I don't think people realize that when you fall far enough, there's basically no difference between hitting water and hitting solid pavement. Like there's going to be a bit more give, but that surface tension matters a lot. Falling from Niagra Falls is unironically like jumping off a skyscraper, you'd die as soon as you hit the bottom if you don't smack your head against the rocks from the turbulence first.
@Jim87_3611 ай бұрын
You’d probably die BEFORE you hit the bottom actually. There is terminal velocity after all.
@dracocrusher11 ай бұрын
@@Jim87_36 That's not how that works. People aren't effected by high speeds, they're effected by sudden acceleration or deceleration. Like you can jump out of a plane and hit terminal velocity, yourself, and you'll be just fine UNLESS you hit the ground too quickly. I mean, the Earth is spinning way faster than terminal velocity, but you'd never notice because of inertia, right? Because an object in motion will stay in motion, so everything works exactly the same as if the Earth wasn't moving because it's all rotating at the same speed at the same time. I know it's a weird idea to get used to, but it's just how physics works, right?

They got lucky in that the fire started relatively high, so most of those in the stands fled forward, onto the pitch. Those that *were* stuck behind fled back, into the locked exit gates. That's where the 56 were found.

I was 10 years old when the Bradford City Fire was shown live. It, to this day, is still most horrific thing I've ever seen. The cameras did not turn away, we saw everything, and the commentators kept commentating. We watched people being burned alive. Hero's (not firemen - it all happened to quick) but members of the public and police went into the fire and dragged out of the stands in flames and beaten with coats to try and put the flames out. There was one gentlemen, a grandfather, who didn't run. He just stood there in the flames literally melting, until he couldn't be seen. Truly horrific. Beyond that, over the next 2 years, there were about 4 other utterly brutal stadium disasters in Europe.

Bradford Stadium fire is genuinely horrible-my forensics class did a case study on it last year (it was to understand how the Coandâ effect influences fires & explains how they intensify so rapidly in incidents such as the Bradford fire) & as part of it we watched the entire video documenting the fire’s progression. The sheer _SPEED_ at which the fire grew is literally terrifying, & it’s tragic to think that all of this could’ve been prevented…
@munky3426 ай бұрын
The Grenfell tower too. Could have been prevented with just £8000 worth of fire resistant cladding rather than skimping on it and installing cladding with no treatment whatsoever.
@DavidStruveDesigns11 ай бұрын
I remember seeing the full video of that stadium fire. The cameras kept rolling even after the live broadcasts were cut off. At one point the cameras focused on a man walking out onto the field completely engulfed in fire, with people around him desperately trying to tear his jacket off (which had partially melted to his skin) and put out the fire, before he collapsed onto the pitch and the camera moved away. They even found a person still sitting in the stands, who had died by burning rather than smoke because the fire spread so fast he didn't even have enough time to get up from his seat to get away (he was right by where it started). Yeah, a pretty horrific event which should never have happened - there had been complaints for years about the wooden stand, the built up rubbish, the fact people were allowed to smoke in the stands and the fact they kept locking the emergency exits after the match started to "stop people without tickets getting in or stop more people getting in than the stand could handle".

@@beybrain7896 Yeah that was a very sad and fatal lesson to learn from this incident. I'm not sure how commonplace it was in other buildings, but at football stadiums it was incredibly common for a long time. The trash under the stadium stands wasn't "dumped there", it was just the trash that had built up over years of no one bothering to maintain the stands and the stadium. The same thing caused the Kings Cross underground fire in London. That was on the escalators, where years of trash had worked its way into the greasy mechanics and then one discarded match set the whole thing alight.

Some context not explained in the video about the fans still chanting on the pitch whilst the stand was ablaze, is that Bradford City already won promotion at that point & only had that 1 match left. That's why the stadium was so packed & why fan morale was high. A lot of people were probably drunk & merry in celebration. Even with a fire going on, it's easy for a bunch of merry fans to just keep on celebrating whilst putting aside a fire happening right in front of them. If you watch the full video, the chanting stopped the moment it was clear that there were unfortunate souls being burned to death. Loads of fans, police & paramedics helped a lot of people trying to get onto the pitch & getting them away.

I live in Buffalo and have been to Niagara Falls countless times.. it's extremely powerful. That's why it's such a miracle that people survive going down. If you fall, it's a combination of water pressure, rocks, and height (about a 20 story building). People who survived are famous local lore but sadly it has a dark side with suicides being common. 20-40 attempts each year, or 1 every couple of weeks.

Niagara has a terrifying beauty. If you miss the rocks at the bottom you could get pulled behind the falls. The firefighters will get your body later. The cold can kill you fast in the winter and the undertow and whirlpools in the river below the falls will suck you down. Most boats aren't even allowed within a certain range of the falls. Not only is there a border issue and the fact they will ugly up the view but the river is so strong it will take boats over the edge in no time. No swimming for sure. I've been on that river and when the motors off it's crazy how fast the current takes the boat even miles upstream. Still one of the most breathtakingly beautiful places to see.

This isn’t meant to be hate, but some of the comments you make in serious videos like these just don’t sit well with me. Maybe it’s just me. I’m aware that humor is subjective and these could all be dark jokes, which I actually do often find some dark jokes to be funny, but it feels insensitive to be jokingly gambling on what happens to people in very clearly tragic stories. Like with the priest. This one’s a smaller nitpick but I just don’t understand why you criticized the poor priest for wanting a build a chapel for people to visit while on the road. It was an idea that he specifically focused around religious folk who don’t often have the opportunity to visit a church because they are on the road so much. Or with how you talked about the mistakes leading to his death. Yes his ignorance and lack of foresight is what got him killed, but he ultimately was a good person trying to do something bc for a good cause, we shouldn’t be shaming someone like that. Again this is just my opinion, not hate and it certainly isn’t me trying to say that my feelings on this are the unquestionable truth.

This was 1985 people, times were different then. A lot of people smoked everywhere. I was at the match, I was in that fire, its my home city. I was lucky, I escaped. Not everybody did including 2 people I knew. Please stop being so disrespectful

What’s terrible is my high school stadium was on the verge of collapsing into a sinkhole my sophomore year and they finally decided to redo it. 😂 can you imagine if that think went down during a game? Omg

Thar balloon tragedy reminds me of the Pixar movie Up. Did Pixar did get the inspiration for Up from this?

You can throw an inflatable raft into the bottom of the falls and it won’t come up for like 2 weeks…

They speak of a guy who dropped a cigarette, back the almost everyone smoked and u could smoke everywhere. So it’ll have been a lot more then one guy.

IDK if just the fall would've been enough to kill them, but the fact that there's frothing water at the bottom that would prevent you from coming back up, effectively causing you to drown; then again, maybe given the height it could've been a combination of the two, the impact at the bottom plus being pummeled & drowning. 🤷♀

Ok, I paused to make my prediction about balloon guy; I predict he's going to pass out from low oxygen then fall out of the chair to his death. Edit: Ok, wait, it's rainy. He's going to get struck by lightning. Well, didn't expect "blown off course over the ocean, drowned, and had half his corpse eaten by fish.

You know I never understood why people think God would protect them keep them safe, I’m not religious but I don’t think that’s how that works.
