“THE [AMERICAN CIVIL] WAR BEGAN IN MY FRONT YARD AND ENDED IN MY PARLOR.” - Wilmer McLean The Civil War started in full force at Wilmer McLean's house located at Bull Run, Virginia. Fearing for his families safety he moved to Appomattox, Virginia about 120 miles south of his home in Bull Run. The Union troops pursued Lee who made his final stand at Appomattox Court House and was forced to surrender. The Civil War ended at Wilmer McLean's house when it was decided by both parties to meet there to end the war.

@@SharkyPopTart I know it's two years late, but the man who compiled crosswords for The Daily Telegraph during World War II was a school headmaster near a camp of troops preparing for D-Day. The guy would have his students write words into the puzzle for him, and then he would write clues for the words they wrote. Some of the words they used were military codewords (although he wasn't aware of that) they had overheard or picked up from interacting with the soldiers near the school. The result was some pretty coincidental words showing up at interesting times, and leading the British to suspect some espionage was going on. For example: -One day before the Dieppe Raid (August 18, 1942), "Dieppe" was the answer for the clue "French port" -In the months before D-Day, the words "Gold" "Juno" and "Sword" appeared in the crosswords as well (obviously those were codenames for the D-Day beaches), but these were common enough words in crossword puzzles that it was treated as a coincidence -The word "Utah" appeared on May 2, 1944 in the puzzle as the answer for "One of the U.S." -The word "Omaha" appeared on May 22, 1944 as the answer for "Red Indian on the Missouri" -The word "Overlord" (codename of the whole operation) appeared on May 27, 1944 -The word "Mulberry" (Mulberry harbors) appeared on May 30, 1944 -The word "Neptune" (codename of the naval phase of the operation) appeared on June 1, 1944 TL;DR: A guy used a bunch of codewords and names for stuff relating to the D-Day landings in the crossword puzzles he created to the point that the Allies thought he was a spy passing information to the Germans through crossword puzzles.

I remember reading about a coincidence that occurred in one of the northern US states (I think either Iowa or Ohio) about a head-on collision between two cars that killed either one or both drivers. also, if you dig deeper on the "kennedy/lincoln" info, there is more to it. Both presidents were elected to Congress in '46 and later to the presidency in '60. Both married women in their 20s while themselves in their 30s. Both lost a son while living in the White House. Both were shot in the presence of their wives. Both assassins, John Wilkes Booth and Lee Harvey Oswald, were born in '39 and were known by their three names, composed of fifteen letters. Booth ran from Ford's Theatre and was caught in a warehouse; Oswald ran from the Dealey Plaza warehouse and was caught in a theater. Both presidents were runners-up for the party's nomination for vice-president in '56. Both successors were Southern Democrats surnamed Johnson; both were born in '08 and their first names contained six letters. The assassins were both Southerners. Both were particularly concerned with civil rights. and made their views strongly known. Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation in 1862, which became law a year later. A century later, Kennedy presented his reports to Congress on Civil Rights, during the famous March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom that same year. Both presidents were shot in the head on a Friday and died at nearby locations (Lincoln at the Petersen House across the street and Kennedy at Parkland Memorial Hospital down the road). Lincoln was shot at Ford's Theatre. Kennedy was shot in a Ford car: a Lincoln limousine. Lincoln had a secretary named Kennedy who told him not to go to Ford's Theatre. Kennedy had a secretary named Evelyn Lincoln (whose husband Harold's nickname was Abe), and she warned him not to go to Dallas. Both Oswald and Booth were assassinated before they could be put on trial. coincidence? i think not!

Charlie Chaplin was born on April 16, 1889. Adolf Hitler was born on April 20, 1889. Four days apart. The mustache that these two sported was very popular at the time. Many men wore this type of mustache. In terms of having the mustache first, Hitler had a much larger mustache while he was in the Army during WWI.

Another cool thing about the James Dean incident, or I guess more creepy than cool, is that Alec Guiness actually told him, like some sort of premonition, that if he drive that car he would die, that was about a week before the accident

Kennedy was shot from a storage building (book depository) and his alleged assassin was captured in a theater. Lincoln was shot in a theater and his assassin was tracked to and shot in a storage building (a barn). Both shooters also have the same number of letters in their full names.
