the fanbase was still young kids at the time, the mature R&B sound alienated most of the fanbase (this is why the third album flopped compared to the previous two). it would have been a bigger hit if it was released 2004 2005. The more mature R&B album didn't interest any of my friends and i until we were in our later teens. it failed to gain them new fans. while alienating the original fans. and on top of that there was hardly any promotion as some of the girls were over the band before the album was finished. Mel C mentioned this many times (she said she wasn't gonna be there for the full writing & recording of the album). Mel B also wanted to focus on solo stuff, the only 2 that wanted to keep going was Emma and Victoria. Geri had left in 1998.

The Viva Forever video always got to me as a teenager and still does. It's talking about loss - loss of childhood, loss of friendship - grief. It's a beautiful song which doesn't get enough recognition. 👍🏻

Give _Spice World_ the movie a shot, it's genuinely hilarious. I unapologetically dig those early singles - a moment in time, captured.

Emma’s high, sweet voice and Melanie B’s deeper, warm voice was such an underrated and underused pairing. They sang the chorus on “Viva Forever”, and they really made that song. Emma’s voice was the most used on that song, IIRC. They even layered her vocals with some of Mel C’s parts, which I didn’t know until someone isolated their vocals on here.

You started with “Holler”, a point in time where they had lost their identity, an important member of the group had left, and were trying to fit in the Y2K american aesthetics and a market at the time dominated by TLC and Destiny’s Child; and you ended with one of their biggest anthems “Who Do You Think You Are”, the girls in all of their glory dominating the 90’s world with unique personalities and style.

It seems kind of easy to underestimate the Spice Girls but oh, dont forget they became a phenomenon cuz of THE MUSIC! Not just on their brilliant debut album but just about all of their catalog really is first-rate pop music. Yes, they all have nicknames and individual personalities but as a group THEY ROCKED!! Without THE SONGS they'd be nothing....

Oh, Viva Forever. It is such a beautiful sad song. I was obsessed with it back then. There are more layers to the song in the full version. There is also a remixed version that is really good too and makes more emphasis on Mel B's low singing part.

Viva Forever was the last single to feature Geri (Ginger Spice), before she unexpectingly left the group. The music video took 5 months to shoot, and was already in production before she left. It's hard to spot, but apparently the fairy version of Geri doesn't fly out of the vending machine at the end, signalling the "loss" of someone, which of course happened to be a coincidence when Geri actually did leave. The video is about the loss of youth and innocence (or a friend for some), but for others it kinda seen as a farewell to Geri and the end of the Spice Girls as we knew 'em. Later that year, the girls followed up the song with a new standalone single called "Goodbye", written about Geri's departure. In preparation for their 2019 tour, all 13 Spice Girls music videos were remastered into 4K, but for some reason 3 of the videos had slight alterations. The original version of Viva Forever doesn't feature the lost boy as a fairy at the very end, it only shows the Spice Girls flying away. I personally think the original is better, because it makes you think of what happened to the boy, rather than "Oh, he's a fairy now". In case you're curious, here's a potato-quality version of the original: vimeo.com/251814282 EDIT: Fixed link.

Would definitely love a part two! Every once in a while I get the urge to listen to ‘Viva Forever’, it’s got such a nice atmosphere. But I can’t even remember the last time I listened to ‘Who Do You Think You Are’, so thank you! Evoking some really nice childhood memories here. Would be interested in your reaction to ‘2 Become 1’. :-) On a wholly unrelated note, I think you reacted to The Police quite some time ago, but haven’t really touched Sting on his own yet. I just love ‘Fortress Around Your Heart’, ‘Fields of Gold’, ‘If You Love Somebody Set Them Free’, ‘If I Ever Lose My Faith In You’, ‘Be Still My Beating Heart’, ‘Desert Rose’… Well, quite a lot of his songs. I grew up listening to Pet Shop Boys and Kate Bush etc. all whom I really love, and Sting was (is) definitely up there too. I’d like to think you’d enjoy his songs too.

Oh babe, you know you gotta do a part 2. The people require it! (Me, I'm people.) Love how you started with Holler, talk about starting off strong. I love every last one of these songs though. The "Viva Forever" music video however, did scar me as a kid. It creeped me out and made me sad, plus IIRC Geri had just left the group just prior to the release. For Part 2, I'm thinking "Too Much," "Mama," "2 Become 1," and "Spice Up Your Life." "Goodbye" and "Let Love Lead the Way" are good picks too but they're both heavy, slow-paced and emotional and I'd rather you get a mix of sounds.

I must admit that I've never seen this video for Who Do You Think You Are before, even though I knew it existed. I'm used to the Comic Relief version with the Sugar Lumps which is basically the same video filmed the same time as this but with different scenes that include the Sugar Lumps [not a real group but a comic version of the Spice Girls themselves] and I don't think Geri is ever seen in the wedding dress. I think it's more scenes of them altogether on stage but same energy throughout but more humourous. 3 weeks at no.1 in the UK in March 1997 as double-a side with Mama.

What I understand is that the video from Viva Forever was made like that because Geri already had left the groupe at that point. That’s why that song are on my dislike-list of their songs. She said in a documentary around 2007 that she knew while singing that song on a promotion for it that she had to leave the girls. So sad. I was so in love with them. Their music was a hygge part of my childhood. I still listen to it today, but it will never be the same as before Geri left i 1998. My personal favorits includes “Wannabe”, “2 become 1”, “Spice up your life” and many many more!! ❤🔥
