That is the literal meaning, they find an excuse to hate and destroy. Find or create a difference and then weaponise it. sometimes standing your ground can be just as dangerous as (or worse than) putting up with the abuse. many men have murdered the women in their lives for less. but sometimes standing your ground/standing up for yourself means to leave and get yourself out of that situation, sometimes even secretly in the middle of the night. and in that sense you're absolutely right, women do need to stand their ground. they should never have to grin and bear with domestic abuse. But regarding what you said about being part Dominican (Dominican Republic) and your family over there not treating the maids like how we see it depicted in the movie about the late 1950s/early 1960s....you have to also remember that even today in some parts of the Dominican Republic, citizens of the DomRepub actually enslave people from neighboring Haiti, forcing them to work in their homes for free. Yes, this goes on even today in some parts of the Dominican Republic.

Viola Davis has repeatedly expressed regret over starring in The Help claiming she feels like she "betrayed myself and my people" and that the film was "created in the filter and the cesspool of systemic racism". Bryce Dallas Howard has also mentioned that she would not agree to star in the film today, acknowledging that it was "told through the perspective of a white character and was created by predominantly white storytellers”.

Well - Slavery, The Jim Crow laws, & desegregation, didn't happen strictly on the voices & efforts of the black people. Lots of whites perticipated in the underground railroad & efforts to change minds, & change the laws, & many whites participated in the boycotts, & other vehicles for ending the Jim Crow laws. Whites also were killed or imprisoned for aiding & abetting blacks, & being black sympathizers. During the Holocaust, Jews didn't just help themselves out of that time, & circumstance. It took a lot of Jewish sympathizers & people who just believed in doing the right thing, to help some people escape, & to deliver children & babies to safety. An extremely oppressed minority has to have Divine help & the help of those on the outside looking in, who care, to help stop what's been going on. So yes black voices, black stories, or that time era should be heard. But whites of that time were also apart of the story, & also have a story to tell. I don't see anything wrong with THIS story. I think it's a wonderful story, & everyone in it did a wonderful job. It might be fictional characters, & storyline, but the nature of it is true to character for the time period I think. Anyway, it's better than letting revisionists get their way, & make it like it never happened. 💁♀️

I absolutely LOVED this film. This is one of the best ensemble casts ever assembled (Jessica Chastain and Bryce Dallas Howard killed it in this, I've been fans of both ever since), and they managed to take a (on the surface) simple story about the women that were domestic workers in the Jim Crow South, and turn it into a massive commentary on life, classes, gender roles, family (both yours, and the one you choose), and the all-pervasive power of race in that society. Such a good flick.

Fun Fact: my family is friends with some relatives of the author of the book Kathryn Stockett. I went to school and graduated with I want to say her nieces or maybe cousins (I don’t know the exact relation) Anyway, also the director of the film Tate Taylor was born in Jackson, Mississippi. Not far from where I live. This and O Brother Where Art Thou are two films that I hold very very close to my heart because of the family connection I have with them. 29:49 one thing that people abroad don’t necessarily understand is how racism works in America, and especially why Black Americans are so outspoken about it. But people from the 1940s and 1950s, heck even the 1930s are still alive. And they had children. Those children are the people who are in charge. My parents were born in the 1960s. They were put into segregated nursery’s. My aunt was married to a man who first integrated public schools. My daughter’s godmother was so light-skinned that she was accidentally put in the white nursery in the 1970s. I grew up being told that I was “so articulate” in the late 1990s and early 2000s. They don’t mean that as a compliment, because they’re actually saying you’re a “credit to your race.” This film is actually depicting recent history. And these attitudes definitely still exist.
