According to the Haynes service manual, the thermostat doesn't fully open untill 203 degree. So factor in the +/- 10% rule, you have nothing to stress on

Getting all tha air out is tricky. Drive it a few more times, any residual air will fart out into your overflow tank. 200 really isn't bad on a 100 degree day with a fresh radiator fill. Try driving it at night when it's cooler and do another temperature test, I'd bet the temps stay around 180 then.

After a long drive, my blue 78 hit 215 after I stopped - I did not know this as the temp gauge is t working. My yellow 82 has a oil cooler standard from the factory and it never goes over 170. It’s a Land Cruiser thing - or a dirty old rad… probably the rad for me.

200 isn’t really that bad - your timing can play a part as well - if you need more advance usually the engine will run hot.

This! 100%. There probably is air still in the system but it's also possible turning the heater on moved the air out of the heating lines and into the block. It will eventually work itself out but the steep incline trick does work (like you did on the 60). I've had my FJ62 up to 230 before and it didn't damage anything before I finally fixed it.

Where’s the sensor in the cooling circuit? It may have been dead headed then saw flow when you opened the heater valve. Either way it’s not in the same location as the thermostat so there will be some lag

I had the same frustrating problem with my Fj45…I had a flush out system thingy you know with the yellow caps at the firewall well when I opened that up it burped the system and it’s been perfect for 2 years now… what a pain tho for a couple of weeks…Blessings:)

I swear it's a FJ40 thing. The same thing happens with the 350 chevy in mine.... I 'fix' it by briefly opening the valve to the heater.... temp drops, everything happy....

The chain that was on that fuel cap (did you throw it away?) is meant to clip onto a springy pipe clip that holds the little rubber tube on that goes to the reservoir.

Same, I worked out a few more bubbles after the trip. I’m guessing that was it. Haven’t had the chance to run it long distance again but I’ll keep after it.

@@projectwrongway9127 I did add something to my truck. It's called watch dog, it's came from Australia. It saved me when my truck overheated. It gives out a loud beeping noise. I was able to pull over Thermostat Went bad Save my engine .
