a flashback to a vulnerable moment with his aunt. His initial reaction after seeing Candace hit was to fight her boyfriend but she stopped him. As for physical reactivity, towards the end of the movie when Charlie and Sam kissed, he had another flashback. They got very heavy in the moment and Charlie had to take a few steps back because of how fast the flashbacks came. This was a reaction to being touched by Sam the same way his aunt touched him as a child. I could go on about how much I had to analyze this movie as a Psych major but just know this movie can have one endless conversation and there is so much more stuff from that. I do wanna say though I do appreciate the story in itself portraying a MALE victim in this type of situation cus it shows how men can also be victims and experience such an unfortunate event from the early onset molestation and the VARIOUS mental health struggles! What made it worse tho was that Charlie never told anyone about his AUNT HELEN so he really was a ticking time bomb if you think about it but thankfully he met Sam and Patrick and they really did SAVE him which this movie also shows the importance of how there are people who those of us grasp onto for not just social reasons but for a reason to LIVE as well.

I would like to say, I don't think Charlie chose to not tell anyone what happened with his aunt. I think he buried those thoughts so far until they started getting triggered to come out by new circumstances he was in. I know that happened for me. I didn't remember what happened for me for the longest time until someone I knew got SAed and I had all the memories start flooding back.
@fangirlalliecat
@fangirlalliecat Жыл бұрын
@@Rin-jy9gg if I remember the book correctly (it’s been years since I’ve read it), that exactly how it happened. His mind blocked out the abuse, so he only remembered the good things about Helen and the fact that she would get him presents and the special attention she would pay him when he otherwise felt invisible. His memories of the abuse resurfacing in the midst of his depressive spiral it what caused him to break. I don’t remember if the scene where he calls his sister happened in the book, but strictly speaking about the movie, I appreciate that she was immediately able to know that something was off and was a quick on her feet to immediately send help. 😢

Fellow Pittsburgh person here. This was set in the early 90s, and as someone about the same age as the Charlie character, the nostalgia level is through the roof on this one. We had a new department head at Point Park in the late 90s who shared this movie's obsession with the view coming out of the Fort Pitt Tunnel. It was Kings, Eat 'n Park, or Denny's for every high schooler. The theater where they do the Rocky Horror nights is in Dormont and both they and the legendary Oakland coffee shop/movie theater The Beehive held those events back in the day. But the most shocking and specific Pittsburgh reference to me was about the Fruit Loop in Schenley Park which was (and may still be, I really don't know) the most notorious gay cruising spot in town. But in general, so many of the characters and issues that they are dealing with seem pulled right out of the lives of people I knew then that it is almost trippy. Beautiful ode to a coming of age in that specific time and place. I always want to call out the lighting in particular as being EXACTLY what the 90s looked like. Great reaction guys!

love this reaction. I suffer from borderline personality disorder, too, and this movie has one of the most realistic depictions of BPD. if you watch it again, or better yet, read the book, you'll see it wasn't out of nowhere. his reactions are highly emotionally dysregulated and triggered. every time he confronted violence of any kind he reacted as if he also was being acutely affected. that's one of the fundamentals of BPD: imbibing and internalizing other people's trauma. losing memory is a symptom of PTSD and it's a hallmark of BPD to have memory gaps and vivid flashbacks. especially in situations that lack safety and security and/or in situations of acute violence. it's almost scary to experience life cz you never know what will affect you adversely and categorically. i have to watch what I listen to, read or watch with such discipline. the alternative is giving myself PTSD without even experiencing the trauma irl... by just imagining it.

God I have such a love for this film and the movie. I have read the book about 3 times in my life and also read it at important times in my life. The movie is also one of the most faithful adaptions of a book to movie adaptions. I’m so glad you guys actually reacted to this and I’m glad I found the channel months ago during the Euphoria reaction days! (The book is also 10x more heartbreaking and even more so upon re reading it)

If only Ezra had learned something from the characters in this movie. If Ezra had gotten professional help to deal with all the bad thoughts and negative emotions they probably wouldn't in the situation they are now. Could have been the next Matt Damon (good will hunting)

