This film hit home hard for me because this movie came out only 6 months after my mom passed away from complications from cancer. She had fought it on and off for 10 years, and because she was a single mother I was her primary caretaker. The scenes of Rocky struggling from the chemotherapy were hard to watch, but the fact that it was perfectly matched with (in my opinion) the best training montage sports movie history definitely uplifted me. The line of “If I fight, you fight” still stays with me because my mom and I had the same deal. She fought for 10 years on and off and while it was a rough fight, it was worth it. As for the movie itself, it’s a flawless masterpiece and my favorite sports movie of all time. It perfectly blends honoring the past by learning the lessons of Rocky’s past experiences and embracing the future by having Adonis walk his own path. Ryan Coogler actually tried to make Creed his first film but Sly Stallone said he would only work with him after he did at least one film. After he made Fruitvale Station Sly was all in. And I mean this from the bottom of my heart, this is (in my opinion) the best performance of his career. He was robbed of an Oscar but he won more awards that season than any other actor he was nominated with. The scene of him telling Donny that he wishes he could spend one more day with his wife still brings me to tears. And at the end of the final montage when Adonis is running to the gym and rallying all of Philadelphia to support Rocky makes me cry tears of joy. And finally I love that they finally said that the winner of the behind closed doors fight of Rocky v Apollo was Apollo.

Funny you mentioned Rocky 5 and I believe this Rocky kinda needed to go through that. In Rocky 5 he was so eager to train Tommy and he ended up neglecting his own son, and in this one he's like keeping his distance from Adonis at first, probably because he learned that lesson the hard way, but then realizes Adonis kinda is a neglected son too. I always liked that touch, makes the movie even better.

Good point.

I feel like in this movie Rocky was better equipped to be a trainer because he was in a better headspace for it. In Rocky V, everything for him was still fresh. He was living vicariously through Tommy Gunn because he wasn’t ready to accept the end of his own career, especially after losing all his money. By Creed, however, Rocky was much older and wiser. He had long since accepted that his time in the spotlight was over and settled down to a quieter life. Plus he gained a lot more knowledge and life experience in the years since Rocky V. He was more able to pass that on without living through Adonis.

In my eyes, Creed helped validate Rocky 5. When I see Rocky get motivated by Donnie to fight his disease, I think back to that scene in Rocky 5 when Rocky had a flashback to Mickey's "Motivation" speech before the day of Rocky's rematch with Apollo, and I realize that Rocky is experiencing what Mickey has been through. There was a time when Mickey felt like giving up on his life because he was losing everyone he cared about, but Rocky motivated him not to give up on his life. And now Donnie is motivating Rocky not to give up on his life. I'm crying as I am typing this comment, because it goes to show that though Rocky 5 wasn't one of the best Rocky movies, it is still a relevant part of Rocky's story, everyone has, or will go through a point in their life when they fall and there is not much they can do to go back to where they were, but have faith and understand that "nature is smarter than people think". 😊

I really like the Creed movies, I just see them as a continuation, not a spin off, I find it crazy how Michael B Jordan can really embody Carl weathers in how he carries himself, Like it looks like he could be his son irl, when he has the Creed colors on if he was slightly bulkier and had a fro he would look like Apollo from the earlier Rocky movies.

Well when Stallone shot Rocky 4 against the Russian Drago he Told Drago to hit him as hard as he could because he wanted it to look real. But Lundgren hit him so hard it sent him to the hospital it did something to the membrane around his heart. So Stallone almost died filming Rocky 4 in real life. Again you should do the Ramboo francise starting with First Blood.

I honestly don't think the point of Rocky 5 was to set up Rocky as a mentor to Tommy per say, but it was more or less showing how difficult it was for Rocky to accept the fact that not only was his career over, but he lost everything he worked for because of one simple mistake. Believe it or not, most athletes that are multimillionaires when they're in their primes usually end up homeless because they don't know how to balance their finances well, or they don't plan for the future. I think Stallone was just trying to show that side of reality for star athletes in my opinion. Plus, it seemed like Rocky was using Tommy to live through his success, since he couldn't do it anymore, which caused him to neglect his son and not move on. I think that's also why if you notice in Rocky 5, he had Paulie dress up as Santa for his son and his friends, without realizing that his son is way too old for that stuff. It shows how out of touch Rocky is from reality because he couldn't move on past what he once had. Once, Tommy proved he was nothing like Rocky, and Adrian talking sense into him, that's when Rocky realized that it was wrong to try to relive the glory days through Tommy because Tommy isn't him. And, he never was. Whereas with Creed, Rocky isn't trying to relive the glory days anymore, as he's already moved on in life from wanting to be a professional fighter. Hence, Creed was the perfect set up for him to take on that mentor role because he wasn't trying to relive the glory days through Adonis like he did with Tommy Gunn.

I also looked at the reaction from other channels about the Rocky films and I really have to say that your reaction was by far the best. You also understood the things about boxing. But you also understood what Rocky is really about. And, for example, that the deaths are of course tragic, but that makes the story incredibly more exciting. And others wish that nobody dies in the Rocky films, that everyone has a happy ending, that there is a love story, and that people shouldn't fight each other, because it's such a terrible sport, period, and in fact these other KZbinrs looked away 90% of the time when the fight scenes were shown. And there are KZbinrs who don't appreciate the fact that Sylvester Stallone almost always wrote the scripts himself and directed the films himself. And they simply don't understand the pop cultural impact the Rocky films have on the people. Or that in Creed 2 and Creed III these CGI scenes look completely ridiculous and have nothing to do with real stunts and real stuntmen A channel that has popcorn in the name for example.... "oh my gosh....oh my gosh....oh my gosh....oh my gosh....oh my gosh....oh my gosh....oh my gosh....oh my gosh....oh my gosh....oh my gosh....oh my gosh....oh my gosh....oh my gosh....oh my gosh......" So we really have to appreciate what we have seen HERE
