Before Damon Lindelof brought his Watchmen sequel to HBO Zack Snyder tackled seemingly the impossible with an adaption of Alan Moore's Watchmen in 2009. Ten years on does it still hold up? In many ways yes but in some ways no. This is out Caravan Of Garbage review, thanks for watching.

Fun Fact: David Hayter [known for being the voice of Solid Snake in the Metal Gear franchise] wrote a scriptment for Watchmen, though he set it in modern times. The filmmakers must've liked it because he still has a writing credit [which means they used enough of it]. Anyway, Alan Moore once said that Hayter's version was the closest he thought anyone could get to adapting Watchmen. Which is like...the most positive thing I think I've heard from him, despite being a totally neutral statement.

@SA80TAGE
@SA80TAGE 4 жыл бұрын
Why do people say stuff like that... you know movies have writers, right? David Hayter and Alex Tse were the story tellers... it's just the directors job to translate that story to the visual medium, which is exactly what Snyder does, and does well. If you have a problem with Man of Steel, blame Goyer and Nolan as they were the writers. If you have a problem with BvS, Blame Goyer and Terrio.... SNYDER DOES NOT WRITE THESE STORIES. Idiots don't even understand how the industry works.
@bS0up
@bS0up 4 жыл бұрын
True, but I don't think his visual style, while fantastic, suits a story like Watchmen. He portrays the characters as being way too superhuman and the action is filmed in a way to make it look less grounded. It doesn't really work well with the story Allan Moore told. I'd rather he took more liberties with the property and made an adaptation with changes that better suited his style of filmmaking and personal philosophy. As the video suggests, there are plenty of changes to the source material he wanted to make but didn't. Would be interested in seeing that alternate universe version of the film, even if it was overall worst than the original comic.

Samur/Aye Not to be that guy, but I don’t think you fully grasp how movies work either. While it’s true not all directors write screenplays, and Zach Snyder doesn’t write his own, the screenplay is the element with the least respect given to it when it comes to a film. Some directors adhere very closely to the screenplay, some directors throw the whole thing out entirely. Some directors have a hand in the screenplay some don’t. In the end, the director has final call on literally every element of the film. This is how Zach Snyder damaged Man of Steel. The screenplay for Man of Steel isn’t god awful, but it all gets mangled in the edit. If the scenes had been placed in chronological order, the movie would have been a lot better. The constant flashbacks mess with the movie’s flow and also the movie answers the question “will Clark be Superman” before it even asks it. Zach Snyder also should have known to either cut the Pa Kent telling Clark to hide his powers or given that enough screen time to explore this version of Superman, but he didn’t. Zach Snyder had control over the editing of that film and he mangled it. Because a director has final say in the final version a film, barring studio interference, the movie exists in the form it does because of directorial choices, and yes that includes the screenplay. If the screenplay sucks and the director leaves the screenplay as it is, that’s the director’s fault, since they should have known better. It’s the same if the screenplay is great and the director mangled it. Zach Snyder would be a fantastic cinematographer, but he can’t seem to wrap his head around how to actually tell a story.
@ThreadBomb
@ThreadBomb 4 жыл бұрын
@@SA80TAGE I generally agree. The problems with Snyder's films are usually in the script. And although he has a couple of screenwriting credits, it seems that what he does is suggest ideas, then the actual writer does the script. A lot of problems with BvS are due to the writing, not to the ideas (just pay attention to Luthor's dialog and wonder how _anyone_ could have made it work). In some of Snyder's films he's arguably emphasised the visuals at the expense of the story, but when I saw BvS I was actually surprised at how toned-down it was. I expected it to be a lot more spectacular. With Man of Steel, I think the main problem is lack of balance in the script. For a start, it needed to lighten up in the middle, to give the audience a chance to relax before the bombastic action recommenced. Also, the final fight should really have had more human interest - it fell into "blockbuster movie syndrome" where it was spectacular but dull.

I find it a shame how no one mentions how the blowing up the cities hits so much harder in the comics because the backstory is always told through the newstand which feels like just a framing device for the whole series until at the end you see the corpses and realise you actually cared about them even though they were fairly inconsequential characters you'd probably forget to even mention if you were telling someone else the plot. I know they couldn't have made that work in the movie, but I honestly just didn't feel the same sort of drop in the gut hearing about the deaths of multiple cities when I know there's no connection to anyone in those cities. I actually kind of prefer the squid for that reason, the squid leaves identifiable corpses and scenery so the showing of the newstand can hit home, blowing up the entire city wouldn't. It may be a stretch believability wise, but the whole scene in the comics sticks with me in a way that the movie doesn't.

