I was privileged to read this when it was first published in installments, and have loved it passionately ever since, your analysis always brings new insights and plenty of food for thought, and reminds me of the thrill of anticipation I felt as the story progressed, great work guys.

How anyone can see Rorschach as anything other than damaged is beyond me. It's a well done but sad, disturbing deconstruction of the vigilante superhero.

The hacksaw vs. handcuff vs. death by fire gimmick reads like a swipe from the ending of "Mad Max" (1979), even in tone of avenger Mel Gibson's uncommunicative, unswayably cold delivery of rough justice and the psychopathic criminal's mad scramble of dialogue unconvincingly insisting, "Hey, man, this... this isn't what it looks like...!" Perhaps the Australian film was still regarded as safely obscure enough to borrow from in 1986? Has Moore ever acknowledged this movie scene as an influence? In the postscript material, the scrawled quality of the Freudian dream doodle is dubious for "age 13", its lettering more expected of a child half as young. The accompanying text describes his mother choking on something having the consistency of "raw dough" followed by an appendage being stuffed down her throat: this synesthetic jumbling of tactile impressions suggests a blurred first-hand familiarity, as if Walter had been victimized as a toddler by one of his mother's home clients, not quite remembered... Refer back to the food-splattered scowl of Walter in panel 1 of page 7 for consideration: gay comedian Scott Thompson of "Kids In The Hall" once (making a gay joke) aptly compared the humiliation of pieing to an unconscious association with facial sexual degradation. Hmm... Between the triggering tale of Kitty Genovese, the presumed abuse of the kidnapped girl, the childhood flashbacks involving his prostituting mother and the recurring image of coupling silhouettes, this character's entire backstory is dripping with sexual trauma.

I think Kovacs' goofy face and small stature underscores that he's incomplete, stunted in growth. His face hasn't really changed much since he was a kid. I also think that sullen immaturity is a big part of his appeal to comics fans, because it's a point of identification.

I'm shook that DC printed these at the time without ads.

I've always wondered about the similarities between the choice Rorschach gives the child killer and the choice Max gives Johnny The Boy in the original Mad Max...

Rorschach was the only character that had principles, he lived by them and he died by them. The only honest man.

I love that picture of a drooling maniac stabbing a bucket of severed heads on the cover of that issue.

I can't recall if it was Moore or Miller, but one of them compared Watchmen and DKR regarding the cynicism. From their respective ending, DKR was clearly the most optimistic work. Moore gives a bit of a hint on that final page, but it's likely that in the world of Watchmen 'the truth' will make things worse, not better.

This issue while extremely dark, maybe my favorite single comic ive read. Talk about transcending what one usually expects from the medium! I think u can see aspects of this issue in "a killing joke",as far as a mans life being terribly altered from a single days events. Like in Kings " It", where stanley discusses having children w/ wife, gets a phone call about pennywise returned, then kills himself on the spot. Master story telling

You guys are saying that Rorschach is made out to be an unlikable character but I liked him as a character throughout the story.

The contrast between Rorschach and his psychiatrist is illustrated by the color of their clothing. Rorschach inhabits a shabby hopeless world of unforgiving rules while the psychiatrist lives in the "good" world of hopeful endings.

I always like to point out the back matter of this issue and Rorschach's writing about Truman dropping the Atomic bomb. I feel like it's Moore comparing Ozymandias' actions to the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but also it's Moore highlighting that Rorschach is OK with mass death. It fits with a post-modern rejection of historical narratives and underlines the idea that ideology is just painted on top of mass murder and war.

It's like everyone wants to act like Rorschach is the hero in issue 12 for wanting to expose Ozymandias, but no one is willing to talk about how America's rise to a global power was based on similar mass death and lies, and Rorschach was ok with that.
