I'm not English, but I grew up watching far too much British television for any singular child to be allowed, and I have spent a fair bit of time in England to the point I can usually tell the region a Brit is from based on their accent when I meet them in the states. I can't place Dinklage's accent at all. It sounds overdone. I didn't know he wasn't British when I first started watching GoT, but he still sounded off to me. It sounded like he was up-playing a stage-accent. When I found out he was American, everything clicked. Now this is my opinion on his accent in the beginning. I feel it's still a bit off, though that may be confirmation bias on my part, but it has significantly improved as the show went on. It's MUCH better now, but definitely not award-worthy.

The problem people have with the English accent (especially Americans) is that they elongate the sounds of vowels. English has a very 'lazy' pronunciation of it's vowels where they're shortened and almost non-existent. A similar example is how non-Irish people do an Irish accent. Over emphasising the vowel in words like "time" and "pint". Robert Downey Jr, Angelina Jolie and even Johnny Depp are guilty of this. Though, the guys from Spinal Tap are much much closer. A better way to practice it would be to have a quick run to get yourself out of breath and then try your English accent. You'd stumble over the vowels to catch your breath and that would likely be a closer emulation of the lazy vowels I mentioned.
@Melayahm015 жыл бұрын
I agree, I usually listen for the 'O' sound, which most Americans have to draw out and curl, instead of the clipped sound of BBC english. Because this is the English most Americans do. Johnny Depp's East London is good, but it all sounds the same. RDJ gets it, but I feel it sounds a bit forced. I remember Dwight Schultz in an episode of the A Team doing an excellent English accent, including the 'O's.
@charlotte71535 жыл бұрын
I mean this is a really broad, and wholly incorrect assumption. You’re going to hear two very different ways of talking if you listen to somebody from the West Country talk versus somebody from East Sussex. Or Cockney London versus North Yorkshire. The latter suggestion of running and getting yourself out of breath is such a far reach, I’m not trying to be rude but a comment like this comes across as really poorly researched and I’m not at all touchy, but I am mildly offended that this is how you apparently think is the best way to mimic us...

No Hugh Jackman?? He did posh English accent rather well in Flushed Away.
@adamlewis57006 жыл бұрын
but he's Australian and has the inside route to the British accent lol, actually I have no idea if it's easier for them. His American accent isn't bad either. He's just overall a super talented dude. He acts, he sings, he dances, he lifts, he has a nice family, what can't that guy do really

For me the sign of a good actor is whether or not they can pull off another accent. Really impressed with Meryl Streep’s accent.

My brother can do lots of accents and that is partly due to Kevin Kline.

Peter Frank yeah Kevin Kline had a British accent in Beauty and the beast and it was spot on.

Weird, as Kevin Kline's accent in As You Like It is woeful..

Saying THE English accent is like saying THE ice cream flavour. You'll find more accents in 60 miles in England than you will post boxes.
@Teafa6 жыл бұрын
Ha! Right! Same as America. But for some reason when people "DO" an American accent.. they tend to do the "Cowboy" one.. Weird, eh?
@gaston68006 жыл бұрын
@Teaf There are much greater variations in England than in the United States when it comes to accents though. There is a general American accent. Not so with England. You could even say there's a general North American accent since Canadians sound almost identical.

Where's John Hillerman? A Texan who became the posh Higgins in Magnum PI, learning to do a British accent from watching Laurent Olivier movies. "My God Magnum! Not being in this list? Worse than losing Singapore in the second world war!"
@DarthPerkins6 жыл бұрын
Musical Neptunian Now that WAS a terrific accent! I'm English and I thought he was as well.
@musicalneptunian6 жыл бұрын
What Hillerman also did that was amazing was that he kept the accent no matter what was happening. There was one episode where at the end Higgins holds a Japanese ceremonial dagger and Magnum says "you know Higgins that once those dagger is withdrawn it has to take blood". Then Higgins says smiling evilly "I know!" and runs after Magnum and Rick. He kept that accent in all that. Amazing.
@ladyi76096 жыл бұрын
Yay, two notable Texans for the topic!!! (The other being Renee Zellwegger, from near Houston, a fellow South Texan!) So there's hope for me yet!

This is IMHO one of the funniest scenes of Magnum PI where Higgins [Hillerman] delvers a knock out line "You're playing games again..." Enjoy. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pZqnqKtsg5d_l68
