Wow! I would have loved to have read a book written by Gladys. Her book would've done very well. I read the Marvelettes' book, but too bad her story wasn't published. Also, thank you for posting this interview!

this needs to be included in the rock and roll hall museum to discuss the business as it really was and is. everything she says seems to be well known but unstoppable

I did some research into songwriting credits. The original release of "Please Mr. Postman," has Georgia Dobbins and William Garrett as songwriters. The Beatles did a cover of this song as well. Neither the late Miss Dobbins estate, or Mr. Garrett's estate has received royalties.

Such an incredible window to Gladys Horton's journey with The Marvelettes, & how she & the group had to deal with the business part of things while still so young & inexperienced - surrounded by business people they thought they could trust. Rest in Peace Gladys & thank you for your songs & wonderful contributions 🙏 Long live The Marvelettes ❤

I’m sad they never got the credit or made the money they deserved. Their popularity faded as they were pushed aside. My favorite “ Don’t mess with Bill “..

Lamont dozier stated on 'Making of Hitsville' he took 'Where did our love go' to the marvelettes but they did'nt want it so he took it to the Supremes, They did'nt think it was a hit but it shot to the top. Did Holland, Dozier, Holland get publishing rights for songs they wrote for Motown?

Nope!That's Why HDH left Motown because BG didn't wanna share publishing (also they didn't like what happened with Flo)
@heentlasaa99742 жыл бұрын
@@glittergoth7167 Thanks Glitter, There's alot of money in Publishing, that's why Michael Jackson bought Publishing rights for the Beatles Music. Lamont Dozier stated that BG signed the Supremes as Teens to a contract where for every 45 single sold They'd split 2.8 cents among the Trio. Mary Wilson stated the Motown Revue would travel in a bus that had a broken down Toilet , they had a tour of 94 one nighters and only stayed in a hotel twice out of a 3 month tour!

Indeed. I highly recommend AshleySaysSo’s KZbin channel. She researches and does in-depth video documentaries on a lot of musicians (MANY from Motown) in a very entertaining, story-telling way. Incredibly binge-worthy, informative and eye-opening the way she spills all “the tea”.

It doesn't sound like the book was ever published. There's another book entitled The Marvelettes: Motown's Mystery Girl Group. Katherine Anderson contributed a lot to the book. It's probably still on Amazon.

The marvelettes did NOT WANT the song. Be clear
@marvinwhittaker13203 жыл бұрын
I'm very clear about that but the Marvalletes gave Motown it's very first No.1 Pop tune Please Mr. Postman but was pushed aside because the supremes became the new attraction to Motown and Berry Gordy
@raymonsmith88213 жыл бұрын
The Marveletts did not want Where Did Our Love Go ,so it was given to The Supremes and it became their first major hit. Standard practice. Motown was a business and their practices were standard at every company. The artists were young with no legal representation!
@marvinwhittaker13203 жыл бұрын
@@raymonsmith8821 for some of the Motown Artists they didn't receive much money, the company focused on the bigger acts like Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, The Supremes, The Miracles, and Stevie Wonder.
@raymonsmith88213 жыл бұрын
@@marvinwhittaker1320 Most definitely, that was standard business practices in the music industry during that time not only at Motown but all record labels.

Motown business dealings nothing new in entertainment biz. Give Mr Gordy credit, he helped to create superstars out of young women. 2:15 is troubling (Freddie Gorman) and its been said many times before by other Marvelettes, however, he did add lyrics enabling him to be a co-writer, lets be fair, the truth in the middle. I admire all of them equally while I feel for Gladys, Kat, Georgeanna and Wanda.
