@alanbaird6

That is the literal meaning, they find an excuse to hate and destroy. Find or create a difference and then weaponise it. If there's no racial difference, they will make a class division, it doesn't matter the why, it's all just an excuse for them to inflict as much fear and suffering as they can. Sad damaged individuals who don't know love.

I remember being in the theater watching this movie. As the audience, the s*** pie scene dawned on us at the same time as it did Hilly and her mother. And I remember the raucous laughter throughout the theater when we all realized what was in that pie. It was a way to connect with strangers and realize you were among friends there. We all shared a common experience of enjoying seeing Hilly get just what she deserved.

Good reaction, Centane. But regarding what you said about being part Dominican (Dominican Republic) and your family over there not treating the maids like how we see it depicted in the movie about the late 1950s/early 1960s....you have to also remember that even today in some parts of the Dominican Republic, citizens of the DomRepub actually enslave people from neighboring Haiti, forcing them to work in their homes for free. Yes, this goes on even today in some parts of the Dominican Republic.

Minnie came through that door for Celia like a mama bear. Always fight for what you love. And about the men being stronger than women. Maybe. Sometimes. But women should always stand their ground against abuse.
@MonAhgasInsomniAroELF
@MonAhgasInsomniAroELF Ай бұрын
sometimes standing your ground can be just as dangerous as (or worse than) putting up with the abuse. many men have murdered the women in their lives for less. but sometimes standing your ground/standing up for yourself means to leave and get yourself out of that situation, sometimes even secretly in the middle of the night. and in that sense you're absolutely right, women do need to stand their ground. they should never have to grin and bear with domestic abuse. (men too! i know men who were victims of their female s/o too.)

I absolutely LOVED this film. This is one of the best ensemble casts ever assembled (Jessica Chastain and Bryce Dallas Howard killed it in this, I've been fans of both ever since), and they managed to take a (on the surface) simple story about the women that were domestic workers in the Jim Crow South, and turn it into a massive commentary on life, classes, gender roles, family (both yours, and the one you choose), and the all-pervasive power of race in that society. Such a good flick.

Fun Fact: my family is friends with some relatives of the author of the book Kathryn Stockett. I went to school and graduated with I want to say her nieces or maybe cousins (I don’t know the exact relation) Anyway, also the director of the film Tate Taylor was born in Jackson, Mississippi. Not far from where I live. This and O Brother Where Art Thou are two films that I hold very very close to my heart because of the family connection I have with them. For the latter, parts were filmed in my dad and grandparents hometown of Vicksburg and my grandparents got to be extras in the film.

29:49 one thing that people abroad don’t necessarily understand is how racism works in America, and especially why Black Americans are so outspoken about it. But people from the 1940s and 1950s, heck even the 1930s are still alive. And they had children. Those children are the people who are in charge. My parents were born in the 1960s. They were put into segregated nursery’s. My aunt was married to a man who first integrated public schools. My daughter’s godmother was so light-skinned that she was accidentally put in the white nursery in the 1970s. I grew up being told that I was “so articulate” in the late 1990s and early 2000s. They don’t mean that as a compliment, because they’re actually saying you’re a “credit to your race.” This film is actually depicting recent history. And these attitudes definitely still exist.

It's a tragedy that racism has been a large part of our country (US), and certain very high up people in US politics has brought it back to the forefront for the past eight years, emboldening such people to try a take us back to this time. Hopefully this November enough people will vote to keep it at Bay. Fingers crossed. I'd be lying if I said I was not nervious about this election. This is the first election where I have been nervious for the outcome because of how it will affect others.

My aunt has a maid in Dominican Republic. We have struggled with money all my life, never had any Barbie dolls, right medication, newer clothes and such since we couldn't afford it. My family and I first managed to afford things after I started working 3 jobs when I was 16 💛 I live with my aunt when I visit family in DR, that's because she has space for us. One family member being more lucky doesn't equals that everyone in the family grew up rich. Dominican Republic is also far behind than Norway, where everything is much more expensive 💛

Okay Camilla I’m more interested in your story and heritage. Is your mom Dominican? Do both your parents live in the Dominican now? What’s your maid’s name? I get so interested in cultures of others. And you said that English is your third language? What’s the other one besides Spanish?

I am mix of Norwegian and Dominican, we live in Norway :) My dad is not with us, more information about that is in the description of my channel 🩷 I speak Norwegian, Spanish & English. Maid's name will be private as I never share any information of anyone other than myself online. Just out of respect as I've decided to be a public person, and they have not 💞

Its a good film. It's also another 'white saviour' movie. A genre there is more then enough of..
