Honestly, what makes the villains of Zombie island so good is that they genuinely *were* victims. However, their need to extend their own lives by consuming rhe life force of others, innocent or not, removes any sympathy from them but its just enough to where its not so cut and dry

yes, its very much a "Jumping off the slippery slope". the pirates and the confederates ere genuine evils of their times but the cat people didn't care. they only saw invaders to their property and jsut decided to murder everyone they saw indescriminiately. Zombie Island is such a big deal when it comes to the Scooby Doo franchise because it was their first movie (not including the TV films that were lower budget) AND at the time, it was a big twist that the monsters were finally real this time around. It also fit the tone of being dark with the monsters being real too. This is also a great example of a series breaking from their previous image in a way that only enhanced it. This movie along with the following ones (Witch's Ghost, Alien Invaders and Cyber Chase) completely revitalized interest in the series.
@robbiewalker2831 Жыл бұрын
You’re right about how monsters are real AND the story being dark at the same time. The first incarnation of Scooby-Doo had this sense of a foreboding atmosphere, which was lacking with later incarnations at the time. There were real monsters during the Scrappy-Doo Era, but it resulted in getting rid of Fred and Velma, who were the only two serious characters that would’ve kept the franchise alive. Scrappy was intended to change the Scooby Formula, but it resulted in Scrappy taking away Fred and Velma’s Roles. Heck, in one episode of the “New Scooby-Doo Mysteries”, Scrappy almost got Fred arrested; it was no wonder Fred was angry with Scrappy in the live-action movie, or in that “Mystery Incorporated” Museum scene; Fred hated Scrappy for conspiring. Point is: this is the first “NON-Scrappy” based piece of Scooby Media where Monsters are real, and the first piece of Scooby Media, since the original show, where there’s a sense of danger and a dark atmosphere.

Daphne being excited over real ghosts while everyone is skeptical is funny to me since she probably hasn’t seen a real ghost since the (back then incomplete) 13 Ghosts story arc. Sadly, Skycycle, the band who performed "Terror Time", got screwed over by the industry not long after this movie. Highly recommend listening to their stuff. Also, if we're going to continue this Scooby-Doo stuff, I have to suggest "The Scooby-Doo Project". It's an award-winning official Scooby-Doo Blair Witch parody that was made for Cartoon Network.
@mihaiteodor776310 ай бұрын
How were they screwed?
@camerondodge207010 ай бұрын
@@mihaiteodor7763 In January of '99 they were pressured by their label to rerecord some of the songs. They did, and it was supposed to be released in August of that year. MCA (their label) then postponed the release several times. Skycycle, due to the many delays, decided to release some of the songs on their website for free. This was still a novel concept at the time. Now, although the release and distribution of MP3s wasn't a part of their contract, the band were told "that the presence of MP3s on our site was 'upsetting' MCA executives [and] that this order came from the highest regions of the corporate structure at MCA and Universal, which believed that any support for the MP3 format was unacceptable." (That being a quote from a later unconnected, but still somewhat related, court case.) The band complied and took down the MP3s, but were still dropped from their label. The album was never officially put out on CD, though MCA has put it out on streaming (because of course they have). Band leader Steve Isaacs would later testify in the big Napster trial (officially A&M v Napster, though there were 18 companies involved in the lawsuit), using Skycycle to show "what we, and hundreds of other bands, have been through with the antiquated business model of the major label", and argued that allowing people to hear their music through things like Napster (or, you know, releasing them on their website) could generate interest in the band. Eventually, due to the restrictions in their contract, Skycycle decided to give the album away as a free download (this to ensure MCA didn't make any money off it, as they could still demand payment for the expenses of recording). The band continued on for about a year, writing some stuff, having one song included on a compilation, but never getting close to what they had. They broke up in 2000, with one reunion show in 2002. And again, MCA would later release the album on streaming services, making this whole thing bitterly funny to look at now.

