Big fan of these experiments with Speedpaints. Can't wait to see more content like this
@MattEvans5292 жыл бұрын
I'd wager that since the Speed Paints are meant to be put on a white primer, that Holy White color didn't pop right because it had no white to work with from the primer. Turned out fantastic, btw!
@WatchItPaintIt2 жыл бұрын
I think you hit the nail on the head! My bad! But yeah loved how it accidentally worked perfect for me :-D
@MightyEmperor2 жыл бұрын
That was my thought while watching it. It looks like the "white" paint is actually very light grey and is designed to pull away hard from edges giving virtually no tint to the white undercoat (which provides the actual edge highlights) and it then pools in the recesses to give a bit of contrast to the areas where the white undercoat is showing through (with a bit of a grade between high and low tones).
@VincentKraven Жыл бұрын
Really late on this comment, but for anyone who sees it, the lack of contrast on the Holy White paint is because of the grey colored primer. The speed paint pulls away from the raised edges, revealing the primer color. When that primer is white, it reveals white, and shades the recesses grey. With a grey primer, it reveals grey....and then shades the recesses grey.
@PetersonZF Жыл бұрын
I always dilute Holy White with medium, otherwise it's still grey, even with white primer.

I wonder if you need a really bright white primer under the "Holy White" to get that bright white edge highlight? The edges of the stonework after painting with Holy White don't look much different from the primer color.
@migol_net2 жыл бұрын
Yes you do
@shutupbear2 жыл бұрын
Yeah speed painter says that you are supposed to prime with white not grey. So over white the holy white speed paint should leave the primer color on the high areas and then fade to grey in the recesses.
@ml61582 жыл бұрын
Probably the same as Apothecary white, even over corax white it doesn't really work.
@JohnCarr2 жыл бұрын
I wonder how that will look over a zenithal prime then
@sethpeterson82612 жыл бұрын
Should be as simple as dry brushing or painting in your bright white highlight before you paint Holy White over it. Really no different than under highlighting a glaze layer, wash layer , ink layer contrast layer etc... Personally, I think it looked just right. Very light grey, with just a shade darker in the recesses, but still very noticeable contrast/shading as compared to painting that with a normal paint..

@@13Robzilla and do you get that spotty finish with the rattle cans? which colors do you use as base undercoat and zenithal? I don't really like how black undercoat with rattle can works with contrast for what I've seen (looks great with air brush, tho), it may be look OK on futuristic minis, but looks too gritty and dirty for fantasy. I was wondering if anyone tried to use the specific contrast wraithbone spray as zenithal and some other dark neutral/warm as base undercoat instead of black. I also wonder if rattle cans using fine diffuser help to avoid dotty transitions between light and shadows.

@WatchItPaintIt2 жыл бұрын
I have had the occasional issue. But I’m learning to just dodge the problem in various ways. Dry brushing seems to have less of a problem, very quick layering is okay. I’m careful what order I paint and how wet the paint is I apply on top of Speedpaints. I have to varnish something’s but I can mostly avoid it or use the reactivation to my advantage

hey ho and nerdy greetings! I've been following your speedpaint videos all the time because I really want to get the paints when they come out here in Germany! *.* since you seem to have all sorts of colors from army painter with you and like to experiment, i have a test suggestion for you (this is how i would like to paint my figures :P): 1st step: a zenithal undercoat with medium gray light gray and white 2nd step: exclusively speedpaints for painting (except the metal parts) 3. dip the painted figure in the quickshades (strong or darktone) again and remove the excess "dip" with a brush. I'd be happy if you could do a test like this. because in Germany the colors won't be available until the end of March and I can't test T.T. myself until then cheers, fraenky
@elbitxo59452 жыл бұрын
hey! for what you can see at Pete The Wargamer's latest video, Speedpaints tend to desaturate a lot when washed with quicksade or similar (he uses Agrax, but it will be the same with Strong Tone). Considering either contrast or speedpaints give a glossy finish, and quicksade even glossier, you will have to use some matt barnish, that will take a little bit of saturation as well. I'd look for an alternative, or not using quicksade at all, I mean, if your color scheme is good and make decent use of color theory, you shouldn't need that wash at all and you will end with brighter miniatures. Medium or dark gray undercoat + zenithal white should be enough also, most people use black + white zenithal anywats, I think you wouldn't notice any difference using two different grays and will end up taking detail from the miniature. Hope it helps!

I've heard people say not to use your good brush with contrast paints. How did you find using the speed paints with the good red grass brush ?.:)
@WatchItPaintIt2 жыл бұрын
Not gonna lie, my RGG brushes are ruined and I bet it’s because of contrast. Having said that I still use them for almost EVERYTHING, like contrast or not (and I even have brand new sets but I keep using my wrecked ones…). I won’t say they give me perfect results? But maybe judge for yourself check out anything I’ve painted in the last year all this brushes! Also, I think they are the best brushes I’ve used for contrast paints so far too… I tried cheap ones, small ones, big ones, these just seem great for this job. I expect there’s cheaper great choices but I’m not gonna bother finding them!
@elbitxo59452 жыл бұрын
Amazing result for such a quick job. There aren't much tests layering over the speedpaints yet, Is it true you have to barnish before applying regular paints to avoid reactivation? Doesn't look like you had that issue. I've seen it happening with red, IDK if it's a problem that specific color or the paints itself, but would be nice to have some tests regarding that issue before the mega set is released. Thanks for sharing these videos!

You can, though if you have an airbrush that's likely the best way to apply it. It works best over textured plastic surfaces, or ones with lots of nooks & crannies (fur, wood, guns, clothes with ripples/folds, etc). On flat surfaces, it can look splotchy, unless you spray it on with an airbrush.
