Korea is a country where 70 percent of its land is mountainous. In the olden days, Koreans believed that each village had a guardian deity who protected it. They called it a "정령(spirit)" Spirits are difficult to translate into English, but they combine fairy + ghost. The identity of the woman in the white outfit in the work is a "spirit." So the being that she referred to as "Grandma" would be "대정령(Great Spirit)" the mother of spirits The reason she picked up the items that the villagers dropped was to protect them from the devil and its spy. The "spirit" is a sacred being that protects the mountains and villages

Dude...the climate in Korea is the same as Virginia or Washington DC. Its on the same latitude....they have 4 season just like any other European countries...yes Asian country like China, Korea, Japan, Mongolia, Turkiye all have 4 season same like in EU and in northern part of USA.

That's not exactly true. Korea has all 4 seasons, yes, but much colder than Virginia or DC. Similar cold winter weather to Chicago or Toronto. Spring is similar to North Carolina Mountains or Japan, Summer is to California or Oregon, and Fall is to Tennessee or Germany.

The woman is the Guardian of the village

The woman dressed in white is like a guardian deity who protects the mountains and land of the region. A film that reflects the Japanese colonial era to some extent. In order to protect Gokseong from the intruder, the Japanese devil, she kept circling around him, and the devil, knowing her identity, tried to catch her. But she made him fall off a cliff and lose his strength. However, She was the guardian deity of the village and could not escape the land, so she could not chase him until the end. In front of the yard where she had created a barrier, the shaman started bleeding and became scared and tried to run away. The photo in the shaman's car when she was trying to escape is the same one the Japanese demon has, suggesting that the two are on the same page. And the underwear the shaman was wearing is called Japanese fundoshi. 흰옷을입은 여인은 그 지역의 산과 땅을 지키는 수호신과 같은 존재. 일제 식민지 시대를 어느 정도 투영시킨 영화.침입자인 일본 악마로부터 곡성을 지키려고 계속 그의 주위를 맴돌았고 그녀의 정체를 안 악마가 그녀를 잡으려했다.하지만 그녀가 그를 벼랑으로 떨어뜨려 힘을 잃게 만들었다.그러나 그녀는 그 마을의 수호신이라 그 땅을 벗어날수 없어 그를 끝까지 쫒아가지 못했다.그녀가 결계를 만든 마당앞에서 무당이 피를 쏟아내었고 겁을 내고 도망가려했다. 무당이 도망치려할때 차에 있던 사진은 일본 악마가 가지고 있는것과 같다.그 둘이 한편임을 암시한다. 그리고 무당이 입고있던 속옷이 일본 훈도시라고 불리는 속옷이다.

To understand this you kinda need the knowledge of traditional korean stuff. Anyway what i understand is the lady in white is a regional spirit who ward off evil spirits. Korea use to have wooden totem representing regional spirit that wards off evil spirit. And when the shaman was doing his ritual he was chopping off the wooden totem and hammer it with nails. So basically he was trying to kill off the lady in white. And japanese was just doing some ritual making dead ppl zombie or something. Even for modern koreans it’s hard to understand unless ppl explain it to you. Lol also there was a scene the shaman was wearing japanese traditional underwear so that was a hint also. There must be something about crows but not sure. First time watch it is kinda overwhelming that you feel it is a well made movie but don’t wanna see again, but once you understand the movie and process it in your mind, you kinda wanna rewatch it.

Yes, the Korean movie, "New World" that came out in 2013, starring Jung Jae Lee aka Gi Hun Seong, the main character in Squid Game. This movie is so fire! The storyline, the soundtrack are off the chains!!! Definitely top 5 in my favorite Korean movies!

