I FAILED At Replacing My Audi A6 Window Regulator *It's Not Meant To Be Repaired!*

My 2011 Audi A6 is at the finish line. There was one little piece of the puzzle I didn't need to fix, but Diamond Auto Parts shipped me the part so it was decided that I had to. As I started taking the door apart I realized this was possibly the worst regulator job of all time, the entire window frame has to be unbolted and removed, then all the seals have to be ruined just to remove the regulator. Once I got the door apart disaster really struck, come along for the ride, it's a wild one.

BMW had multiple generations of window regulators with the same failure (tabs breaking off) but were made out of pot metal, so it's not a plastic issue. Someone probably abused the window on that one to cause it to fail, they don't typically go bad that easily on the C6's, from what I know of.

They've been pretty good lately actually. Their Gen 3 EA888 2.0T fixes oil burning problems and has proven to be pretty reliable (as far as we know) and this 3.0T Supercharged V6 is pretty bullet proof. They use minimal plastic around high stress areas in the engine (Unlike BMW that uses plastic cooling everywhere) 2013 they got better by fixing the timing chain tensioner in the Gen 2 2.0T but it still had crappy oil control rings until Gen 3. BMW's engine has proven reliable enough that Toyota is using it (though Toyota had to tell BMW to change some parts to pass their stress testing). Are Toyotas and some other cars reliable? Of course. Do they look as good and are as fun and comfortable as a BMW/Audi. No. Some car guys will put up with the inherit more problems in German cars, though I can say for a fact they are much more reliable than they were in the 2000s - 2012s.

I've seen plenty of regulators that are specific to DF, PF, DR,PR. In fact, I've never replaced a regulator that wasent side specific. The guide rail slot on the molded plastic has to be facing a certain direction based on left to right, like a mirrored image. They are always going to face the wrong way if you tried to switch sides. Could be wrong, but I've done quite a few on various makes and models. Never had to remove 1/2 the door frame but with an import I would just assume something dumb would be discovered. The lack of glue and plastic leads me to believe they achieved a water tight seal with that methodology without requiring that stupid tar tack plastic that never goes on again. Bonus points for not needing specialized glue to remount the glass to the regulator. I cannot begin to tell you how often that stuff fails and the glass falls out of the mounting brackets made of plastic. This can either cost you a new glass panel when it shatters or another hour of booktime to rip it open again that you can't charge a customer for.

You should turn the torque of your impact driver down when taking off tiny screws or working around painted surfaces. Also, using two hands guides the tool prevents it from slipping and bouncing around. You def put a bite on the face of those screws, at least a couple of em. You want just enough torque to break the screw or bolt free. Always set an impact driver to 1 and let em free spin first, then click off till your at a setting to break them free. That will keep your customers bolts, screws, and paint flawless, even if they don't see it.

Same basic design as my A3 (except for the non-reusable insulation--that sucks). Once you do one, it's really a great design and makes changing a regulator way easier than trying to stuff both your hands into the door cavity! Everything comes with tradeoffs, though... One tip, make sure the door frame goes back on and closes against the car in the same spot it did before. There are adjusters inside two of the holes where the large torx bolts go and you have to adjust the frame front to back to get the door to seal. I missed this step and ended up with water on my floorboard. Had to take it all apart to do it again, but now that I know, it's a pretty easy job.

I admire how you don't get annoyed and can laugh at these things. I know I'd get it done but when I run into time consuming hiccups like window frame removal and the wrong parts, I die inside lol

If the C6-A6 is anything like the B6-A4, you don't need to pull the entire door seal off, just pop it off the window/door frame. Guess I'll find out soon, doing the '06 A6 Avant right rear regulator.

BREAKING HEADLINE NEWS: Small plastic tab on ten year old AUDI A window regulator breaks. Requires entire regulator replacement! Why not make simple, elegant designs with a minimum of quality plastic parts? That's not the Audi way! Realistically, how often was the left rear window operated in this car? There are NYC taxis with 250,000 miles on them and the power windows haven't ever been broken!

I've been a car guy' since the 1970's....this whole thing surprises me not in the slightest......like the Mopar 1500 pickups with the designed to fail air blend door actuators. They ALL FAIL at just after the warranty is up and its an 8 book hour job + parts to fix at the dealer.....it was so bad that several of the LARGE dealers had 2 guys who alternated, weekly, doin nothing but these air blend door repairs. The BOOK calls for removal of the whole dash assy to do the job and the guys who do these a lot can get the whole job done in about 35-40 minutes without any problem. The Audi people KNOW this is an issue.....on purpose, but it really does take the 8 hours(or whatever it is) they charge

I gotta a 2001 Lexus GS and it has nun of the issues my Audi got and my Audi has way less miles and is a newer vehicle smh🤦‍♂️… I will never buy another VW/Audi vehicle there expensive money pits… didn’t even have 1/3 of the issues in my 08 E63 AMG Benz as I have with this Audi junk…

Hi JR. I’ve been watching some of these videos it’s been awhile since I’ve been on here on your channel as a subscriber. I’ve got a question for you. Do you have any plans on resurrecting the project Rolls Smoke 💨????? The last I remember was planning on a rear suspension built from scratch to install a Ford 9inch to complete the car. That’s the main reason why I subscribed to your channel way back when. You have a nice shop now with tools and lifts. Mr John Ross will you resurrect the long waited project Rolls Smoke 💨 to life. ??? Take a poll reading from your viewers for your feedback. Hope you have a Blessed One Sir. Eddie Patterson Greetings from Silverstreet South Carolina.

I’m on my 3rd Audi and only ever had one regulator go thankfully. My old boss has an A6 also and lost count on the amount of times he’s had to replace them.

That door teardown pretty much reaffirms why I will NEVER own one. Unnecessarily complicated design. Audi's are as sexy as a supermodel, but just as costly to maintain.

Wow, I’m no mechanic and I’ve replaced the window regulator on a Chrysler minivan twice, about 30 minutes without KZbin videos. Dealership replaced once, so crappy engineering, but easy to replace.

I've replaced 3 of my regulators on my 01 e320. Both back and the right front. The back are held on by 4 rivets and the front has 8. I thought that was bad. I wouldn't even try that on an Audi. Oh ya, I wouldn't even buy an Audi. Lol

In most cases, the window regulators are fine. The felt like material, which the window slides up and down in in the window frame, just needs greasing to ease the movement. However, if that doesn't work the the regulator is faulty like in this video.

Do you think the manufacturers maybe design certain parts to fail? Is that conspiracy thinking? Usually the parts that fail are the least accessible. Some have said that the real money in selling new vehicles, will be the parts that fail and usually dealer priority to fix. KaChing.......!

Remember when we thought German engineers were brilliant? They have almost made these cars (Mercedes, Audi and BMW) worthless as used vehicles, since so much labor is required to fix anything. Also, that regulator design is crap, since the plastic parts are so flimsy, and prone to failure with not that much age.
