20 - Nice to note. I heard a doctor specialized in the disease that causes intolerance to gluten say that he heard people claim things they got rid of thanks to avoiding gluten that are completely not related to gluten at all. And yeah, I heard many many people were quitting on gluten, and I don't know where the idea come from, as the disease causing gluten intolerance is said to be absolutely rare. In the past it was even a bit problem when you were on that diet as gluten-free products ware hardly available in stores.... Now you find them all over the place. 19 - "Meat-free doesn't always mean healthy". Pointing that out can sometimes even be bad for your health, as some people can get really dangerous when you say that. 18 - Froyo - Never heard of it. It sounds tasty, I mean at first hearing about it. I would never have the illusion from the start it was actually good for my body. 17 - You know when I drink sports drinks? On days I actually did very extremely much physical action. For a coder and novel writer, those days are not daily routine, but hey I do have my more active days. I am a fan of the Efteling, and I visit it every year, and you'd be amazed how much energy you use during a day in a theme park. Overall, I hate those drinks, but they got it when I am really physically active... And that was what they were invented for... 16 - When it comes to added sugar and salt, the entire stock of an average supermarket should actually be on this list. 15 - Organic food is very extremely healthy... for the wallet of the people in charge of its production. 14 - I never heard of healthy variants of muffins... Or maybe that was a trend that didn't make it to the Netherlands, yet? 13 - I was wondering here 12 - I hate salad, anyway. Already did as a kid, and never developed a liking for them after. According to some people I still have a talent for making that, though, and since I hate the stuff myself they can be sure I won't have eaten most of it, before it's served. Figures. I think packaged salads are as healthy or unhealthy as the recipes that floated around before you could find them. Most of the ingredients I see mentioned on the package are the same as the ones I was taught to use. Yes, including dressing as dressing is not new. Point is, when I make salad myself I can opt to leave it out. In a ready-to-go-package, it's either already in there... or not. Now as dressing can shorten the expiring period of the salad itself, I find that stuff mostly in a separate, packaged with the salad itself. Well, if you don't want the dressing then... Just don't open that sub-package to throw it in... But since I hate that stuff anyway, dressing or no dressing.... I'll skip this anyway. 11 - Dried fruit... I never really thought about if it's healthy or not. I've never been too fond of that stuff. 10 - Never saw these chips before.... But I could guess from the start that due to them being deep fried they would be as good or bad as regular chips. 9 - I always believed them to be bad for health from the start 8 - The discussion is always different. Something it's good, then it's bad. It is about time health expert come to the final conclusion about this. 7 - I had my gall-bladder removed a few years ago. The doctors insisted that I had to watch out with fat, but definitely not stop eating it, and that I should absolutely not check all packages of food for the amount of fat it contains. They only warned me not to eat pizza every day. (YUCK! I do like pizza every once in awhile, but every day.. the thought alone makes me wanna puke). 6 - The name alone tells me only to use them, when I am actually doing a lot of physical action. 5 - Hey, some juices taste good. 4 - I was never sure about cereal, but I am not sure if Wonka's claim that it's made from the stuff coming from pencil sharpeners is correct, either. 3 - You know plain healthy yoghurt tastes horrible, and unhealthy yoghurt can be delicious.... As soon as it tastes good, you can count on it, it's bad for your health 🤣 2 - Let's say... Milk in any kind of way isn't as healthy as they always claimed. 1 - Good one.... As soon as it says "diet" (or "light" as you will see it on the packages in the Netherlands. Yes, an English word on a Dutch variant of a product, cool huh) I know to run away from it, especially if I actually were on a diet. Ironically enough....

I have to read labels carefully due to allergies, and there really are excellent chips and such on the market. You just have to read labels and taste test. For example, Off the Eaten Path makes fantastic chips based on beans, peas, and veg. Not only are the ingredients fine, but the taste is really good. Also the oil used matters, especially for plain chips and roasted nuts. I avoid soybean oil , cottonseed oil, and canola oil for plain chips and nuts and popcorn simply because they are not tasty food oils. Any other oil tastes fine to me in chips and popcorn: corn, peanut, safflower, sunflower, avocado, coconut, olive oils for example all taste fine to me. Whenever manufacturers stop using those and go to the ones on my avoid list, it always means they are making their product cheaper and not worth buying again.