점수가 7졈인 이유는 곡성이란 영화의 정서상 한국인이 아니면 모를 요소가 너무 많았음 외국분들이 보기에 공감하기가 쉽지않음 영화는 사실 계속 일본인이 범인이라고 보여줬음 일본인이 와서 이상한일이 발생하기 시작했고 꿈에서 계속 일본인은 악마였고 너무 일본인이 범인이라 생각하게 만들었음 그때부터 관객들은 일본인이 범인일라가 없다 이렇게 쉬울리없다 반전이 있을거다 스스로 다른 범인을 만들고 추리하기 시작했고 여성과 일본인중 누가 악마일까라는 질문은 관객 스스로 만들어낸거임 감독이 미끼를 던지고 관객이 미끼를 문건 관객의 의심에서 나온거임 감독이 한거라곤 계속 일본인이 범인처럼 의심스럽다 그걸 보여준것밖에 없음

보통 사람들은 다른 것. 새로운 것. 자기에게 익숙하지 않은 것에 대해 거부감 또는 이질감을 가지게 됩니다. 마을 사람들은 증거가 없는 상황에서 그냥 일본 사람이라는 이유만으로 이미 그를 의심하기 시작했습니다. 화면을 보고 있는 관객들도 그 상황에서 이미 일본인을 범인으로 생각하게 되었을 것입니다. 이게 감독이 뿌려 놓은 미끼를 모두가 물어버린 상황이지요. 외국인에 대해 이질감을 느끼고, 그게 의심을 낳고, 의심이 범인을 만들어 갑니다.이제 모든 상황이 일본인이 범인이라는 것을 향해 뻗어 나갈뿐 다른 선택지는 없습니다.

@@brosnshows If you pay attention at the start of the film the Japanese guy is inserting some bait on a string with two hooks, hinting at two killers. At the start of the film people mention that this all started when the Jap arrived but forgetting that a The Shaman arrived at a similar time. So their prejudices makes them focus on the Jap while their trust of the (Korean) Shaman lets him move arround uncontested, and is even allowed to perform rituals in their home finalizing the curse.

A. The girl in white was chasing the Japanese devil and in order not to be chased, the japanese devil intentionally threw his body from the cliff to the roadside (In audience perspective, the lady in white pushed the Japanese and killed him - which is not true). So the dead body saw the Main character and because of their nervousness, they threw the japanese devils body (in order for them to commit a sin). B. Another point is when the MC visited the Korean Shaman, as you can see he was wearing a Japanese attire(underware) which means he is working with the Japanese devil. C. When the korean shaman visited the house of the lady in white, he vomitted. That means the lady in white has the power to harrass them but has no power to kill them since she is a good ghost(protector of the village). D. While the korean Shaman was dancing in order to kill the Japanese devil, actual he was dancing in order to prepare the exorcism of the little girl. He is trying to kill her. While doing dancing, the japanese devil waa also praying and he while doing that he was hurt. He was not hurt by the Korean Japanese, he was hurt by the lady in white. As u can see the lady in white was in the house of the Japanese devil. E. The plant placed above the gate is a protection it means it will only take effect he listened to the lady in white and wait until 3 shout of the rooster, he will be saved in a way that if he came back to their house, the devil inside little girl will be vanished. There are lot to tackle in this movie. THE WAILING movie is for advanced minded watchers. IT IS A MASTERPIECE. ONE OF A KIND.

I think the movie "Gokseong" is a metaphorical expression of the tragic history of the Republic of Korea. The Japanese devil who dirtyed the Gokseong Village is the Japanese Empire that invaded the Republic of Korea, and the native female ghost who fought the Japanese devil is the Korean independence activist. In the end, female ghosts are defeated by Japanese demons, and the devil wins. I am sorry to the American people, but Catholicism, which is indifferent to Japanese demons, seems to have expressed the U.S. military that made them work for major ministries rather than liquidating the pro-Japanese rebels who were remnants of the Japanese Empire even after the Japanese colonial rule was defeated. The movie ends with the Japanese devil winning. The same applies to Korea today. Descendants of pro-Japanese rebels pose as strong influence in the country.

It's a lot about faith. There are a lot of biblical references in the film such as Peter denying Christ before the rooster crows three times and when the woman throwing the rocks, it was referencing when Jesus told the people who were about to stone the adulterer for the person without sin to cast the first stone. But from the opening passage with the quote from Luke, you'd know there would be biblical references.

