I will say, as good as it would be to have a bridge, the ferries do work remarkably well. They're free to ride and leave regularly. I've never had to wait very long for one. And when the weather is bad it's nice to be "inside" during the river crossing. We do need a bridge though. Nord is expanding rapidly and those people will need a higher-capacity cycle route.

All the trouble that comes with charging a fee, is simply not worth it. A bridge is almost impossible, and a tunnel too expensive. And the municipality wants a good connection, usable by all, including school kids. It is not the Styx...
@TheVincent02683 ай бұрын
These ferries are called a rijkspont ( wiki.ovinnederland.nl/wiki/Rijkspont ), to cross the Noordzeekanaal and are part of the general infrastructure, like roads and bridges. On other places in the country there are also, often smaller, ferries where you need to pay. These are not rijksponten but owned by commercial parties. A pont is also called a veerpont or veer, were the word ferry can be recognized in veer.

When the North Sea canal was dug in the 19th century, communities were separated. So, the King promised by decree that there would be free ferries until eternity to compensate a little for the inconvenience. Fun fact, it was free also for cars until around 2000, but it got too expensive. Since then, cars need to pay. The reason being that by the time of the Royal decree, there were no cars yet. So his promise does not cover cars.

@@Huntracony When cycling, I'd take a tunnel over a bridge any day because you build up speed going in which you can use on the way back up. And both are quicker than a ferry. There has been talk of building a new cycle tunnel for years, but so far it's all just proposals.