Depending on the flavour and the brand, It mostly taste weird but sometimes good, you might get used to the weird taste after awhile. the main thing wrong with preserved food is the salt added to extend shelf life! adults are recommended to get a little above 1000 mg of sodium a day dependent on sex, but the average American adult gets 4000 mg. the increased intake can lead to health issues like hypertension which can be pretty serious! Also, the more sodium we consume, the less potassium our bodies can absorb which also leads to some pretty serious health affects. and not necessarily all food, but a lot of processed foods remove the nutritional stuff (like white bread/rice/noodles instead of whole grain/whole wheat).

My mother actually had celiac, in fact Dr. Murray from the Mayo Clinic was her doctor. She got diagnosed right around the time that gluten-free became a trend, which really pissed her off because whenever she'd order something gluten-free, people would assume she was just following the trend.
@monstersociety3360

I wonder who's at fault in that situation? The people who accused her of "just following a trend" who were clearly being judgmental? Or the fools who MADE that a douchey trend in the first place, ruining it for people who ACTUALLY have problems the way your Mom does? Both. The answer is both.

@@monstersociety3360 first world problem
@jwoolman5
@jwoolman5 Жыл бұрын
@@monstersociety3360- who cares why someone prefers a non-gluten product? It doesn't ruin things for celiacs even if other people just like more variety in their food. It just expands the market for gluten-free foods, which can be a good thing. There are cultures that never really got on the wheat wagon, after all. Wheat eating is not a universal habit. It just might reduce the profits of the junk food manufacturers that rely heavily on wheat. Hence the drive to spread the idea that it is unhealthy to not eat wheat when you can eat it without problems . Do we think that about anything else? Really? Consider the likely source for such "everybody knows" nonsense. Eat what you want, having other options for other people causes nobody any harm. And problems with food are complex. Just because gluten doesn't cause a certain problem doesn't mean it isn't caused by some other component in wheat and related grains. That's exactly what happened to me - I developed a sensitivity to something else in wheat but have no obvious problem with gluten itself, so I can eat seitan products (seitan is just gluten) and am not bothered by foods made with wheat protein or wheat gluten (which means wheat protein) on the label. But I have very reproducible and painful and persistent problems if I eat too much wheat or too often so I make sure that I have wheat-free (and thus gluten-free) alternatives handy. I used to have to make my own crackers, so I'm glad there are tasty non-wheat commercial crackers available now because I'm really tired of the DIY approach... The problem surfaced even though I was making my own bread. I do have food allergies, which can mean a tendency to develop other problems, so in general I aim for a lot of variety anyway. There is a big food world out there beyond wheat.
@Terahnee
@Terahnee Жыл бұрын
One time I ordered gluten-free pasta at Old Spaghetti Factory (I was not being 'on trend', just curious what it tasted like). I thought they handled it kind of interesting. They asked if it was a preference or an allergen. I asked why. The server said if it's an allergy, they take extra special care to avoid cross contamination. So, my gluten-free pasta was probably boiled in water that regular pasta had been boiled in as it was only a preference, hence, not totally gluten-free.
@jwoolman5
@jwoolman5 Жыл бұрын
@@Terahnee - yes, although that question is kind of annoying, it's true that someone with a severe allergy or celiac disease does need extra precautions to avoid traces of gluten, which for celiacs especially can cause long-term problems. That's why now usually it is noted on packages that the food is manufactured in facilities that also process various potential allergens - if they use the same equipment and don't do a thorough cleaning first (or even if they try), enough might get into the gluten-free or whatever food to cause problems for some sensitive people. The contamination can occur in the field, since wheat fields may be nearby. One fellow with celiac said he was only able to eat steel cut oats if he carefully examined them first and picked out any stray wheat kernels among them. I'm lucky that I have a threshold before I react to wheat and so traces of it are no problem for me. Also my reaction is painful for many hours but not potentially fatal (few allergies are of the anaphylactic shock producing variety, thankfully, and none of mine are in that category so far). I just need to be careful not to eat it too frequently or in too great a quantity at once. I have other allergies/intolerances that operate the same way and it is not uncommon to have some allergies that seem permanent (will react even after long avoidance) and others that can be managed by not eating the offender too often or too much of it at a time.

