This movie takes place in an odd timeline where Goku either managed to barely kill Frieza with his base form, or managed super saiyan but couldn't control it, the assumption is this is a timeline where Goku goes home instead of staying on Yardrat cause he doesn't have instant transmission nor full control of said super saiyan form, which could mean that Trunks is about to arrive possibly?

In Goku's defense regarding thinking Cooler is Freeza, Freeza is a metamorphic species, he can transform and change his shape and even color scheme. I watched this movie the moment the unfortunate news about Toriyama’s sudden passing came to light. He designed the villains very well, and the moments were cool. The American soundtrack is so goated, too. Not perfect (I wanted Cooler to duke it out more with Goku, but the run time was calling for his number), but definitely rewatchable. Love this movie regardless.

Here is the thing it's a decent fun movie. Cooler's Shredder form is magnificent, and him being able to go thru the Kamehameha you got to admit it's freaking awesome. Here is what I think happened in this timeline- So in this version of events Roshi says Goku defeated Freeza. That must mean that the Genki Dama was able to kill Freeza, and for that reason there was no time to become a SSJ in the first place. It could be that if the Genki Dama killed Freeza it's the reason it might be the first time for Goku as a SSJ. In terms of when is it- You can easily stick it in the 3 years of training for the Androids no problem at all. If Gohan re-grew his tail for some reason I expected the GA.
