This movie is brilliant. Interestingly, Dreamworks also did the Joseph King of Dreams movie, which is set before this movie in terms of religious stories, so one could almost watch them as a pair. Drawback to that though is knowing, as they're happily resting, being told the land is theirs, Pharaoh saying their children will come to call it home, you realise he had no idea he descendents would turn the people he welcomed happily to Egypt into slaves. I'm sure he was looking down on them from the afterlife with shame and disappointment
@ToHoldNothing2 ай бұрын
I forget which is seen as more accurate,but I think Prince of Egypt had slightly more material, or comparable. Still had to trim down things versus Joseph King of Dreams, which comprises the last chunk of Genesis, while Prince of Egypt has to cut down 20~, which includes many other subplots,like Moses having a son with Miriam, plus I think they imply a time skip to the point where the Israelites have already wandered in the desert for 40 years and he presents the Ten Commandments, which is still only halfway through, there's all the stuff with the golden calf and Moses seeing God's backside (sort of)

My pastor has been going through the Bible step by step, going through and sifting through the teachings of the Word, and giving the translations and historical contexts of scripture. All this to say, the English language while helpful in giving accessibility to the masses, is still quite imperfect. In the translation, the implication and description of God ‘hardening Pharoah’s heart’ is actually God pressing Pharoah’s heart to a decision. The Word of God is direct, we do have free will and the ability to choose. The unfortunate however is only that God has the Plan to save everyone who will believe. So the ones who go against that will eventually harden their heart and tell God to step off. Then consequences follow.

Playing with the Big Boys is such an underrated number in this movie. Sure, the two high priests are caricatures and they're pretty silly. But the opening of the song where they bring in a procession of acolytes and supplicants all chanting a litany of invocations to DOZENS of gods is chilling. These guys are bringing the full might and power of the Egyptian pantheon against Moses and his single shepherd's God. They pull every flashy trick they can think of. And yet Moses is able to stand before all that and do what they cannot. He has the courage to speak truth to power. To tell the man he considered his brother for most of his life that he is wrong and that he needs to set his slaves free. Everything about the storytelling of this film is SO well thought out from a narrative sense, whether you're a believer or not.

11:15 so for those who do not know Bible Lore, when God says He will harden Pharoh’s heart (or anyone in the Bible for that matter) He is not literally making them stubborn but instead letting them remain that way. The reason it is phrased this way is because God has the power to soften it but decides not to so to leave a lasting impression on the Jews, something for them to say “yeah our God is not one to mess with” (obviously it didn't work for some but that is again their fault. Long story short Pharoh (and in extension the rest of us) are to blame for the actions taken and it is only the good we do that is attributed to God because He is good.
@negativecharisma758321 күн бұрын
The movie condenses this into the plagues song, but in the actual story, he asks Moses to tell God to call off the plagues several times and tells him he'll let his people go, then as soon as God does so, Pharaoh hardens his own heart and reverts on his promise, basically "toying" with God over and over again. When God starts to harden his heart, it represents the point of no return for Pharaoh, where God simply lets him keep what he wants: his own pride, which eventually rises up to destroy him.

11:18 Not quite, usually the idea in the story is that Pharaoh already has a hardened heart and at some point during all that is going on, God just gives him over to that. The way it tends to be worded or told to people is what throws them off. In this film Ramesess is shown to be driven by his own stubbornness right from the get go, and even during the plague song he has a passing line saying "then let my heart be hardened". Therefore, one could argue that the same idea is being conveyed here 🤔.

Exod. 10. [1] And the LORD said unto Moses, Go in unto Pharaoh: for I have hardened his heart, and the heart of his servants, that I might shew these my signs before him: But the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart, so that he would not let the children of Israel go. Seems pretty interventionist to me, not exactly a natural state of stubbornness, which honestly would make more sense and the narrative in the film does a good job of that, God is barely in the story versus the bible's narrative
@CLDJ2272 ай бұрын
@@ToHoldNothing Keep in mind though that when Moses first confronts Pharaoh (in Exodus 5 I think) it mentions how he hardened his own heart. It's not until I think like the sixth or seventh plague that it starts to say that God is hardening it. Hence why I said in my comment that the idea is that God is giving pharaoh over to something that is already in him not making him be something that he isn't.

