Mr Hooper was a really intense one. I was 8 at the time and not much into Sesame Street by then, yet for some reason I watched it with my mum (in a re-airing, I think - Mum had mentioned he wasn't on any more and probably found out why and about the episode). We were both in tears. I hadn't yet experienced a close death and it was moving and devastating.

Phil Hartman’s death was definitely the most shocking to me. Especially since he didn’t pass from natural causes. He was murdered by his mentally ill wife. News Radio’s writers never recovered as the show’s humor tanked in the fifth season.

I remember watching the Sesame Street episode where Mr. Hooper died. They turned his death into a teachable moment for the kids watching in addition to honoring his passing. It was an unprecedented and brave decision by the folks at Sesame Street, it was one of the most memorable moments in the show’s history.

When Christopher Reeve died, I was so sad. I loved Smallville and I was very happy he returned to be on it and was looking forward to him being on it more. He was supposed to be on it more than just the two times he appeared. I know he was going to have at least one scene or episode with Annette O’Toole. Smallville is my favorite show ever and I’m so happy he was on it. It also really hit me because I grew up with Christopher Reeve as my Superman as a kid. I had a poster of him as Superman on my wall and him passing away really hit me. It felt like Superman died to me and Smallville was very classy in how his death was handled. R.I.P.

Speaking of NCIS, Gibb's dad, Ralph Waite, playing the senior Gibbs, was a very well established character with some genuinely emotional episodes. Unfortunately, his real-life passing led to his character dying of a stroke. They had a send-off episode for him, with Gibbs passing the torch (Gibbs' store) to his dedicated fellow employee. Edit: Autocorrect changed Waite to White.

Casting Ralph Waite as Jethro's father was fantastic, as was casting Robert Wagner as Tony's.

Yes. Originally James Garner, friend and mentor to Mark Harmon, was cast as Jackson Gibbs. But he suffered a stroke before production started on “Heartland,” and the role then went to Waite. I think Waite fit the character better.

John Ritter's death affected another show as well. Mr. Ritter was also JD's Dad on #Scrubs. In Season 4, Episode 6 titled "My Cake" they paid tribute to JD's Dad Sam. Later in the series, JD's son is named Sam after Ritter's character.

@@KevyNovaI thought South Park's treatment of Chef and Isaac Hayes was despicable. They were going to do an episode about Scientology. Hayes is a Scientology, so spoke out about it, but the creators fired him and then killed off Chef in humiliating ways. Isaac Hayes was sick and died soon after, yet the show mocked him, rather than thanked for his contribution, simply for standing up to them.

Ever since I've started watching Family Guy since 2011, Adam West became one of my favorite characters along with Angela. When Carrie Fisher died, my heart just shattered and when Adam West also passed less than a year after her, I just started bawling 😭😭 my eyes out in my room. I love how they paid tribute to the late Batman and Star Wars icons in both episodes of the show. They may be gone but their memories they have given me and many other fans will never ever be forgotten. RIP West and Fisher

I can think of one you missed. Ralph Waite, who had a recurring role as Jackson Gibbs, Gibbs' father, in NCIS. He died in 2014, so instead of the usual end of season cliffhanger, the show had his character die and the episode was a tribute to him.

How could you leave out the most beloved character from one of the most popular Western series of all-time, Hoss Cartwright on Bonanza (1959-73)? Dan Blocker died unexpectedly after complications from surgery shortly before season 14 was to begin filming, causing production on the season premier to be delayed as the episode had to be re-written, as it's plot was centered around Hoss. His off-screen death is acknowledged in the season premier by the character's little brother Joe (played by Michael Landon, who wrote and directed the episode.) Without its most popular character, ratings took a nose dive and that 14th season would prove to be Bonanza's last.