In the margarine vs butter debate, I like to do what a friend taught me. I put equal parts butter and heart healthy oil such as peanut oil in a blender. The oil balances the cholesterol of the butter and a side benefit is that it doesn’t go rock hard in the fridge.

There are some plant butters based on non-dairy oils that are quite good (and some that are awful, beware the usual suspects claiming their stuff is "healthy"). The plant butters are not like margarine but typically have a much simpler ingredient list and the good ones taste as least as good as dairy butter to me. Also buttery-flavored coconut oil can be good (depending on the brand) with butyrate (the substance that makes butter taste like butter) added from fermented vegetable sources. Nutiva makes really good coconut oil, buttery and not. I've tried others but always go back to Nutiva. The brand really matters. If it doesn't taste good, that's a problem with the brand and not the kind of product. I am allergic to dairy but can tolerate butter, but prefer the good plant butters which actually taste better to me. Country Crock has an excellent line of plant butter sticks based on sustainably harvested palm oil (which makes it solid), canola oil, and one third oil (either almond oil or olive oil or avocado oil, all tasty). I do not like their tub plant butter - whatever they add to make it spreadable tastes bad to me (it's definitely a different formula). Miyoko and the German Flora plant butters are much pricier but also excellent. I tried ghee, which is clarified butter and so is shelf-stable as a simple fat. I used a coupon to get a pricey brand but didn't like it. But I discovered that it was fine if I mixed it with coconut oil so I could finish the jar. I've tried other plant butters found at Kroger's but really am not impressed. But I was never impressed by the margarines the same manufacturers make also. Some manufacturers are just not that clever, they think they just have to say it's healthy and people will ignore the taste. Handy tip: Avoid buying anything aimed at dieters. Buy the versions marketed to real eaters, such as Lundberg for real rice cakes rather than the cardboard low-calorie ones peddled by Quaker Oats.

“Diet” soda actually makes you hungry. While the companies brag about their products being low calorie, those are empty calories. They have absolutely no nutritional value. Your body is expecting usable calories so when it gets those empty calories it encourages your appetite because the body wants and needs usable calories. The only time in my life I’ve eaten protein bars were during the summer vacation months when I was a daycare/OSC staff. Even then, that was only on all-day outdoor field trips(10am-3pm) when I knew I’d be lucky if I got fifteen minutes to scarf down as much heat-blasted food as I could before being called back out to run around with the kids. It was like a four+ hour workout, Lol, and I’d eat anything that had protein yet wouldn’t spoil after a few hours in the sun, give sweet stress relief, and would give me enough energy to hold out until we’d return at 3pm. And no, I couldn’t pack anything with nuts; they were against allergy rules and regulations. Wish I’d known about soy butter!

This was a really good video, some very common mistakes people make get highlighted here. One that very recently happened to me is the bagged salads one, I started to lose weight and so my mum wanted to help me out and she bought a LOT of bagged salads for me, I told her they aren't healthy because they're very high in calories, she still didn't understand it so she bought me more lol I ended up eating them, after throwing out the high calorie dressings they include in it. Organic is spot on too, people think they're eating healthy when they're eating organic, all they're doing is eating expensively. Protein bars or sports drinks are all about marketing, they're targeting people that want to be healthy and help them exceed in their workouts, but the reality is they don't help out much, if at all compared to alternatives. People hear the word electrolytes and think it's something amazing, it really isn't. Just drink some water bruh. Smoothies and fruit juices are another one, its an easy way to learn that too much of a good thing becomes a bad thing, smoothies and juices are very easy to over consume and thus you'll take in a lot of calories. It's the same with the dried fruit, I like how you said you wouldn't eat 12 apricots, but you could easily eat 12 dried apricots. "Fat free" foods, the amount of times I've seen lollies marketed as "fat free" utterly disgusts me. The companies behind the lollies are trying to trick people into thinking the lollies are healthier because it lacks fat, these companies should be punished for it. Sure, the lollies are fat free, but they're 100% sugar. I even realised this before I became health conscious and I'd joke about it. Also, we're in the 2020's now, I thought we were over this "fat is bad" phase. Truth is we aren't over it, people still think cholesterol is bad. When companies remove fat from something, they often replace it with something, that usually becomes sugar. The milk one isn't true for the milk I buy, or, used to buy. The brand of milk I used to buy (which was skim milk) they didn't substitute the fat for sugar, the levels of sugar are the same, the skim milk is half the calories of the full cream milk. I don't buy it anymore though as I now buy almond milk, which is a quarter the calories of the skim milk lol As for the last one, it depends on you mean by healthy, does diet soft drinks give you any health benefit? Nope. Are the chemicals in diet soft drink bad for you? Probably. But is drinking diet soft drink better for you than drinking sugary soft drink, yeah. If someone is addicted to sugary soft drink, telling them to switch to sugar free versions is the most realistic option. One thing that wasn't mentioned is plant based meat alternatives, they often have the same amount, or more, calories than the real thing.

