I SAVED Over $500 By Completely REBUILDING The XUV Tailgate Latches

The 2004 GMC Envoy XUV repairs continue! I bought a very broken XUV with all the common failures and we're working through rebuilding everything. After fixing the midgate it's time to tackle the 2-way tailgate, then move on to the hardest part, the sliding roof. The tailgate has 3 electric latches, all of them are different, and all of them are expensive. We're gonna tear them apart, clean them up, and try to get them working properly again. With only 27,200 ever made and probably half of those crushed by this point, parts are scarce.

Yay....yours is the first video I have seen that shows how to fix some of the issues with my beast. I purchased my 2004 XUV a couple of years ago and unfortunately, I do not have a manual for it. Thankfully, everything was operational with respect to the retractable roof, midgate and tailgate except for being able to open the tailgate downward (although the touch actuator itself works). From your video, I can now determine that it is indeed, the right hand side latch that is the problem as it does not engage when lowering and therefore the tailgate is not attached to that side! I will now try and see if I can clean it to attempt to get it to engage and if not, perhaps try and remove it and fix it as you have done although I am not confident in my skills to do so. I appreciate the information and will see what I can do. I look forward to more videos in the future.

My technique here would have been to keep the latches assembled. Soak each latch in a pan of rubbing alcohol overnight. Blow air and flush out the alcohol. Now SPRAY soak each latch with DeOxIt. Then follow up with a spray flush of CRC silicone spray. I've had great success with many latches, window motors and regulators, and even dash stepper motors.

The top works in conjunction with the rear window limit switch - i.e., it knows when the back window is down before it will open. Also, when the rear window is closed and you activate the swing out rear door the window drops about an inch before it releases the door and closes back when shut.

Good fix on the latches. I had to do the same on the sliding door of our KIA Sedona. They wanted way too much (I thought) for a replacement latch so I took apart the old one, cleaned and lubed it like you did yours and it has been working fine now for about a year and a half so far.

JR.. a friend bought a 65 Tbird Retractable.. the top was stuck closed but one of the cast aluminim arms was broken from somebody trying to get it to move.. the entire top had to be taken apart.. the arm crack ground out and rewelded . because the car sat with the top apart outside during this time the relays all filled with water.. the connectors all filled with water.. the limit switches all filled with water. had to take all the motors apart.. had a heck of a time finding all the relays.. they are special.. finally gave up and found some Thomas and Betts connectors that were just the right shape to plug into the molded rubber relay harness connectors.. wires up 12 volt double pole double throw relays that plugged into a big screw base.. but had to go in and replace the braided cables for thicker as they could not handle the motor power.. ran some 70 amp relays off those double pole double throw relays to control the hydraulic pump and its solenoids.. 1 pump.. 4 cylinders 2 or 4 solenoids.. its been a long time.. folding flap motors.. screw down motors.. all the limit switches finally got it to work flawlessly.. the car owner who was also a restorer but not as deep into repairs as i was.. apparently was so amazed that he ran the top back and forth watching it till it overheated the pump and burned up the commutator.. took that out.. he finally found a motor shop to rewind the armature motor and put a new commutator.. he had placed the pump parts in a 5 gallon bucket on his porch .. i had snapped a lid on it.. apparently he took the lid off looking for something.. left it off.. when the armature was ready.. the entire pump was found soaking in water and ruined.. so i got another normal 2 port 3 wire convertible top pump.. its had a lot smaller displacement.. then had to go thru all the switches again.. as the top was deck cover was left vertical and the top frame was left vertical.. hint.. when doing convertible top stuff.. have a proper size inverted flair union and 2 inverted flare plugs.. you can take one hose off the pump.. screw a union with 1 plug onto the open hose fitting and the other inverted flare plug into the side of the motor.. then take the other hose off the pump.. screw a plug in the motor and a the union with a plug in the other hose fitting.. if you need to move the top.. guess what.. use the union to connect both hoses together.. now your top can be manually operated.. same procedure for the cylinder hoses.. 2 inverted flare plugs and a union for each one. you don't loose but a tea spoon of fluid. the system stays full and bleeding the system is crazy easy. just thought i would share my frustration at limit switches and relays..

Looking at the condition of that rear glass when you raised it, I'd suggest that stripping the whole tailgate down and thoroughly cleaning up everything inside it is going to be a very good idea. All that fine dust that you get from living on a dirt road will turn into a very effective glue when combined with the assembly grease put on components when they're built, and that can very easily gum up things like window regulators and stop them working, which, on a complex set up like this, can easily stop the whole thing from working. I can't imagine replacing the tailgate window regulator is a cheap or pleasant job, and it's working at the moment, so cleaning it all up and then re-lubricating it now will be insurance against a future failure. Plus, all the dust that will have no doubt collected in the bottom of the tailgate will make a very good water trap when the window seals get tired and start letting water by, and that's a guarantee that the bottom of the tailgate will rot out...

