The most vivid moment in the movie that I recall from Dr. Manhattan was when he was "publicly" accused for causing Cancer to his once significant others. The slow-momentum, the slow facial expression that shaped anger and discomfort on Dr. Manhattan's face was truly amazing.

I agree, I absolutely adored him in this role. I found myself caring for the character far more in the film than I had in the comic book, and it was Billy's performance that did it.

This movie has quite a lot of different personality types in it, and the key thing i noticed is that all of the characters have sort of gone off the cliff in the very way that their personality type typically does. Dr Manhattan (INTP) becomes completely detached from humanity. Ozzymandias (INTJ) becomes the evil genius. All the other characters follow the same pattern, it's as if the writer read a list of personality types and went straight to the negative tendencies section and magnified them.

@fsfsfsfsfsfsg: The point is that Adrian looks like a caricature (well, he sort of is) in the novel and transferred to the screen that would have just looked ridiculous, just like the giant squid. The kind of winning charm wouldn't have worked in the movie (caricature again), Goode's version was more realistic. The director decided to give the movie a very realistic feeling and some things just don't work in a movie.

Actually at a later point in the movie they did have Ozymandias explain Bubastis a little. (Obviously not as well as it is explained in the comic book. For there really was no reason for explaining her. She was only a test after all.) For those people who went to the movie and paid attention to everything they said, they would have caught it.

@fsfsfsfsfsfsg: I dunno, I never really felt they made Ozy the bad guy. Squid or bomb.. not that much of a difference. I know what you mean because the contrast of super nice and what he does at the end is not so clear in the movie but judging from the many discussions I've see about the movie what they did was very thought provoking. People still argue about whether Adrian was wrong or write, good or bad and wasn't that the point of the novel as well?

fair enough. And good pointsyou made - lucky you that you liked the portrayal. Obviously novels are like that, you have your own take on the characters, and always some will be disappointed. @55batmanandjoker From everything I read Alan Moore just does not like something made out of his work no matter what it is. He wants complete control or at least to voice himself when he does not have the control to stop it. He sees his comics as his own creation and does not want it to be anything else. I respect that but I do think its a bit much.
@Trampadoo
@Trampadoo 13 жыл бұрын
@fsfsfsfsfsfsg: You need to read some more interviews of Moore, seriously. XD Read up on what he said about Adrian. Are you aware that Moore meant Marooned is an analogy to what Adrian was doing? I should have probably written what Adrian did was not portrait as good by Moore (Adrian himself is indeed not evil). There are no good ones in Moore's Watchmen. It is a common mistake that some people think there is a hero or the good and the bad.

@fsfsfsfsfsfsg: Of course it works in the novel! But you can't transfer it 100% onto the big screen. I just don't get why some people can't see and enjoy the same thing in two very different media? I enjoy both the novel and the movie. Both got flaws and genius moments and I am glad I didn't spoil either of it for myself by being tight arsed about the lack of muscles on one of the actors. It works the other way as well. Some found the novel boring and the squid tacky as well. *shrugs*

@fsfsfsfsfsfsg: And I don't see why all that bulk would have been important. No amount of muscle would have made him that fast, quite the opposite and as long as they show Adrian as someone sort of obsessed with an immaculate appearence and body I am fine with that version. You remind me of a cousin of mine who ruined Lord of the Rings for himself by whining about that character not looking exactely like in the book or that character being cut out even though it made the movie better.

@fsfsfsfsfsfsg: I don't see how the movie changed the basic meaning of the ending of the novel tbh. That giant squid would have been ridiculous on screen and it doesn't really matter whether John or the squid provide the impending doom that scares the shit out of mankind for the next decades to keep peace. And you just can't use all the characters from the novel in a movie.

I have to agree with DenimZero. Mathew Goode was to young to play ozy, just didnt have the same effect for me. Goode did keep that sense of pretentiousness though. And also, Billy Crudup I think just didn't have a square enough face for me as well as too soft a voice. I always just envisioned dr. manhattan as statuesque and Crudup's face is a little too soft. Also, his voice, the pitch is a little too high. His tone and his sense of emptiness were on point though.

Dealing with the whole thing like Dan and Laurie for the greater good, with the burden of knowing the truth, THAT would have been badass. Oh well, I think we both agree that there is tons behind the novel and movie and that it went way over the head of many readers/watchers.

@fsfsfsfsfsfsg: Moore might have a fascination with anarchy, but he despises conservative, facist, right wing politics and he's an advocate of gay rights so Rorschach is not someone Moore meant as a hero. It was quite annoying and amusing at the same time to see how exactely the kind of people Moore criticises thought Rorschach was so cool and whatnot. He's some sort of hero for ppl Moore practically makes fun of and they don't even notice.
