I had a surfer friend who for her entire life, until she was 42 years old, thought the Christmas lyric, "...In a one-horse, open sleigh" was actually, "...with your one horse, soap, and sleigh". Most of these are just common logic. For instance I didn't hear "Let's pee in the spotlight." I hear "That's me in the spotlight." Even WITH the fake lyrics up. Some of them were understandable, but most made me think "...Really?"

You also have to take into consideration the quality of sound in which these have been heard. You are sitting here listening to them on your modern headphones or speakers. A lot of these songs are older and at the time if on the radio could sound of less quality making the words harder to distinguish.

I remember a few from my misbegotten youth. Several people had different versions of Louie Louie. Then there was the different versions of I'm Blue. My next door neighbor thought the old Osmond Brother's song "Like a Yo-Yo" actually said "sock a yo-yo" . We couldn't figure out what the singer from paper lace was singing in the song "the night chicago died". The actual lyrics are "And the door swung open wide, and my Daddy stepped inside, and he kissed my Momma's face and he brushed her tears away". And last but not least, there's the Song by England Dan and John Ford Coley called "I'd really love to see you tonight". The real lyrics are "I'm not talkin' 'bout movin' in..." But I have heard someone singing "I'm not talkin bout Melanin" and even "I'm not talkin bout my linen" . That last one was from a movie.

Always surprises me when people mishear a lyrics that's the title of the song. That said, I've never heard of some of these. The R.E.M., Paul Young and Abba were completely new to me. How people misheard those I still can't hear. My favorite mondegreen, er whatever, was when I was in a roller rink (just dated myself there) and heard in a crap-ass sound system "My Sharona" for the FIRST time. I thought I was cool as hell skating around singing "R-R-R-Rice-a Roni"... Took me 5 years (derp) to figure out how dumb I really was the whole time wondering why they didn't reference "the San Francisco treat" no joke. Another more innocent example was my mom hearing the Christmas carol "Walking in a Winter Wonderland" she heard "In the meadow we can build a snow man, and pretend that he is sparse and brown." She grew up where snow meant it was patchy and muddy. Adorable!