When I first watch this movie. I was super confused too. Took me like a second watch or third to start catching more details, and what some scenes may actually means. I believe during the shaman ritual and the girl was wailing like she's going to die from the pain. I believe the shaman was attacking the girl on purpose since him and the demon are on the same page. That last nail to the wood or whatever it was, could have ended the girl (or made her worse and not for the better) but the father stopped the ritual before that could happen. The devil was using his powers to conjure the dead man in the car back to life, and maybe the devil took a few hits from overusing his powers. Unless the ghost lady in white was attacking him in some ways or form that we didn't see or know of. Those were my theories.

This is a masterpiece! Amazing slow burn movie! Korean cinema is so good! But for a amazing K-drama.. I suggest the horror/thriller serie "The Guest" and for a amazing movie thriller "The Chaser"

I feel like at the end, the Spirit had already given up on the daughter, mother and grandmother. they were impossible to save, but their souls and future victims could be saved by defeating the demon before he could finish the ritual by taking the pictures.

한국인들이 망상을 섞어서 복잡하게 설명하고 있지만 그건 그 한국인들이 배경지식이 없어서 그런 것이고, 이 영화의 본질은 유대교도의 시점에서 본 예수 그리스도임. 탈무드나 유대인 학자가 쓴 예수에 관한 기록을 신약성경과 섞어서 만든 것이 이 영화임. 기독교도인 나홍진 감독 자신이 인터뷰에서 밝혔듯이 이 영화는 "좋은 사람들이 불행을 당해서 일찍 죽는 걸 보고서 과연 신에 대한 믿음이 옳은 건가에 대한 회의감이 생겼다" 이런 의문에서 예루살렘 유대인들이 왜 예수를 못 박아 죽였는지에 대해서 나름의 추측을 전개한 작품임. 여기서부터 스포일러 있으니까 안 본 사람은 읽지 말 것. 1. 일본인(쿠니무라 준)은 예수 그리스도에 해당하고 곡성 주민은 예루살렘 유대인들에 해당함. 2. 첫 장면에서 쿠니무라 준의 낚시 장면은 예수가 제자들에게 "너희는 사람을 낚는 어부가 될 것이다"라고 말하는 것과 대응함. 실제로 쿠니무라 준은 자신의 정체를 미끼로 곡성 주민과 관객들을 낚고 있음. 3. 신약성경에서 예수는 사람들의 병을 고쳐서 기적을 행함. 그러나 영화에서는 쿠니무라 준이 병의 원인으로 지목됨. 이것은 당시 유대인의 시점에서 예수가 질병을 몰고온 자로 보였을 것이란 의미임. 4. 영화에 등장하는 남자 무당(일광)은 사도 바울에 해당함. 신약성경에서 사도 바울은 기독교 신자들을 심하게 억압한 유대인인데, 나중에 기독교로 개종하여 널리 전도한 인물로 기록되어 있음. 그러나 유대인의 시점에서 사도 바울은 처음부터 예수와 결탁한 스파이로 보였을 것임. 그래서 영화에서 일광은 처음에는 일본인을 욕하고 저주하지만 나중엔 일본인과 한패로 등장하는 것임. 5. 마지막 장면에서 쿠니무라 준이 손바닥에 난 못 구멍을 보여준 후 악마의 모습으로 변신하는 장면은 예수 부활 소식을 들은 유대인들의 인식을 보여줌. 유대인들은 그것이 거룩한 기적이 아니라 악마의 흑마술이라고 생각했을 것임. 실제로 탈무드에선 그렇게 기록하고 있음. 6. 영화에서는 쿠니무라 준이 악마로 비춰지는 것을 막기 위해 애매모호한 장면이 몇개 삽입되었음. 가령 쿠니무라 준이 트럭에 실린 한국인(박춘배)의 시체를 보고 의식을 치르는 장면이나, 쿠니무라 준이 도망치면서 눈물을 흘리는 장면 등임. 이것은 예수가 죽은 나사로를 부활시킨 이야기와 겟세마네 동산에서 눈물을 흘렸던 이야기를 반영한 것임. 이 장면들을 통해 사람들은 쿠니무라 준의 정체를 추측하기 어려워하게 됨. 7. 이 영화를 본 사람들은 일반적으로 쿠니무라 준이 악마라고 생각하게 되는데, 이는 2000년 전 예루살렘의 유대인들이 예수를 악마로 본 것과 같은 현상임. 또한 탈무드 역시 예수를 흑마술을 사용한 자로 기록하고 있음. 8. 이외에 일본인의 소지품 중에 일본 여성의 누드 그림이 있는 걸 주인공(경찰)이 발견하면서 변태라고 욕하는 장면이 있는데, 이는 예수가 성적으로 문란했다는 탈무드 기록을 반영한 것임. 난 위와 같이 생각하기 때문에 아직도 유튜브나 기타 사이트에서 '일본인이 악마냐 아니냐'로 토론하는 걸 좀 이상하게 생각하는 편임. 이건 마치 '예수가 정말로 신의 아들이냐 아니냐'로 토론하는 것과 똑같아 보이기 때문임. 예수가 신의 아들인지 아닌지는 알 수 없듯이 그 일본인이 악마인지 아닌지는 알 수가 없음. 그래서 나홍진 감독 스스로도 관객 여러분이 어떻게 생각하든 그것이 정답이라 한 거고. 영화를 보고서 일본인이 악마라고 생각한 사람은 예수에게 돌을 던진 예루살렘의 유대인처럼 생각한 거고, 일본인이 억울하게 탄압 당하는 희생자라고 생각한 사람은 빌라도나 기독교도에 해당하는 것임.

