I just ordered one of these coolers for my 3970X. The Gigabyte Aorus 280 AOI cooler I've been using is terrible for this CPU, despite being on AMD's list of approved coolers. It looks cool, but idle temps are atrocious at 55-60C and it's always running the fans at high RPM, so I'm hoping the ProSiphon is much quieter than the AOI (hopefully these new fans help) and it seems like it should result in a MUCH cooler CPU.

did you receive it yet, any thoughts?
@braincandytv3 жыл бұрын
@@munchiesNcrunchies I did receive it but I haven’t had a chance to use it yet. When I installed the cooler, one of the CPU risers (screw receivers) popped off the motherboard, despite putting minimal torque on the screw, and despite this being ASUS’s flagship Zenith II Extreme board, which is supposed to have better build quality. Seems like these CPU risers are only partially glued to the board? Anyway, I’m waiting for a replacement board from ASUS, so hopefully I’ll finally get to install the IceGiant soon. As a side note, despite only having 3 mounting holes for the cooler now, the AIO cooler is working much better than before with the proper application of thermal paste as opposed to the included thermal pad that came with the AIO. Upwards of 5-10 degrees. I had no idea these pads were so bad, but perhaps it makes a bigger difference on these huge Threadripper chips where you need the maximum coverage of the cooler. One thing to note, my Corsair RGB pro DIMMs will have to go since they are too tall for the cooler (though the older Corsair RGB DIMMS with the fins seem to fit). My DIMM.2 adapter for the M.2 drives will have to go as well, but I was expecting that. I hope the cooler makes it worth these compromises.

The IceGiant P12's are not the same stock P12's. these ones can go to 2300 rpms, standard P12's are limited to 2000 rpm. (IIRC) Which would help with the higher pressure needed for 650+ fin cooler. @@Powerman293 If I understood the video correctly, the Icegiant would be overkill for that and the Noctua should be fine for ~100$ instead of 170$.

@@RyTrapp0 I understand your point on raw output, however the point I made remains - the consumer Ryzen chips are a different layout entirely to either Intel's or Threadripper CPUs. It is clear the CPU layout makes a difference - it lost out to an NH-D15 in the Intel scenario. Actual test numbers would arguably be more accurate than speculation.

I pre-ordered the Ice Giant quite early for around $120. I have a 5950x (16 core/32 thread). It hovers in high 30s, low 40s while working from home on it. Not to different when playing my games, because it's bored. When I do CPU intensive activities (rendering edited video), it creeps up to high 70s/low 80s.

It's May 12th 2022, and ICE GIANT now has the retention mechanism for LGA1700; this means that it's good to go for use with a 12900KS setup. Not only does it clear the CRUCIAL 128GB DDR5 RAM KIT, but also has enough space for the RTX 3090 Ti Founder's Edition, because the VRAM is now all on one side. If you put it on an MSI Z690 UNIFY, and 1600W 80+ Titanium Certified PSU, it will make for one bang up machine, while remaining under $7,000.00 (U.S.) for the build!

Why complain?! Just buy something decent, really ANY cooler for over 25 bucks will be better than this crap. Or if it's an option, upgrade to AMD, with their *p e r f e c t* included cooler. I use one for over two years, it is truly amazing for something which is provided to you for basically no extra cost.
@7rich793 жыл бұрын
Alternatively, try playing around with fan curves. People often try to make the CPU as cool as possible, but unless you are getting into thermal throttling, you might be getting a better experience by letting the CPU run 15-20 degree warmer but have less fan noise. Another thing to check out is something I discovered with my Arctic fans. If they run at 1100rpm, no noise. 1300rpm, again fine. At 1200rpm I would get a strange resonance sound. So by spending a bit of time you may find the best balance.

@@ThisDique The Fed printing more money isn't creating free money. It's debasing the money that's already in existence. The value of the chip doesn't change. At any rate, I ended up getting a Ryzen 7 3700X and don't intend to upgrade it for a while.
@staudachers33 жыл бұрын
It does not work well on the the 5000 series units. I have one on a 5950x and it ok during normal use it is a little better than a D15S. But it can’t keep up with over clocking. The large aluminum cold plate works fine for the threadripper but it doesn’t absorb heat very well from the smaller CPUs. If it had a copper cold plate it would be better.

@@tristan6509 you don't understand that the economy has worked this way for probably more than half your life. Zimbabwe was never a reserve currency so they're not at all the same. Better go invest your money or buy some commodities before the correcting of the markets happens.

Fair warning for those who want to use this with the TR PRO and WRX80 motherboard (in vertical orientation). The WRX80 rotates it's CPU mount by 90 degrees, so it will not work in this orientation vertically, unless of course you plan to use it like a test bench horizontal.
