Very subtle. I think I comprehended the last minute. I normally get a lot from Shinzen's amazing explanations, but this went right over my head. :). Thanks, there's always value here for me.

Even after countless hours of attempts to meditate, I have had only a few times the thoughts have not been immensely distracting. That quiet suspension has never felt relaxing or freeing, but rather uneasy. I thought it was because I feared simply that the thoughts would come back very soon and I would have failed once again to achieve any real distance. I think this talk might explain what was going on. I can see it now in a positive light, not a failure but a sensitivity to the subconscious. A little disheartening how busy it is under my already busy conscious mind, but at least it is not a mystery.

So glad this was helpful. And you may, in addition, switch up the meditation techniques & strategies you've been using to find one that feels good and is interesting enough to keep you from commenting on (evaluating) the process. Steph's "10 Min Chill" might be a good one for you: www.strategic-mindfulness.com/free-10-min-chill In the meantime, thank you for sharing your experience.

I have never understood that "Freud discovered the unconscious". For me it has always been something obvious. You see everyday people going though life and you can see that their conscious motivations are not the ones that really moves them.

its not that he discovered it but he brought it to light in the world of psychologists. psychology hasnt always been taken seriously so its no wonder something obvious, pronounced and important has only come up. Im sure everyone has similiar speculation, nothing special there.

I'm not sure if this is relevant, but I experienced a tugging sensation when I smoked salvia. A real physical tugging, most prominently at my nose, and kind of a regression to baby-like state of fresh awareness, kind of "yes, I remember that" feeling.

I'll try and if this is a thing it's dramatic because A. I always thought processing subconcious material was something that couldn't be done in meditation amd B. It sounds very natural and easy!

The teacher Culadasa in his book The Mind Illuminated says it is very possible to process subconscious material. We can be unraveling past negative experiences without ever remembering them by being willing to accept the discomfort when it arises. It can be mild as Shinzen alludes to here or quite intense, with temperature extremes and spontaneous tremors. The claim is that if we can sit through them, they will be dissolved and not bother us again, so we come to new experiences with less baggage. I have to get back to this!

there is a lot missing from this lecture. i am able to peek in on my subconscious processing after i get the data from it. subconscious is a big tool for inventors and problem solvers. if you can harness the subconscious you gail acces to somthing like a super power out of the cartoons
