Then later, Monique and Naveen recorded a full two play game, back on the channel here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qaKVmXZqmrWVirc

I have been tempted by this game for a couple of years now, so when a playthrough video by Monique and Naveen, I was thrilled and hit play. That was where I learned about this video, so I stopped that video and just invested 6 hours and 15 minutes of my life into this experience. Thank you! Next step is to click on the pinned link and see the follow up to this before returning to M&N's playthrough now that I have a basic underatanding! Again, thank you for doing this and opening this world for me!

Can't blame you for stopping when you did, but would have liked to have seen you both muddle through a few further turns! Just seems a shame to have not reached an end to the game, or at least try a few actions of your own. Any chance of a follow up video continuing from the end point in the play book? This is one of the few games I can see Table Top Simulator working for it. Most games you need to be a bit more careful about placing things on the board which is just much harder than it needs to be in that interface, but the coin games usually have you just dropping tokens etc in to big enough areas
@WatchItPlayed
@WatchItPlayed 3 жыл бұрын
@@ishoottheyscore8970 I did end up going on to finish that game solo, and have now played 5 more times (and have become quite obsessed with this system... now learning and playing 3 other COIN games... with others on the shelf to be played as well). I do hope to return to this game in some form on the channel, as I think I can teach it more succinctly, but it's a big undertaking, so I have to figure out when/how I can fit it in.
@ishoottheyscore8970
@ishoottheyscore8970 3 жыл бұрын
@@WatchItPlayed Which ones are you playing, and what ones do you have on the shelf? I love the depth you get out of the game despite a fairly simple turn structure (1st player to act picks an action which sets what the 2nd player can do), but would love to see a more succinct way to teach them. I get the play books helping to highlight what all the options are like for each player (letting them see their own and their opponents actions) as it's not always obvious how valuable different actions are, so not sure how to teach them in a different way. Maybe there'll be a way of teaching that gets the Brothers Murph to play it... :-)

@@ishoottheyscore8970 Currently playing: A Distant Plain, Andean Abyss and Colonial Twilight. On my shelf: all the other ones currently available (except for All Bridges Burning and Pendragon... which I ordered and are on the way). I've fallen HARD for this system. It's been great. And yes, I think the game (especially Cuba Libre) is more approachable than the way the rule books present the game.

@@WatchItPlayed I don't think it particularly fits your channel, but I'd love to see someone do a video talking about the events in Andean Abyss compared to Narcos, such as whether there are event cards that deal with the corruption in the government, or disputes between the Cali and Medellin cartels. Thanks for this stream it was much fun to see you both go through the pain of reading a COIN game rulebook. I always found these games interesting and I read plenty of rulebooks but there’s something about these games that trick me up, but I would assume having open information would help with teaching COIN games. The COIN game I’ve always be interested in is Liberty Or Death The American Insurrection, I love the theme of that game and I think the board art is fantastic! However, when I was struggling to just read that rulebook my brain melted. Now as I watch you two read through this rulebook I can see how helpful it is to have just one more person to read the rulebook with: They can correct you on any misunderstandings of the rules you have and you can correct them on their misunderstandings as you learn the game together.

While it is nice to get the polished rules from your regular videos, this learning stream, even being quite raw, was something special. I'd be very keen to watch more of these. I really like how this was raw and uncut. This is a reality check to anyone opening up that COIN box that’s been taunting them on their shelf and thinking they’ll just “have a go at it real quick” on a lunch break. I’ve been there and walked away ashamed and defeated. But watching two experienced gamers trudge through these rules bit by bit and observing their thought process is extremely validating. It shows that games look intimidating aren’t so bad, but do take a considerable investment of time and attention to wrap your mind around. I think there’s a part of me that always imagines that others just breezed through the rules in 20 minutes and were up and playing in no time and I must just be dense. Seeing the learning happen in real time is helpful.

Hi Rodney! Long-time lurker and enjoyer of your fantastic tutorials. Really been enjoying all the new additions to the team over the last year too! It's been a fun mix of discovering new people (like Paula) and seeing familiar faces join the fold (like the Before You Play team). Thrilled to see you dabble in the solo side of board games a bit lately (my usual niche), like with Paula's gameplay and with this behemoth! Never heard of the COIN series before, and this video inspired me to take the plunge and explore it. I ended up starting with Andean Abyss rather than Cuba Libre due to a stronger connection to the theme. It's been a ton of fun, very enjoyable solo. I also discovered a lack of quality mods on TTS for a lot of the COIN series (TTS is my main method of gaming with my group these days), so I set about to change that. I've spent the past week or so perfecting a highly-scripted version of Andean Abyss (steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2476169802), and will probably move on to Cuba Libre next, and we'll see where it goes from there. Just wanted to tip my hat to you, say thanks for another solid recommendation, and offer up the services of my mod if it is useful to you or any others who stumble upon it. Cheers!

Didn't know you could attack with guerillas that were already active and I always wondered during a Rally what would stop you from adding a base where you just rallied new troops, and now I know you can't because you would be doing two Ops in the same space.

It's an interesting why to learn play. We just handed out the play sheets and started to play after just skim reading the rules. There where 4 of us and it was fire in the sky, payed me year. Then started again.

Why am I watching this? I am not interested in playing COIN games... I enjoy a Rum and Coke also known as a "Cuba Libre" but not enough to try and theme a whole day around that drink... I guess I must really enjoy Matthew and Rodney?

Coming to this after the fact, I'll say I feel more intimidated about learning COIN games based solely on the length of this video. 6+ hours just to learn it? Tempted to skip to the end and see if you were successful. Rodney, would you ever forgive me if I did?

@@paulhamrick3943 I disagree. COIN games are not nearly as dry as most eurogames - in fact, they are full of theme. Nor are they detailed simulations in the same way as more complex wargames. I would characterise COIN games as a great blend of eurogame and wargames mechanics with a rich historical (or contemporary) theme.
@janoshunyadi2
@janoshunyadi2 4 жыл бұрын
@@paulhamrick3943 That's a different topic, but I don't agree with you on that either. The general rules for Cuba Libre are of comparable complexity to a heavy eurogame. There are also the four sets of faction-specific rules, which adds to the length of the rulebook and (arguably) the overall complexity of the game. But no more so than some heavy euros with asymmetrical factions such as Gaia Project. The gameplay, on the other hand, may be more involving because there are more player options and more interactions than in most heavy euros. I do agree that separate scoring tracks would be very useful.

@@paulhamrick3943 I'm wondering on what basis you think the rules of Cuba Libre are more complex than heavy euros? If it's because you struggled to learn Cuba Libre - I struggled to learn COIN games too. But I think that's not because of any inherent complexity, but because they are so different to other games I know. I can pick up the rules, and learn to competently play, most heavy euros very quickly because I'm already familiar with the mechanics and types interactions from many dozens of other heavy eurogames. I find Vital Lacerda's games significantly more difficult to learn than other heavy euros - again, I think that's because they are so different to other games. The rules of e.g. Lisboa or On Mars are not difficult, and playing a player turn is simple. What is difficult is figuring out how your actions/choices interact with each other and with those of other players. COIN games feel similar to me in this respect.

It's basically "do thing." "Thing done" dictates next player's options Every "thing done" somehow indirectly/directly messes with someone else. There's also the part where you argue over the esoteric nature of the word "is" for about an hour. COIN™ To me, the hardest part about learning COIN games is the format in which actions / rules are written. They're worth it though, and the solitaire play is second to none. Especially in more recent titles like Pendragon.
