i'm dying over the "is this the real anne frank house?" "no that wasn't in amsterdam" it is actually!! a lot of people think that she lived in germany but her family hid out in amsterdam! i went to the anne frank house when i was in holland and it's very cool! i'm not sure if they filmed in the actual house or not but the real life anne frank house is in fact in amsterdam :)

This was not the real Anne Frank house. They tried to get permission to film in the real one, but was denied. There can be no cameras or videos inside the house. And the restaurant they went is a real place but could not film there either due to the small size of the restaurant. So both places were fully developed sets.

There's a huge thing that's not touched on from the book: Augustus had a girlfriend before Hazel that passed away from a brain tumor. And supposedly the tumor changed her entire personality, to where she had no verbal filter. That's why Augustus does the same throughout the whole movie. Also apparently Augustus was staring at Hazel in the meeting because she and Hazel looked similar in their "cancer states" (book quote).

My tears wouldn’t let me see the words on the page. It broke me. Then the movie came out & captured the book completely. The heart of it, the pain of it… all right there. OMG IM SO EXCITED! My mom and sister read the book and they both cried the the upstairs hallway for over an hour, I knew what happens and I agreed to go to a special showing of the movie as emotional support for them. We got a bracelet and poster each, i was read to have my mom and sister crying on me, I thought it wouldn’t effect me at all, but I turned into a complete mess and my mom and sister had to comfort me and then everyone in the theater was comforting everyone. There were lots of couples and one behind us was losing it, the guy was sobbing and that made his girlfriend cry even more and I remember her say “you said you wouldn’t cry” I could barely understand her then I heard him tell her that there was a shit load of snot coming out of her nose. Everyone had to take a couple minutes when it was over to calm down but it was one of the most unique experiences I’ve ever had and the movie has a special place in my heart because of it.

It's doubly poignant that Hazel and Gus kiss in the attic where Anne Frank and Peter Van Piels also fell in love. A mirroring of two sets of teenagers, born in different times, both couples under the heavy threat of impending death before they reach adulthood, but finding solace and connection in one another, amidst sadness and difficulties no one should experience.

It's the twist that always gets you because from the very beginning, we think it's Hazel that's going to die but then we find out that Augustus is sick again and he's the one that ends up dying. I love this movie so much, can't tell you how many times I have rewatched it. Between Hazel's eulogy for Augustus and Augustus' eulogy for Hazel I'm not sure how long I was crying for. Paper towns is a top tier book and a bottom tier movie. Just absolute garbage. Not the fault of the actors. Absolutely just a terrible written adaptation. The plot changes destroyed the original message and the movie did not properly convey how much of an unreliable narrator Q was/how damaging it was to both him and Margo for him to view her as more than just a person. Instead of being a critique/deconstructing the way ppl create manic pixie dream girls (as the book did so well), the movie just -has a manic pixie dream girl as the love interest. And therefore is just another shitty movie with a manic pixie dream girl love interest

Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort also played siblings in the Divergent series that came out around the same time. I loved that series, especially the first two movies, Divergent and Insurgent. The last book was cut in two movies and part one, Allegiant, was released in 2016. It received generally negative reviews from critics and was a box-office bomb. It is the lowest-grossing film in the series. The last movie was to be called Ascendant and to be released in 2017. Due to budget cuts, a theatrical release for Ascendant was dropped in favor of making a television film for Starz that would be followed by a spinoff series. But both projects have canceled, effectively ending the franchise. Plus, Shailene and Laura Dern star in Big Little Lies, with Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Alexander Skarsgård and Zoë Kravitz (also in Divergent). Meryl Streep also plays a big part in season two.

Hazel's mom always makes me cry LOL, the parent stuff sucks SO bad. But yeah I agree that probably the saddest thing about this movie is when Gus isn't himself anymore, starting from the phone call at the gas station. The realities of cancer suck so bad, and it's very hard to watch, but it's incredibly important and a very beautiful story. If a man don't make me feel like how Augustus Waters makes Hazel feel, I don't want him😤😤

I've been a huge fan of John Green for over a decade, especially because he lives in my city and a lot of the places in the books are real places I see every day. I now work in the children's hospital that was the inspiration for the one in the book. It's unfortunate that his brother was just diagnosed with Hodgkins lymphoma a few weeks ago. In school I was a therapist who led a group partial hospitalizing program, and I used this book a lot in my curriculum on living with chronic health conditions. The one that really stuck with patients was, "that's the thing about pain, it demands to be felt." This book and author will forever hold a special place in my heart, and I'm glad you all watched it

Oh, I remember watching this at the cinema and I could not, for the life of me, stop crying at the end. It has got to be one of my favorite movies, they did the book justice! Also, side note; this was filmed at the actual Anne Frank House in Amsterdam! Anne Frank and her family moved to the Netherlands in 1933. They hid in the annex of the building her fathers company was located from July '42 until August '44. It has been a museum since the '60s, which Otto Frank (Anne's father and only surviving member of the Frank family) oversaw.

Re: the infamous cigarette metaphor cringed moment- Something people don’t realize about Augustus’s character that John green has talked about is that he is very performative with his words and behavior. He often uses big words (incorrectly) to try and make himself sound smarter even though it comes off making him look silly etc. The cigarettes thing is an especially clear example of his desperate desire to feel like he’s in control. In the book (***spoiler****) it’s also learned that bot only did he lose a leg to cancer but before hazel he also lost a love of his to cancer (a girlfriend). This kid is desperate to feel in control of his life. Which he is not. As is the theme of the novel. The fault in our “stars” -stars is “destiny/fate” which is what’s explored in a lot of the text and subtext. I found this quote from John green when answering a tumblr question about Augustus: “Anonymous asked: I feel like the only person in the universe that doesn't understand the cigarette metaphor. Can you explain it? And perhaps the implications of having a character so concerned with metaphor and grand Romantic images over the reality of their lives? John’s Answer: Right, so there are a lot of ways to answer this question, I think. The very straightforward way: If you think of symbols as “enchanted objects,” Augustus associates the unlit cigarette with taking control over his health, which often feels (and is!) out of his control. So he puts the killing thing in his mouth but denies it the power to kill him. The less straightforward way: Augustus is a very performed character, right? He delivers monologues, for God’s sake. He’s one of those kids who is super self-conscious and always assumes that people are watching him and/or listening very closely to him. So this is one of the ways that we see him performing the role of Augustus Waters instead of just being authentically himself. (This changes over the course of the novel; even though he clings to the IDEA of the cigarettes to the very end, it’s worth remembering that he never actually GETS them in that scene at the Speedway.) 3. There are even less straightforward, metafictional ways to read Gus’s obsession with symbol and metaphor (like, he’s a character in a novel that’s about how fiction is important and ‘real’ even though it is made up and not real, etc.), but I find that stuff a bit much, personally.”

Bryce, the scene where she’s sobbing is where I break down too. It’s the gut-wrenching sounds she makes for me.

Augustus waters was the first guy in a novel I fell for. He just felt so charming and perfect but still somehow real.

something to know... bollywood (india's film industry) made their take on TFIOS and the actor who played the role of augustus waters in that one, unfortunately, passed away by suspected suicide. Dil Bechara (indian version of TFIOS) was his last movie.
