The thing about the cheese, the movie earns it's right to use it. It takes itself seriously. It never makes self aware jokes, nor does it belittle the things it cares about. Also, the score is fantastic.

As much as I loved this movie growing up, and I do still have a sweet spot for it, I can't deal with the premise as an adult! These two parents LIED! THEY LIED TO THEIR OWN CHILDREN about the existence of their TWIN SIBLING & other parent for years. Then made everyone else in the girls' lives complicit in that lie! Where is the family counseling bc a nostalgic boat ride & some wine doesn't just fix all of this?!!

This movie was the same year I was born in (1998)& I enjoyed watching it but what I never understand was that Nick & Liz had a divorce & decided to split the girls up & never told the daughter that they was raising about her twin sister until they met at summer camp . I agree that the twins was being lied to

This movie has given me a particular nasty aftertaste in recent years. My father is the type who went to the milkman and then started a new family years later. He and his family are essentially parent trapping us, as I didn't knew my half-brother existed until I stalked my father's social media once in a craving to know what he was up to, and my brother won't be told of my existence until they consider him 'old enough', like about 14-15 and it won't even be my dad having the balls to confess, but his youngest sister. I do not know where my brother lives, and even if I did, I'm scared of meeting up with him behind my dad's back because I do know him well enough he'll pin the blame on me and act like the victim. I know from my grandma this is exactly why his wife is complicit in the lie- just like grandma she's an enabler who considers him a victim and that the negative emotions that come with having to deal with the fact he abandoned me are basically my fault and actually forbade me to go near her family. No matter what I do, I feel like I'll lose. Putting your children in these kinds of situations is downright toxic and traumatizing. I'll never forget the pain I felt when I saw my dad holding a young boy in his arms, one that looked like him as a kid, like me as a kid (I've pretty much got a feminine version of my dad's face, same mouth and all). I felt like I was going to puke. Especially because I actually was in contact with his younger sisters, and none of them told me. It hurt.

I saw this movie so many times during my childhood that I started hating it. I knew every scene in order and most of the dialogues. Eight years passed without me watching anything from it. When I was 22 I watched it again, and I cried my eyes out. The movie is touching, and you can understand both of the girls' perspectives and emotions. The score is beautiful. In the end credits theme you can hear the Walt Disney's motif "when you wish upon a star, your dreams come true." This movie was crafted with love and care.

They used what’s called a photo double. When Lindsey was Annie or Hallie, they had someone with same height and hair color be the other twin from the back. For scenes like when they’re next to each other like in the rain, they film once with Lindsey as one the twins while the photo double walked thru it before they swap. Then they digitally combined both shots to make what you see. They did the same technique for Dove Cameron on Liv and Maddie, although she had two photo doubles since it was a TV series.

Recently, I was thinking that the Dad character seems quite…impulsive. The Mom, he just meets her on a cruise and they’re wed in a few days. Meredith, he basically starts seeing while his daughter is away at camp for a few months, and he’s already thinking of marriage? Guess after the first marriage didn’t work out, it never crossed his mind to see if this second relationship is feasible or not.

My husband has worked with a person who did not know they had a twin living in another country until the guys were 20-something. They had no idea the other existed. I'm sure it's not conventional or mainstream, but it can totally happen in real life. The person who lives in the US now got to meet their sibling when the sibling got married.

Das doppelte Lottchen (The double Lotte) written by Erich Kästner published in 1949 in German in Germany made into a movie adaptation in the 1950s...it's basically the more or less inspiration for all of these be it German Versions like "Charlie & Louise", English Version The parent trap from the 1960s or this =) I once also saw a German Version were the Twins only med as adults and I also saw a trailer in my youth for a japanese adaption of it. I personally if they use real set of twins like to kid a bit around like "OH look they found a 10-12 year old Set of Twins in the acting world again." And in the last Version from 2017 in Germany they went full circle back since "old names" became popular again....

I heard the director explain that by saying Hallie not knowing London had only ever seen the road way from the house to the phone box so that’s the way she went and there was actually a direct alleyway from the road the home was on to the phone box and park which would take half the time and that’s the way the Grandfather went when he guessed she was off to make a phone call.

This is a very fun movie. Some of those reunion scenes still brings tears to my eyes, and that after seeing it many times. This is a remake of a 60s version of the Parent Trap, starring Hailey Mills. Hailey was a teenager, which I don't think was a good as making the "twins" little girls. This is a great remake, the locations changed, but it very closely matches the original version.

I used to reenact the newt scene as a little kid using a kiddie spoon. I'd put the spoon on my head and then put it in my mouth and pretend it was the newt trying to get in and then I'd spit it out as far as I could. 🤣 The Parent Trap was my favorite movie at the time.

In the original 60's Hayley Mills version, the girls were from two different parts of the US. (Texas and Boston, if I recall.) In the 90's version, the city girl was moved to London, which means that she's breaking laws in two countries by traveling to the UK then back to the US using someone else's passport. Her sister and, on the second trip, her mother and butler are both aiding & abetting.

I know I'm super late to comment on this, but the reason the premise is so freaking wild by today's standards is because the original story (which later became a Disney movie in the 60s) was written in the early 20th century when married couples separating was still extremely uncommon and this kind of arrangement would actually happen.
@jeffreyweitzman6463

Fond memories of this when it came out, Disney really did give its own movie in the Hayley Mills original of the same name a top class treatment of love and care that went into this of the remake. Top supporting cast in their own right but everyone back then knew that the shining star for all her small years in age at the time was Lindsey Lohan - no one had heard of her before this but then this changed everything. Such a talent, she may have gone through tough times in her adult life but her performance in this so young is there forever no one can take that away from her and richly deserved!

And yes there was even one were the parents were already dead and they met as adults (also played by a German adult actress in a dobule role) 😂 😂