This movie is the first thing Scooby-Doo related that WB produced after they bought Hanna-Barbera, after the slow and painful years that the franchise went through, after almost dying a few times, this is the first ever reboot/new continuity that offered new interest to the OG audience and to a new one, this was a banger! This movie is not an old VHS that stayed at your grandma's home, if you find this VHS you put it on a velvet cushion under a cristal dome, it's a gem, all the following show and direct to video wouldn't exist without it. Unfortunately it also inspired the live-action movies which I hate a lot but people like it I guess ^^

This wasn’t a new continuity and actually still involved Hanna Barbera as they weren’t fully absorbed until 2001. This movie continues the original Hanna Barbera continuity making the characters now full adults with jobs. Warner bros didn’t fully reboot the series until after Cyber Chase, which as part of a tribute to William Hanna who had passed away at the time, canonised all the scooby doo media at that point into a single Hannah Barbera continuity. This is still in my opinion the BEST Scooby-Doo film to date (with the first live-action movie being my 2nd favorite). You won't likely change my mind. Despite going direct-to-video, it was the first Scooby-related media I watched that felt like it could have worked as a theatrical experience (at least for a limited release) and I would have loved to see it on the big screen. The more advanced animation immediately made me think "Wow, this is another level from the original cartoon" and Third Eye Blind's cover of the main theme has become one of my all-time favorite renditions (again, along with the live-action films' version by MxPx). I loved the story's darker tone, and the monsters being real this time legitimately scared me as a kid. I remember getting chills the first time I saw Fred trying to pull a mask off that zombie and the whole head came off instead. Even for a kid's movie, that was surprisingly mature (and also my earliest memory of seeing a human head detach). Granted, I was very young at the time but it was nightmare fuel when the body picked the head up and twisted it back on. That twist instantly upped the stakes for me. "It's Terror Time Again" by Skycycle was definitely the highlight of the film for me, one of the best Scooby chase songs EVER. I re-watched my VHS tape SOOO many times just for that song, including the end-credits. It's still on my Halloween party playlist along with "Hex Girl" and "Earth, Wind, Fire and Air" from The Witch's Ghost. Yeah, Jennifer Hale, Jane Wiedlin, and Kimberly Brooks' voices coming out of that animated band definitely awakened my attraction to Goths. The werecats were even creepier. Jacques' transformation hit me like a jump-scare, freaking me out much more than Lena & Simone's, because I didn't expect him to be a villain and he changed into cat form so much faster. I was never suspicious of Beau. After getting used to red herrings from older Scooby cartoons and the character of the same name from A Pup Named Scooby-Doo, him being evil just seemed too obvious. My biggest shock was the zombies being "the good guys", though I hadn't learned about the Civil War yet back then (Them being victims was still a cool reveal). I could go on, there are SO many things I love in this film. But overall, I'd give it an 8-9/10, not perfect but high quality.

Zombie Island is a Collaboration between Hanna-Barbera and Mook Animation, a Japanese Studio... 🌚🌝 Scooby Doo is Anime. Scooby Doo has been Anime since 1998.

I like that the zombies and ghosts are all wildly different people who have all come together for a common goal; to stop more people from becoming victims. This movie came out when I was 7 and played for several years on Cartoon Network's segment Cartoon Theater and as a kid I never thought anything like "wow, that confederate soldier was so heroic and good!" I simply recognized that all the different dead people were trying to do what was right in that specific situation, from wayward tourists to mobsters to literal murderous pirates and confederate soldiers, regardless of the crimes they had done in life.

The one thing that never sat right with me about this movie is portraying Morgan Moonscar as a good guy. This man and his crew slaughtered innocent settlers for no reason then drove the rest into the bayou to be devoured by gators and HE is the good guy? I hate to say but he got what he deserved. Maybe he also realized he got his comeuppance in death and tries to help others to repent of sorts but it’s not really expanded upon so it just the murdering pirate ghost is a good guy tryna warn us about the soul sucking cat people and how would they know because Lena and Simone didn’t drain their life forces they just slaughtered them….

This was such a good and just generally a fan favorite mivie. So it's such a shock they reconed it and changed the real monsters to fake ones and also made that awful Zombi Island 2 movie. Literally every fan thinks it was a stupid change but they are still behind it, i just don't get it

Ok so funny story, when I was a kid this movie terrified me. I’ve rewatched it now and it’s really enjoyable. Unfortunately I get the same nightmare every time after.
