I feel like a even stronger technique with these might be to do a base coat with a very light color compared to what you'd like and follow up with a single coat of this. I wonder if a bright light yellow followed by the green you dont care for would yeild good results.

First of all, thank you for your videos about Speedpaints! Your "experiments" with tthem are the beest to know if they really interest me. One interesting experiment I would love to see is about how they work with regulars paints; for example, white primer, red speedpaint and then some highlights with regular paints... how could they look? Seeing your videos, I think they will work well to add a first layer of shadows and base coat to work from.

Thanks for your kind words fella! That’s a good suggestion! I’ve not tried going the extra mile with painting proper highlights yet! I do have a video in the make for painting a really good miniature properly! So I’m intending to paint that up to the best of my ability while still saving some time with speedpaints. Hopefully that one will tick the box for this experiment

IT looks like two fash coats into a light drybrushing is going to make this paint the ultimate king of army painting for newcomers and even some veterans who like to detail with edging more than drybrushing. I can see a thousand different ways of using that orangey yellow in a Tau army with stippling. Very excited for this paint!

I really enjoy these experiments that you've done with this line of paints and it's made me want to purchase these items so that I can start getting into painting my minis. I am curious about the ability to mix colors together to get a new subset of colors. How well do these mix together with each other to create those different colors?

Thanks Jack, appreciate the kind words! This is a good question. And one I want to look at in the near future too. Hopefully you’ll see a video pop up in the not too distance future.

Its probably too soon to tell, but do the speedpaints do a similar job of destroying brushes like the contras paints?

Two layers of that yellow make a good fire/torch effect

Love these experiments, they really show case what is and isn't possible with these paints. Some of the lighter colors might benefit from two layers (and/or mixing with the medium) if they are "too bright" for the overall model, or to create some "natural" differences in tones (like slightly different skin tones). Pre-ordered the mega set and can't wait to get started with them.

@Bluecho42 жыл бұрын
Definitely agree that while 2 coats has some utility in deepening the saturation, 3 coats adds basically nothing but huge pool stains. Moreover, 2 coats knocks down the contrast in places, which in practice might necessitate applying a drybrush or manual highlight. You really need to _want_ that deeper color. Flat areas with minimal detail seem to benefit the most from 2 coats. Otherwise, it just pools to black and becomes really noticeable.
@PetroTiger20042 жыл бұрын
I understand not liking certain colors, and I admit the green doesn’t have great contrast to it even in one layer, but I’m personally excited for this green color. My husband is a huge green lantern fan and this green goes on so smoothly and it is just the right shade, so I see myself painting with it a lot 😆

Army Painter better be giving you a promo code to link to so you get a commission for all these experiments, or at least gave you a check along with the paint they sent you! I already planned on buying the line but these experiments have sealed the deal. Like the idea of Contrast but hate how the line goes from pigment-water to solid color that hides detail. Bought the entire range and have maybe 5-6 that are regular use with the rest being dust collectors. Thank you for your work with these!
@WatchItPaintIt2 жыл бұрын
Haha, no commission or cheque I'm afraid! Just the paints for free. We kind of like it that way, feel a little less swayed? Reviewers try to remain unbiased (I hope at least) but I bet it gets even harder with a wad of cash in your hand :-D It's specifically why we're trying to just show what these things do and put it on you guys to decide if you like it - it's a bit of a cop out, but its dangerous to just tell you they are amazing when we didn't pay our hard earned money :-D Thanks for the comment man, appreciate your time!

Can't wait to get these, seems like a good way to quickly paint some board games when you don't have the time to do a normal paint, and much cheaper than paying for a sundrop or equivalent. Curious how these would work over colored primer say red, blue, green, etc. or over the straight mini with no primer at all, example some games they are already their faction color so just adding the speed paint over it.
@MorboTheLeprechaun2 жыл бұрын
Did you notice any issues with reactivation when applying additional coats? I know some other people have had issues with the speedpaints reactivating when they've applied additional coats (both of Speedpaint and regular paint) - I wonder if that might have been some of the issue with the additional layers simply ruining the contrast and muddying the detail. Perhaps a test where you apply a coat of Matt varnish between coats to see if that makes a difference?
@NumberOneGeek2 жыл бұрын
Looking forward to my mega set in Feb. I guess the next test is mixing the paints, do you use an empty bottle to mix or on the pallette? Can you make a green you like?
@AlaricCantonain2 жыл бұрын
Cool test you made, and it seems that reactivation wasn’t a problem. It would be interesting to see the difference between 1 coat, 2 coats of 50% diluted with medium, and 3 coats diluted at 67%.
@radicaledgephotography2 жыл бұрын
Reactivation only happens with water - these don't have any. Even undiluted warpaint shouldn't reactivate, just DON'T ADD WATER (like Gremlins!)

Here is a stupid request from me: Can you show a few of those paints over black or dark grey? Reason for asking: When using the zenithal priming aproach with contrast paints I just can't stand how contrast paints look on the black parts. It totally stopped me from using them even on stuff that doesnt need to look great up close. It's this "dried slime" like texture that contrast paints leave behind.

Cracks me up that you hate that green. I think it's great, a bit like Contrast Warp Lightning but... better? Looks like a good match for 90's GW greenskins. Plus could just use one of the darker green Speed Paint colors if you hate this one (or mix a coupe together etc...)

From other tests I've seen, multiple coats works great on flat surfaces. I think these models in particular just don't take multiple coats of this paint very well.

Same reason I didn’t even know bleeding was a thing for so long! Either it’s hard to notice? Doesn’t always happen? Or isn’t as big a deal all the time! In this case I think it’s because the bleeding doesn’t happen as much on purple and that’s what colour I happened to use :( if I did red we might have seen it.