i adore this movie. I watched it for the first time when i was 15 or 16 and connected to it immedietly and it helped me feel understood. It also lead to me eventually realizing i had my own trauma. Traumatic memories are stored in the brain differently than normal memories. Imagine a short film with 10 scenes as a representation of a memory: a normal memory would have scenes 1-10 in the proper order but a traumatic memory has the 10 scenes out of order (for example: 8, 4, 7, 1, 6, 5, 10, 9, 2, 3). With Trauma Therapy, your therapist helps you to put these "scenes" back in order, process them, and move forward from them. It's also very very very common to feel attached to your abuser. For many people, abuse is one on one. Meaning that its often you and the abuser, often alone, tho this is obviously not always the case. But because its one on one, its very easy for the abused to manipulate you with rewards. "Come sit on my lap, we can play a computer game". As a child it's natural to trust the adult. Why wouldnt you sit on their lap to play a fun game together? You sit on your parents lap, extended family or family friends laps. Adults are supposed to take care of you. "Dont tell your friends we played computer games or we'll have to do school work next time instead." As a child, you can rationalize anything. Maybe the best example of children doing this is Santa Clause. How does he get around? Why does he give us toys? How does he know where we live? Why are there dozens of them on the streets and in malls? Kids often find their own answers for these things or easily accept the ones their given without much thought because its given to them by an adult. SO when a child it told "not to tell-" its easy to find an answer. In my case, i figured we were supposed to be doing school work but instead i was allowed to play a fun game. So *obviously* i shouldnt tell anyone, because if i did, we'd get in trouble and have to study next time. Does that make sense? Anyways, the truly traumatic part is often blocked. Our brain goes into autopilot and files that trauma away because we cant handle it. Traumatic memories are as much physically affecting as they are mental and emotional. We carry the stress in our body and it makes our muscles ache and our body reacts instinctually to protect ourselves form anything that could cause us harm. We have lapses in memory, anxiety, shortness of breath, dizzy spells, dissociation, flashbacks, loss of focus, nightmares etc etc It manifests in many different ways. In Charlies case, he was experiencing flashbacks and when those got worse, he would begin to dissociate (which is a different experience for everyone but can be experienced as blacking out). This, naturally, leads to confusion and anxiety and even depression.

My favorite movie ever ❤️ GUYS... Did you know , the director is also the writer of the book - stephen chbosky and Emma watson interviewed him a few years ago, for his new book - but he talked Perks too, and he has made a new ending. Charlie writes a last letter - i think supposedly a decade later, and it confirmed him and sam being together (if i don't remember wrong) .... so if you buy the book now, it has this new chapter in it. that's so cool.

I really love this movie and book. The first time I tried to watch it was with my mom when it first came out in 2012. I was 12 years old so as soon as my mom started to realize the Aunt Helen story she actually turned off the tv and stopped the movie. I think it sucks there was no trigger warning for her to know that was gonna happen because she could've decided if I should or should not watch the movie. Or know to have a discussion with me about it. Because instead she was caught a bit off guard. At 12, my sister (a year younger than me) and I didn't even realize what Aunt Helen did to Charlie because it was subtle. A way that adults and those aware of sexual assault will pick up on, but a kid who only knows the basics of sex with puberty wouldn't. Then at like 14, I read the book and watched the movie again after understanding the story fully. I think it was my first real experience of child molestation. I think overall it's such a strong story with Patrick's storyline about being gay and having a lover who wants/needs to stay in the closet, Charlie's friend committing suicide and charlie's aunt molesting him causing so much trauma and PTSD that he doesn't even realize fully what Aunt Helen did until he starts trying to have sexual experiences, now consenting, but bringing up memories and pictures of his past. It's a heavy book and movie but was very educational for me and powerful. Now that I'm 22 I understand why my mom did what she did the first time we tried to watch it. She wanted to shield me from child SA and protect my innocence a little longer. However, I think that far into the movie it probably would have been better to just have a discussion about sex and consent because now I think it's important for kids to know that there are places nobody should touch them without their consent. Not everyone blacks out the trauma like Charlie did, but some kids still stay quiet about it because the trusted adults tell them "it's their little secret," and they don't realize it's wrong. I think it's a hard line to figure out as a parent. When bringing up the possibility of sexual harassment and assault because you want to protect a kid's innocence but you also want to try to prevent these events if the kid can speak up and tell the adult "no you can't touch me" there or at least confide in their parents if it happens. It's definitely an answer I don't have for myself when thinking of being a mom someday.

i love this movie and book so much. it was executed so beautifully in the film and the cast was absolutely perfect. the way they demonstrate mental illness, sexual abuse, etc. really gets the point across without being super graphic and really hits you in the feels and gives you an understanding of the place charlie was in at the time. if anyone hasnt read the book you really should because its just as good if not better than the film.

Sup guys love the movie reactions can you please react to The Crow (1994) starring Brandon Lee son of Bruce Lee. This was the last film Brandon Lee got to film because he died on the set of this movie he got shot in the back with a blank bullet but some pieces of other blanks were still in the chamber/barrel of gun the prop members done a shitty job not double checking/cleaning the prop guns. It was an accident gone wrong Brandon Lee was only 28 years old. Their are other squeals to this movie but don’t watch them. Before Brandon Lee tragically passed he was supposed to sign a deal to make two more Crow movies after he finished the first movie and got married to Fiancé Eliza Hutton but never happed. One other thing when you guys show the reaction can boost the audio.