I bought a new 2004 Envoy in 2004, the XUV, leather, loaded, Bose sound system, 6 air bags, etc. it’s window sticker was $42,400, I paid $26,150 out the door! Its still my daily driver in 2023, it’s a wonderful vehicle, I’ll keep it forever, keep it in good shape, its low production number might make a collector some day. It’s often expensive and tricky when something brakes, tho. How did I get newly half off a brand new untitled GMC, keep reading, you can do the same. I drove across 3 states to see and drive the Envoy XUV. I first asked the dealer for $2000 off as he drove it a few months with his dog in it,, it was covered in white hair that I am allergic too. He agreed and also I asked for and got running board, a deep detail and oil. change. Then I hit him with my $6000 of GM points that I amassed toward my down pmt. Plus using the GM HQ deal $7.5K off. Dealer said they paid more for it from GM then my deal to buy it and dealer tried to cancel my purchase but they called the GM HQ who made them honor the deal(s). GM HQ made dealer give me $750 off for being a 1st time buyer. I picked the XUV as it could also help with farm work, the sliding roof and washable, (3rd seat area), is perfect for hay, grain and bedding plants, plus it had a class 3 hitch. I am now almost ready for a new GM vehicle, with points more saved and w/ GM’s future hefty discounts. The auto industry is in a really bad place now and only will get worse, the deep discounts by end of next year will probably the best. So if you need a new GM car or truck in the future and can’t pay sticker prices, amass points on a GM cc. I pay my mortgage on it. Dealer demo is the most discounted new vehicle on any GM lot, mine had 1400 miles on it. Find out all the discounts from GM HQ before you buy, the dealer won’t tell you, like the 1st time buyer discount!

I know this video is really old but I just bought one of these and the roof works fine The mid-gate window works fine The rear tailgate window worked fine up until I went through the procedure of disassembling and cleaning and re-greasing the latches because they weren't releasing and opening. I got them working just great I now can open it to the right or open it down and it latches and everything's fantastic but now the tailgate window will not go up whether I use the key or the key fob or the button on the ceiling. One thing I noticed is there's some limit switches in those tailgate latches it looks like there was three of them two on one and one on the other and the two were broken and missing and the single switch was intact but when I was putting it back together I broke the little plunger part off but I put it back in the rubber boot and it seems like it should be working. I don't know if that's what's causing my window to not go up anymore. Does the module look to see if the latches are latched closed before it will put power to the window? If so is there a way for me to hotwire the two wires going to the broken limit switch so that the computer just always thinks the tailgate is latched thus allowing me to put the window up and down all the time and anytime?

I'm trying to figure out why GM needed a computer to make the damned thing work! Ford started with the 3 way "Magic Gate" in 1966. They used it through 91 on their full sized wagons for all that time, plus on the mid-sized wagons from 72-77. GM used the same 3 way gate from 67-70 and again from 77 through 90 on their full sized wagons and from 68-72 on their mud sized wagons. Chrysler used the same idea from 69-78 on their mid- and full sized wagons. They all worked great, and not one of them needed a single computer to work well and safely. Simple basic maintenance kept them working a treat.

Unfortunately I can't get mine off the tailgate. All the bolts refuse to loosen even with pb blaster and a spray to loosen the bolt...I forget the name. So sprayed the heck out of the 2 side latches and banged on the side where the bolts are. Worked enough to finally close the door. Not good enough to keep using it but enough to stop straping the door closed and finally use the window again.

This thing is one of those vehicles that will make you question how much your time is valued. With GM, thankfully most of what they build CAN be rebuilt but it's a question of assumption of time and work needed. I remember my grandpa used to say that mechanics aren't mechanics anymore...they're just replacement specialists. A mechanic who would rather take something apart and rebuilt it instead of forcing the customer to spend hundreds buying a replacement is a dying breed. For example...I had a 03 Grand Cherokee with the dreaded death wobble. I was quoted almost 900 dollars to have every bushing replaced in the front suspension because they wanted to order new track bars, ball joints, cv joints and so on. After some digging and asking on several forums I made friends with a bunch of Jeep people who helped me not only replace all of the front suspension bits but UPGRADE them for less than 200 bucks. Yes...it took me a full weekend to do because I wasn't experienced, and I had to borrow a lot of tools to do it...but it was well worth fixing the problem and making it better than dealing with a dealer who'd rather me drive away in a new Wrangler or shaft me for 900 bucks if I don't want to trade it.

Here's an idea. Since most of us who watch your channel might not have the resources to own an Autel scanner. Why not have a contest and give one away. I enjoy the fact that you're not afraid to take the small stuff apart. Like the maintenance manager in my plant said,"Hell. It's already broken. Let's find out why it broke.

Hey jr... thanks for the video. Do u have time to give any input on the actual open latch parts? Did u by chance photo anything up close?

Use wurth hhs-k, you'll never go back - I use it on every latch, convertible top, etc. It will even temporarily quiet suspension joints

I had a 1971 Chevy wagon with a disappearing tailgate. The glass went into the roof and the tailgate went into the floor. It was a great idea. Easy access.