Yeah but, remember how when the movie lost money, Zack Snyder changed his tune completely. When you’re in the position to sell the movie rights to a story you created, you should take care of being involved in the movies production, otherwise you can’t expect the adaptation to resemble what you want it to be like. I like the graphic novel and the movie and I think as long as you don’t try to see the movie less as a direct adaptation and more as a interpretation, they both got their strengths. You just can’t perfectly convert a book (especially a comic book) into a movie if it isn’t written with this change of media in mind.

Personally, shotgunning the novel and then the movie was the perfect experience for me. I was going to skip the movie altogether, but a friend of mine was like "dude, read the book." I did, then saw the movie in theaters some weeks later and was blown away. Yeah, it's not perfect, but as a moving representation of a static comic of God-tier proportions, I think it's a stellar experience.

I don’t think the squid would’ve workedwell in the film. There are separate pieces in the comic book that hint to the squid, that aren’t a part of the actual story, like people going missing (who were taken to work on the project), and a dead psychic’s brain. Dr Manhattan still leaves at the end of the comic so they just cut the squid out because Manhattan still leaves, but just for a different reason now. And I think Alan Moore is a pretentious person, and James is right, if he didn’t want films made of his work, he shouldn’t have sold the rights.

1) Comic writers as well as most animation creators don't get a lot of rights. They usually get paid once, and then the rest of the money for reprints and such go to the bigger company. 2) It was in Moore's contract that the rights of Watchmen returned to him once it went of out reprint, but DC has constantly reprinted the book, screwing him out of the money and rights he deserves. 3) People have to live and get money, so of course he's gonna sell the rights, but that doesn't mean he doesn't get a say in how it turns out. The Percy Jackson movies are infamous for being bad, but does Rick Riordan selling the rights make him not able to comment on how bad those movies are?

Zack Snyder only makes a good movie when he's got an amazing storyboard, AKA comic, to follow. He should have been a visual director, and that's it. The squid ending makes more sense because it's supposed to bring the Earth together against a common outside threat. If Dr. Manhattan, America's greatest weapon, is the cause of the destruction, why would the USSR want to unite with us? That would just drive all the other countries to form an alliance against the US.

Dr0pkidd well WB keeps chopping down his cuts so his full versions end up on the home releases. He originally wanted the full version so he has the animated Tales of the Black Freighter made and intercut with the live action, then he felt it didn’t quite work and was too long for the theatrical cut so he took it out, then WB cut out scenes in addition to that to get the theatrical cut. He included his “directors cut” which is the one he likes the best and then later released the ultimate cut for fans who wanted the full thing even though it wasn’t his intended version.

As for the squid thing, my beef is less that they swapped it out with Dr. Manhattan and more that Ozymandia's total genocide doesn't have nearly the same impact. We're desensitized to SFX, so a big blue explosion that just disintegrates everyone is nowhere near as effective as actually seeing the bodies littered in the streets.

This movie is one of the best methods of adaptation I've ever seen. Like, seriously, I cannot imagine a better way to shorten Watchmen into two-and-a-half hours, keeping most of the amazing visuals, and nearly every plot point than this. However...the themes and characters were hit so hard in the process of adaptation that it brings the whole film so far down. So much of the nuance, point, and, frankly, edge was sanded off of all these characters, especially Rorshach and Ozymandious. And really, it feels like whoever wrote or edited this film didn't realize that the film as a whole was supposed to say that any kind of superheroism is an eventual negative for everyone. I'm not sure if Snyder wrote this movie, but a lot of it's flaws (namely, not understandingthe source material) would follow with him into his later films.

There is an even more accurate version of the film in the “Ultimate Cut,” you get to see all the scenes at the newspaper stand as well as the entire “Tale of the Black Freighter” story inter spliced at the points where it was in the graphic novel. It’s a little long though, 3 hours and 35 minutes.

By making them darker, more human, and openly broken, Alan Moore radically change the way they were depicted. Zack Snyder took on Watchmen as his first superhero movie and we have had to deal with his Kroger Brand/Pseudo-deep characters in almost ever other movie in this genre. Hugh Jass The comics condemn the heroes though but the movie overstylises & glamourises the violence in typical Snyder fashion. That’s one of the pitfalls of making movies as social commentary with bad people as protagonists. You risk making the protagonists look cool & the audience to like them eg Watchmen, Joker, Fight Club, Natural Born Killers, etc. Because movie viewers don’t think of the whole plot when they think of a movie, they think of small bits & pieces like The Comedian looking cool during his fight in the beginning, or Brad Pitt looking like a sexual god with the shirtless body in Fight Club.