Often it is said that, the less ingredients something has or the less processed it is, the healthier it is for you. If this is the case, then any type of meat substitutes that has a multitude of ingredients. The same could be said for certain types of "nut milk", which is actually nut juice since nuts don't have teats nor mammary glands and thus can't produce milk. But as Lewis Black has pointed out, you can't look label such as nut juice, because that just sounds disgusting.

You actually DO need and benefit from additional sodium during long, rigorous hikes in hot weather. I hiked the Grand Canyon, rim-to-rim over two and a half days as a Boy Scout. One of the essential additions to our hiking kit besides a healthy piece of mole skin for blisters, we always carried salt tablets to help with fluid retention if needed. There is no substitute for carrying plenty of water (and iodine tabs for the occasion creek refill back in the day), but salt can absolutely benefit and trail mix was part of our regular food supply. Yes, we made it ourselves because retailers hadn't caught on, yet. To this day, I still make my own primarily because retail versions suck.

There’s a lot that I could say about this video, but the thing about this one that stands out to me the most is that I would never give a general recommendation to the public to drink whole milk. The major sticking point is that about 2/3 of Americans are overweight. There’s nothing wrong with two percent milk for most people, unless you’re lactose intolerant or have some type of kidney disease, or you’re a vegan, which is a different story. There are enough molecules of fat in 2% milk to serve as transport vehicles for the molecules of vitamin A and D. This comment is not a substitute for a consultation with a registered dietitian nutritionist. We know enough about this now to fill up a chapter in a nutrition textbook. And as a side note, milk doesn’t work for rehydration. And as always, let the buyer beware.

In reference to diet soda, based on the nutrition class I'm currently taking (and I suggest everyone interested to do their own research, too!) weight gain after drinking diet soda is NOT related to the soda itself. It's related to individuals thinking they can eat/drink more because they're not consuming calories from the drink. Regardless of if you're diabetic or not, my professor ( a registered dietician) says diet soda is preferable if you're going to drink it. Of course water, milk, etc. is preferable because of vitamins and minerals, but diet soda is definitely recommended for individuals who are going to drink something sugary anyways (unless you need sugar spikes for health reasons). Once again this is the research I've done and what one professor has said, it may be disputed, but I would suggest doing your own research because I do not agree that normal soda is preferable to diet.

Growing your own veggies and fruits as much as is possible, is best to know that what you are eating is actually organic or not. Plus, as for the bran muffins, try and get a recipe where you can use some applesauce to substitute the oil and possibly some of the sugar. To me, organic is free of chemical pest controls and fertilizers that chemical vs natural, like bone meal blood meal (I think even some sources of blood meal can be chemical laden) chicken (composted) manure, bunny manure, even composted horse or cow manure. Bat Guano (poop) greensand, plus other non chemical soil enriching elements, even fresh seaweed (with the salt rinsed out) or the bagged up dried seaweed, also the bottled up and concentrated seaweed from "King neptune". BUT, before adding anything to a plants soil, make sure that adding it is not going to make the soil unbalanced in PH or nutrients for your plants. Even if you live in a small apartment, as long as you have a balcony or any space with mostly full sun for most of the day, you can get small planters on legs that you just fill with some good potting soil, and you can grow a bit of some veggies or even some fruits, as long as the fruits won't grow too rampantly.
