DUDE!!!! She's a pregnant teenager and she has to tell her dad that she's decided to keep the baby. That's what the whole song and controversy was about lol. That's so cute that you didn't know that. "But my friends keep telling me to give it up..." those lyrics mean that her friends want her to get an abortion. When she sings "I'm keeping my baby.." she literally means she's keeping the baby 😊.

Guys, he said in his pinned comment that he found out the actual meaning of the song/video after doing his research. We have to give people breaks when they react to this song. It's fascinating, tho, how most today think she's talking about her boyfriend. That's an interpretation I totally missed and could be plausible, but most back then would have seen it differently.

The genius of the song lies in its lyrics (that Madonna tweaked) that lead to a narrative(s) that’s been debated and still being interpreted several ways even today. It’s like a good art piece that evokes and draws differing reactions from viewers. But some of the lyrics in it appear to imply that the teenage girl character (who is pregnant) has made up her mind not only to keep the baby but keep her relationship with her mechanic boyfriend as well-who his father strongly disapproved (“the one you warned me all about; the one you said I could do without..”). Once she told her friends (and eventually her father) that she’s pregnant-they “keep telling me to give it up..”-meaning they would understand and maybe even prefer if she abort the pregnancy. But out of respect for her dad, she asked him for “some good advice, please..” on her dilemma and eventually for his “blessing” on her decision to marry and live with her boyfriend who she says said “that he’s going to marry me... we can raise a little family.. Daddy, daddy if you could only see, just how good he’s treating me, you’d give us your blessing right now ‘cause we are in love..” and after some expected anger and preaching from her dad, the video ends with her dad extending his hand to her and hugging her-love conquers all.. a happy ending. Of course religious bigots and conservative groups took it both ways criticizing Madonna for “promoting teenage pregnancy” and at the same time they liked that she was “anti-abortion” when Madonna was probably simply saying that the girl’s pregnancy was out of genuine love between her and her boyfriend and they will live with its consequences and honor their commitment to marry and raise a family. Most of us can relate to that.

I am fine with you not interpreting the video completely correlated to the song. The meaning you gave to it makes a lot of sense and your parallel to LGBTQ+ youth perfect. This, to me, is the genius of Madonna. She was able to convey a family friendly message by doing it in a very strong straightforward way, yet also address a deeper problem and connect to the youth she really meant to connect with. Madonna is an ally. She has always been. She’s seen first hand how family ties can make or break the life of young (and talented) queer people. I am pretty sure you got the deep cut meaning to the video right. I grew up with this video and song in the back of my mind ever since I was a little kid and while I was watching your video I teared up a little. It is so beautifully made and the cinematic aspect of it really moves you. I wish people made more videos like that!

Excellent video! This was always playing on MTV on heavy rotation. Madonna and Michael Jackson dominated MTV and made videos an artform where it tells a story. Other artists naturally started to follow suit since they were the King and Queen of that. This song was about teen pregnancy and keeping the baby. Some people were upset by the pro-life message they felt it was delivering. Anti-abortionists of course loved the message. I think both sides were reading too much into it though. This era also shocked the world because Madonna changed her appearance so dramatically. Showcasing a more polished classier image.

There is a reason why "Papa Don't Preach" begins with that allusion to string bowed instruments: they refer to Italy, classical music, Rome, the Pope, the tradition, thus a strong established way of thinking abortion coming from Catholic church. Then the song is abruptly teared up by a pop/rock band announcing the argument. And during the whole song the string bowed instruments (Catholicism) appears in riffs to avoid the public and POP ROCK discussion.

Taylor, I know the video makes us believe that the baby is her boyfriend, but in fact Madonna is talking about the baby she is expecting from the boyfriend. Papa is not only the father, is also the pope. Back then she was criticized by the feminists because the song was a statement about not having an abortion. Lately, in 2019, during the "Madame X" tour, Madonna sings again this song, just the first verse an chorus, but changes the lyrics for "but I made up my mind, I'm NOT keeping my baby". Then she stops and makes a speech against the attempts of overturn the case Roe vs Wade in the Supreme Court, by Republicans, that made abortion legal in the USA. The papa (pope in Italian) is the first time when Madonna directly attacked the catholic patriarchy. So she is at the same time going against the feminists and the patriarchy. About "True Blue", you were right. This album is for Madonna what "Thriller" was for Michael Jackson and was one of the must have albums in any vinyl collection in the 80's. This album was the first time Madonna took control of the whole production and has her signature in all the songs. From now on, all Madonna's work is controlled by Madonna. Now your next step is "Like a Prayer" and I can't wait to see your jaw dropping. hahahaha

It would be super cool if you did a Janet Jackson deep dive at some point as well!! Her albums Control (1986), Rhythm Nation 1814 (1989), janet. (1993), and The Velvet Rope (1997) are sure to blow you away. Each album has its own theme, they're all layered with interludes that give the albums a really nice flow, and the messages and instrumentals are always amazing. If you do decide to get into Janet at some point, I have to talk about her first two albums: Janet Jackson (1982) and Dream Street (1984). These albums are generally not good and never talked about mainly because she never had any creative control on either of them. Each of those albums have a few good songs, but they're mainly generic. For that reason, they COULD be left out, however, listening to them could also make a reaction to Control more powerful because the theme of that album is taking control of your own life in any and every way possible. Also, Control was the first ever new jack swing album and the instrumentals are so inventive and hard-hitting. Hope you decide to check it out, love the reactions as always!

The original album version of "Papa Don't Preach" is not the music video version but it's actually pretty close. Only the last minute of the music video differs from the album version because the album version fades early (4 minutes 27) and the music video has a longer outro and a completely different ending due to the fact that it stops brutally but what an ending : I love that. Actually I love both versions but I prefer the album/music video version than the Spotify/extended version because in the Spotify extended, the sounds seems harsher than in the album/music video version where the sound seems more polished and smooth. I don't why but it does. But the extended is nice because of the vocal effects that's true. And the extended is also very good because it's remixed by Stephen Bray : the original author of the music, so obviously he knew what he was going which is not always the case with outside help remixers.

Madonna got so much shit over this song & video. Religious folks blasted her which gets me even to this day because she’s basically saying she’s keeping her baby; her child, as opposed to getting an abortion. Had she sang about her right; her choice, it would have been even worse. I’m merely using that as an example in terms of “she can’t win for trying”. The holier than thou critics were always against Madonna regardless of her content. They hated what she represented. You didn’t see women with that kind of control or power and Madonna was definitely a force to be reckoned with. The Catholic Church criticized the story of a teenager having premarital sex and getting pregnant. It was a big mess. Well, unbeknownst to them, they only helped catapult her stardom even more. The more her songs or videos ruffled feathers, the more people would talk about her which would then have people curious and see for themselves or they would buy her albums & watched her videos. And if they thought this video was bad, wait till Like a Prayer. Man they totally lost their shit on that one! So glad you’re doing this because you’re seeing a lot of her highlights and biggest moments of her career for the first time. And I’m enjoying your reactions to this discography! Thank you!
