Technically, that’s not really true. Back in the day teens and adults running away used to be a really big problem in America. Because of this policing took a more neglectful approach when it came to filing missing person reports. Even though it’s technically true that it was never a rule, if you were ever interested in look into true crime from the 70s-90s you’ll find the majority of the families with missing loved ones were told to wait an extended period of time before investigations would happened. Luckily, in our more modern era, this view was amended.

@@ShyknitI mean the fact that it freaks ppl out so much due to its realism is probably the main reason it was made, since that’s what most ppl watch and make horror movies for lmao. not necessarily the realism, but the adrenaline rush of being afraid. ppl who like horror movies tend to not like when they can tell it’s fake, bc it cuts the tension/adrenaline short and takes you out of it. it’s PERFECTLY reasonable to not want to be freaked out or scared, but ppl’s thresholds for fear can be a lot higher depending on the person, so some horror creators want it to look as realistic as possible.

Something I think is worth noting is that this film is not only satirizing true crime documentaries but also how they, as well as the media, tend to fixate on the killers and borderline glorify them rather than focus on the issue and those who were victimized by them. They don’t always present real solutions or takeaways other than "here's a documentary about a serial killer. Isn't it awful? Isn't it interesting? Why are they like this? Why are they doing this? Look at their crimes. I'm going to tell you every gruesome detail of all of the horrific, terrible things they've done." Not only does this divert from what's important, but it gives these killers exactly what they want: fame and notoriety. They want the attention and to be feared and they want to be seen as important. This documentary almost does exactly that, and therefore fails to do what it's supposed to do. At the end of the day, these killers are pathetic, lowlife losers and most of them know that, which is part of why they do what they do. They need to be reminded that their actions have no value to us whatsoever and that justice will triumph. Whatever it takes to bruise their egos and help the victims because they don’t deserve admiration and the victims don’t deserve to be victimized.
@ladycobrana8525 ай бұрын
Damn right. Each of these people are nothing more than sick humans who try to be something more than the loser they are. People try to say that the brutality or violence is something that should be feared and “you wouldn’t live saying that if they were in front of you”.
@specificsoupАй бұрын
Yeah, the way I read this film is that it’s satirical, and kind of funny in parts, when they’re interviewing people - and then the VHS clips are the “real horror” part. I don’t know how well it gets its message across overall, but it definitely feels like a parody.

If your wondering how common it is to run across an active serial killer - I had an interaction with Todd Kohlhep in the early 2000s when he was a Realtor. My mom had a bad feeling and didn't want to work with him after the first meeting. In 2017, I lived 20ish min from where he kept his victims in Woodruff, South Carolina and when I moved, I found out he lived in my old apartment complex around 8 years prior. We haven't had an openly known serial killer in a while, but it was genuinely unnerving how close it all was.

I used to be a Girl Scout around the time this is claiming to take place. Started out as a Daisy and ranked up and all that, so technically I was just a Daisy back then. Sadly, it was fairly common at that time for parents to just let their LITTLE GIRLS go door to door to sell their Girl Scout cookies. Listen, I’m Puerto Rican and Nigerian, my Mami was NOT playing them games!! 😭😭 However, it was interesting how the rules ended up changing even over the few short years that I was in GS to have parents not do that anymore. Which is insanely wild to me because now, I look back at that and think, “Y’all were people who lived through the ‘70s & ‘80s where serial killers were rampant and y’all thought letting little girls sell cookies door to door was ever a good idea?!?!” Nah. Not me, not my children, not ever.

The film premiered at the 2007 Tribeca Film Festival, but had a troubled release history; it was originally slated for theatrical release in February 2008, but was removed from the release schedule. The film had a brief video-on-demand release in 2014, but remained unavailable on home media. In October 2017, the film was released and remastered on DVD and Blu-ray by Scream Factory. So unless you were in the right place at the right time, you wouldn't have easily been able to see this film until ten years after the initial release. I truly was not able to get this movie out of my mind for days after watching it, so I get it.