이것도 지극히 개인적인 해석일 뿐인데 스포일러라느니 한국인의 배경지식라느니 운운하는건; 그쪽 해석도 필요없이 복잡하면서도 영화 내 일부의 요소만 고려하고 있음. 예를 들면 가장 중요한 저 마을의 수호신의 의미는? 억지로 성경의 다른 설화들과 엮으려다보니 그렇게 되는 것. 이 영화가 기독교를 모티브로 한 건 나같이 감독이 기독교인인 줄 몰랐던 사람 입장에서도 단번히 알 수 있을 정도로 노골적이었음. 그래서 처음 볼 때는 기독교인들이 포교하는 그 메시지가 느껴져 짜증날 정도. 하지만 그렇다고 감독이 성경에 적힌 내용과 영화의 요소를 일대일 대응시킬 정도로 유치하게 구성하지는 않았음. 영화는 한국 샤머니즘을 소재로 차용했으니 직설적으로 개신교적 스토리를 녹였으리라 생각하면 오산임. 핵심은 “올바른 신앙이란 무엇인가”지 “누가 예수에 해당되냐”가 아님. 영화 내에서 제대로 올바른 말을 다른 군더더기 없이 지속적으로 하는 사람은 무명임. 즉, 주인공이 아무리 혼란스러운 상황에 있었다지만 그의 곁에서는 누군가 여전히 본질을 뚫는 메시지를 들려줬음. 그럼 그것을 따라가야하겠지만 그 믿음의 길이 합리성과 거리가 멀다보니 사람인 이상 철저히 가시밭길이 된다는 메시지를 전할 뿐임. 그래서 기독교에서 “무조건적인 신앙”을 강조하고, 그 메시지는 쉽게 세속적으로 타락하기 때문에 기독교인이 아닌 입장에서 짜증나는 것이기도 하는 것이고. 그 테마 안에서 그 일본인이 누구였는지는 가장 중요한 주제는 아니며, 또 그가 예수였다는 확신을 주기에도 맥락이 완벽한게 아님. 예수를 떠올리게 하는 다양한 에피소드는 성경에서 따온 것일 뿐, 그 일본인이 악마가 된 형상이 우매한 사람들 눈에만 그리 보인다는 설정이라면 대사라도 “올바른” 말을 하고 있었어야함.
