The movie that actually won for Best Picture Oscar was filmed in Africa, not one poc in it. It's was the biggest snub in Oscar history with 11 nominations. People were outraged. It was the epitome of 'Oscar's So YT' before social media. I consider it Thee winner, no other movie compared to this one.

I want y’all to know that the NAACP pretty much made sure the movie didn’t win because they thought it made black men “look” bad . We all know the Oscars is biased/ racist , so it made it even easier for them to ignore this film , not that they wanted them to win away. Basically black people made it even more difficult for them to win anything .

The reason they showed more of him.. was because of the "curse" she put on him.. she said "until you do right by me, everything you think of is going to fail" .. so they showed his life crumbling.... that made him "doing the right thing " at the end meaningful

The ending never fails to make me smile. Reuniting Celi with her sister and reuniting with her kids was the only good thing Danny Glover's character ever did for her.
@davidf5097

Spielberg felt the most intense scenes, like the girls being pulled apart, were too traumatizing for the actors to do extensive rehearsals and multiple takes so many were done in a single take. He also encouraged the actors to improvise. For example Oprah Winfrey's moving speech to Celie at the supper table (which you didn't excerpt) was a complete single-take improvisation. He just said, "Keep talking." I like when you take on more challenging material like this. Good job.

You're so sweet!! 🥹 I LOVE your reactions. Ik it's a little hard to understand Shug's story. Back then, free/powerful/unwed women were looked down upon. Shug was an "entertainer" (to put it lightly) so she lost the approval of her father "The preacher" and he never spoke to her again out of embarrassment. She was so proud to tell him that she married, but he ignored her. Finally, they had a breakthrough once Shug surrendered in church.
@Kenny-bu4uv

They BOTH had to surrender, Shug had to realize he only wants what’s best for her , she had to find a balance of leading her own life , but still loving God and her family . He had to realize everything isn’t so black and white and we are all HUMAN before anything.

It’s such a shame how dirty the Oscars did this movie. I think racism played a part for sure. I was 21 years old and working in a movie theater when it was released in 1985, and nearly every showing would be sold out. I must have seen it countless times. It’s heartbreaking at times, but also funny at times.

Yes its racist ,but it was easier for the award show to be racist against this movie, since a few fragile men from the NAACP (and Spike Lee) thought the movie made black men “look” bad so they protested the hell out of it . This movie alongside the Brave Little Toaster gave me so much existential dread at that age, but it wised me up a lot faster too. I need to re-read the book again. The lead in the choir I think is supposed to represent one of shug's children. She had a few supposedly all by Albert, but her parents raised them and disowned her since she wasn't married, being with a married man, and wouldn't repent. I think it's funny though watching this movie now, and realizing that the music is really similar to the music in Jurassic park..I know that Stephen Spielberg did both movies, but still kinda waiting on a dinosaur to show up.

Black Americans are denigrated, dishonored, and slain everyday. Business per usual. But the moment we show any semblance of dignity, any/everybody is liable to go Agent Smith and try to put us back in what THEY believe is "our place"-either a cell or a coffin. It truly is crazy.

You’re spot on, when it comes to this movie. Your opinion is a highlight of post slavery. Something that wasn’t that long ago. Sophia & the 2 sisters hit real hard for me. The idea, of supposedly being free, yet you (Millie, police officers & white men) join in with what u did to Sophia. Speaks highly to “The System”. Why should Sophia have to work for this woman……🧐? Simply because she asked…..? Bullshit! Both black men & woman were “R” by white men for 100s of yrs. In this movie it’s the late 1900s. Again, candidly, showing Post Slavery. So now what🤔? The Men are dishing out, (perpetuating)what was done to them, onto, his own children & women around them. At least the women around them, that would except that shit. It’s quite disturbing, if u ask me. Yet something that folks need to see.

"I think it pisses God off when you walk by the color purple in a field and don't notice it." I can't wait for the remake's upcoming take of turning a story of child and spousal abuse into... (check notes) ...a musical. 🤷‍♂️ Fun Fact: Oprah Winfrey and Whoopi Goldberg's first feature film. What Script Fact: At the dinner scene, Oprah Winfrey ad-libbed all her lines when she was talking to Whoopi Goldberg. After the scene, Goldberg walked over to Winfrey, gave her a hug, and told her that she has now become an actress. Emotion Over Experience Fact: Before production, Steven Spielberg felt very insecure about being director of the film. Spielberg felt that his knowledge of the deep South was inadequate and that the film should've been directed by someone who could've at least related to the struggles faced by many blacks living in the old south. Producer Quincy Jones then convinced Spielberg to take the role as director of the film, because of the excellent emotional E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982) direction out of the alien character.

Wonderful film. Great actors and cinematography. The only thing I never really understood was the adult children of Ceilie didn’t speak English. They were already speaking English when they left for Africa and were raised by missionary parents, who spoke English and were trying to teach the children in the village English and the Bible. Just weird choice by the director to have them not speaking English in the end.
