This is one of the first horror movies that had a lasting effect one me (for some time at least). I saw it when I was a teenager and didn't really feel any fear watching it. However, I live in Florida, and we have lightning storms often. That exact night, there was a storm off in the distance on a very clear summer night. All I could see when lying in bed was the lighting flashes but not hear rain or thunder. It freaked me out so bad.

Humans are naturally cooperative as a species and if we just went full blown ape shit on each other any time something major happened then civilization itself literally wouldn't exist. If you want proof of this there's actually studies done on people's behavior during multiple types of disaster events including major terrorist attacks. Most of the time when people hurt each other it's out of mass confusion and panic rather than malicious intent. If humans' first instincts were to fuck each other over at the first sign of danger then we wouldn't have gotten very far as a species.

For a modern updating of the story this is a really good adaptation of the original book. The tripods are impressively intimidating, and that screech still haunts me. This movie made me feel like I did first reading the book. Imagining the breaking down and splintering of society; some groups of humans reduced to herds of animals, some banding together heroically, and others just going insane. The protagonist doesn't travel with his family in the book, but he is trying to get back to his wife. I'm sure the decision to have him travel with his kids made it easier to show the character's worry and desperation onscreen. In the novel the main character links up with small groups of people trying to form resistance cells, which may have been the inspiration to have the son in this film run off to join the army. I only wish they had depicted the clouds of black gas flowing into cities.

@@TommyLellan The story isn’t meant to be horror, but science fiction. The beauty of the story is in it’s simplicity- aliens invade people work together to stop them focus on a couple of people as the focus to stop them. We don’t need to know their backstories, family etc. for other films yes that would be nice, but here for this type of story you only need to focus on the actual fight for survival which is where the 1953 film comes in and is still regarded as a classic. It even made it’s way not only into the Criterion collection, but the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress for being Culturally, Historically, or Aesthetically Significant. We won’t have to worry about that for the remake though.

I prefer the original because it has actual war in it. The hint is in the title, Spielberg. It would’ve been amazing to see armed forces vs the Martians with updated effects, but all we get are a couple helicopters flying over a hill and far away explosions. A wasted opportunity IMHO.

@@jamesmoyner7499 But the original book WAS a horror story. The whole original book was about how humanity falls apart, is fractured, and pretty much everyone who is alive goes insane realizing just how tiny, insignificant, and meaningless their existence is compared to an unrelenting force. I grew up watching the 1953 version, but the 2005 version is FAR closer to the original intent of the book and as far as I'm aware is the best adaptation of the book. The 1953 version is fun, but it is also painfully 1950's where we get scenes of scientists working together to try and stop the evil force and they test out various different ideas and what not. The book is nothing but a downhill onslaught of humanity not standing a chance while following one man's journey in search of his wife (who shows up at the end, just like Robbie did) and all of the horrors he goes through.

So, in the original script, Robbie actually had a bit more dialogue and a few more interactions with his dad. Early on in the movie, after the lightning storm, Robbie originally tried to play it off as an "awesome" experience which was supposed to be a set-up for his character constantly pretending to be in control and always wanting to get into danger. During this scene, his eyes are supposed to have been tearing up as he is talking about how "awesome" it was to see lightning up close, even though he is clearly terrified. I think this was clearly meant to demonstrate that Robbie was a kid pretending to be A LOT bigger and tougher than he really is even though he is truly just lost and confused. This would've made the military scene make more sense because we would have known that Robbie has a history of intentionally acting tougher than his dad just to make his dad look bad. The scene with "Manny the mechanic" getting his car stolen was a little different where Manny actually sees the tripod and refuses to acknowledge that he is about to die, which is why Cruise abandons him to die. Robbie later questions his dad's motives and hints at the idea that "his dad is willing to dispose of anyone who is inconvenient", an obvious attack on the dad abandoning his role as a father. The scene with Robbie leaving to join the military originally had no dialogue in it and it was simply Robbie trying to escape and refusing to speak to his dad, so the whole scene was supposed to be the culmination of a bunch of previous dialogue scenes and possibly the subtext was Robbie choosing to abandon his family in the same way his father abandoned them while trying to take the moral high ground by joining the military. According to the appendix section of the script, it was by the suggestion of a few crew members that Robbie and his Dad should talk during their final confrontation. Having Robbie not talk to his father would have better cemented the rift between the two characters and shown just how far Robbie is willing to go to prove that he is better than his dad and more responsible. The later scene with Tim Robbins I THINK was supposed to be a reflection of Cruise's willingness to kill others to protect his family, but at the same time yet again abandoning/killing people to keep himself safe. All in all, I understand partially why they reduced Robbie's scenes, but I also feel like the biggest part of the movie that everyone criticizes (Robbie's character arc) was not a problem in the screenplay.

No, that's not normal. You likely grew up in a very liberal area where disfunction flourishes.

Kudos to the soldiers who were willing to try and hold back the crowd at the ferry scene; it would've been so easy for one of them to just take a few steps back, you know they was thinking it. I wonder how this would go down in reality.

War of the Worlds is such a significant piece of history for various reasons as it was among the first, if not THE first alien invasion story.

my Google feed recently has presented stories by supposed critics who criticize the ending of War of the Worlds as being flat and a let down.. it really cracks me up since it is apparent that they don't understand the history of previous versions.. that's how the story goes.. it's not like you can just change it! great flick!

I saw this movie back in 2005 on my DVD player. I gave it a 8. The narrator's voice was Morgan Freeman.

I couldn't agree more!!! It's an awesome movie and Tom Cruise is excellent and also the alien ships are super cool!!! 😍 I could watch this over and over again!!! Do Chicken Little since that one has aliens too!!!

So the aliens all died because of all the viruses and sickness on earth their bodies couldn’t take it☺️ this movie is so good but I’m still terrified of it 15 years later!

Yes kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZqTVlKmOhJqrpJo may I ask what name of the movie in video opinion
@MatthewMcLain122 жыл бұрын
THIS is the reaction I was waiting for most from reactors. You are, for the most part (maybe one or two) the first ever person on KZbin to react to this specific War of the Worlds movies. Now, there are many other versions of this type of movie, which I hope you react to, although the 1988 long form series, I’m not expecting anyone to react to as that is an ordeal to get through, but the one set in the 1800s, the BBC miniseries and the 1953 versions I want reactions to at some point. The Asylum version from this same year is terrible so that doesn’t matter to me. Also, the Alien Conquest movie made recently is also a remake which I think you and all other reactors should react to, as my favorite genre of movie is Disaster type movies!!!

Hello there, Nick! I’m so glad you decided to watch this movie! I remember watching it for the first time with my dad. I recommend you to watch next Cellular (2004) with Chris Evans, Kim Basinger and Jason Statham. Take care, Nick and see you in your next reaction
@davidbarnes11132 жыл бұрын
Great reaction! You should watch the original version too, although it’s not as intense or well made, but that’s to be expected from a movie made in the 60’s. Dakota Fanning killed it in this movie for her to be so young at the time, she grew up to be an amazing young actress. She’s so good in The Alienist from TNT .

Movie Recommendations: Spontaneous The Lovely Bones (I'm warning you now, there's a lot of heavy subject matter in this one, don't watch it unless you're in the right emotional mindset beforehand.) Though this being a remake of the movie from the 50th they made the book into a radio play before that and people freaked out because they thought that aliens were attacking for real. :|