Or because Pharaoh was stubborn and then God prodded him back to it, it's still Pharaoh's fault entirely? Either way, sounds an awful lot like blame shifting. God intervening in any way is unethical if the whole principle is human freedom. Disney and Dreamworks might never give us another Biblical movie anytime soon (Disney had "The Big Fisherman" back in the 60's). However, some Disney alumnis are working on a new 2D animated film, "Light Of The World" that's to be released in the summer of 2025. It's about the story of Jesus seen from the point of view of a very young John Zebedee. Looking at the pictures, it'd be no shock that the filmmakers have been looking to "Prince Of Egypt" and "Joseph: King Of Dreams". Jesus looks so much like Moses!

We call it Kemitism (May have misspeleld it tbh) in terms of like "egyptian religion" although back in those days it was simply just "The gods" etc and you had the names of said gods, no real brand given to the religion itself. Just like how with Norse religion which we today call Asatruar (The belief in the Aesir gods) named after the race of the gods, the Aesir/Vanir But simply just back in those days there weren't labels for the religion. Religious labels only really came about later as polytheism slowly receeded and religious groups started to infight amongst each other like how the Christians, the jews and the "pagans" of ancient rome fought each other.

I'd love to see a reimagining of the Exodus story where the religious aspects are there, but without it being the chosen people narrative and a key "winner", versus just a struggle where there may not really be a winner, just the victor based on something that respects human rights more, not just wields power for power's sake. Make it more about the human relation to the divine instead of the divine just stepping in and saying, "Hey, I'm here, I'm the important part of the story!"

God gave Pharoah every opportunity for Pharoah to repent and let the israelites go, but Pharoah missed the opportunity and God shut the door, making redemption for Pharoah no longer possible.

For the bit where it says God Hardened Pharaohs heart I'm pretty sure his heart was already hardened. If we are talking about internal context with the movie God told Moses that Pharaoh will not listen, and we see the seeds being planted by his father before that interaction takes place. Its foreshadowing how his stubbornness and pride prevents him from coming to reason. Now in terms of biblical context Iv heard that when it says that God hardened his heart its more so saying that he allowed Pharaoh to have his way. The way it was explained to me, and ofc you can look this up, was that the line "God hardened his heart" came after the plagues and warnings were made. In this way Pharaoh hardened his own heart first then God gave him up to his own hardened heart.

Just want to point out: God hardening Pharaoh’s heart doesn’t have to mean he *made* Pharaoh dismiss Moses. It’s could also be implying that Moses’ worship of God will cause Pharaoh’s heart to harden, of his own will. He’s basically saying “Praise me to the Pharaoh, but know that your praise will make Pharaoh angry, and he will refuse to do as you say,” or something along those lines. When he says “I will harden Pharaohs heart” he doesn’t have to mean it literally. He’s saying Pharaoh’s sin against him is what hardens his heart. This is proven in other Exodus verses, where it says that Pharaoh hardened his own heart via sinning against God. So we know that sinning and hardening someone’s heart is explicitly linked.

According to some sources if one had to describe Moses and Rameses, their connection was more similar to Uncle and Nephew than brothers, but one DOES have to wonder what their bond was like on a deeper level; one could easily refer to 10 Commandments (1956) as a guide BUT...A still Hollywood-esqe approach with careful research. Also about the literal vs metaphor, some believe God's actions hardened Rameses' heart not He did so literally and Rameses had a choice to cry uncle ANYTIME he wanted. Also each plague was a direct attack on each of their gods to show they had no power to resist, they were but stone objects made by man. Also a nitpick would be that Aaron was with Moses when he spoke to Pharaoh, since fun fact, Moses had a speak impediment. Regarding the Red Sea, it was MUCH wider than this, and there was FAR more Hebrews escaping than what some portrayals have, there were ALSO Egyptians fleeing with them ATOP this.

@tomogotchi91402 ай бұрын
I’m not an expert, but what I took from it was that god wanted to show the ugly side of the Pharaoh's pride and contempt for his servants, each plague being an allegory for what the pharaoh truly is and that it will all go away once he lets go. Also, if god simply took his people with his power, the Egyptians would still hunt for them and continue slavery regardless, it had to be done in a way that’s more permanent, and once pharaoh let go it would truly put and end to the concept altogether. I’m sure some more versed in bible studies could tell you more or correct me, but that’s what I took from it.
