Wow! I broke down on the lake 6 miles from the ramp with the wind at my back. I had to be towed in by 3 guys in a 24ft fishing boat. I diagnosed the charge coil and when I finally got the flywheel off my 1986 30 HP Evinrude the dreadful black ooze was there. Parts on order I suspected the thermostat and discovered the clogged up water jacket on the head. Now I see I have another water jacket I need to remove and clean out physically. Thank you so much for the video and explicit information. I may try to use "Rydlyme" if I can figure out how to do it. LOL Leg off and thermostat out and get another gasket for the head water jacket. Thanks again for a great video. 😃

I may have a clogged jacket, too, on my 1994 E30ELERM. After an impeller and thermostat replacement, my tell tale is only peeing out hot air. Considering doing a smoke test now that I have the exhaust cover off. Thoughts? I should also re-verify that my water tube is properly aligned.

Good day very good explanation. I’m working on a 1973 Mercury 500 50 HP I started the engine after several years of it sitting. I initially got water out of the telltale then started it again and no water. Changed the impeller still no water, pulled the pipe plug out of the water jacket at the head lots of water came out. Checked the telltale hose no blockages. I suspect the blockage to be in water jacket somewhere near the telltale outlet? Any thought’s? Thanks

Thank you sir, very informative. I have a 2002 2 stroke 90hp Yamaha that isn't moving as much water as I think it should. I know it was primarily used in saltwater and very shallow saltwater at that. It was flushed every time with fresh water, but I think it needs to be de-scaled. Your video helped me to understand what's going on in my motor. I'll remove the t-stat and pump impeller and set it up for a continual flush of a de-scaler to see if I can't clean out a lot of those deposits. Thanks again.

It made a huge difference. My tattletale was barely dribbling even after I put in a new water pump. I flushed her for about 6 hours using a mixture of Simple Green Lime Descaler and water. After I dropped the lower unit, I rigged up a cheap fountain pump in a big wash tub and set it under the outboard. I hooked the output of the fountain pump to pipe that the water pump connects to using clear plastic 1/2 ID tubing. When I powered the pump up it forced this mixture through the whole water jacket and back out the bottom of the motor. The wash tub caught it all and just kept it recirculating. There was a ton of crap in the bottom of the wash tub when I got done. BUT, the proof was how she peed when I was done. Before there was barely a dribble out of the tattletale, now, she flows like I would expect. I actually have videos of before and after the flush. Just no way to attach them to this reply. I put in a new thermostat after I was done flushing the motor. Thanks again for the video and the inspiration, though to be fair, I think regular old vinegar would have been just as effective as a flush media and a lot cheaper than the Simple Green. Just wouldn't have smelled as good. Before 6 hour flush kzbin.info/www/bejne/oWS1kqijbMtlhpo After 6 hour flush kzbin.info/www/bejne/g4O2coRnmdyCg80 Made a huge difference!

Great video, it steer my suspicions toward the exhaust cover and it's gaskets. My Chrysler 15hp was overheating and water from the back of the motor stopped flowing with increase of rpms. The gases from exhaust pushed cooling water from the passages because of blown gaskets. Some people suggested that it's caused by new water pump impeller which had less fingers(six) versus old ones having ten but I thing it's bad gaskets

Thanks for the information. The water is always coming out my telltale drain cold. I thought there might be something wrong with my thermostat but your video indicates that the drain is before the thermostat and not after. Is there a way to check if my 1987 Johnson outboard model # j20cro is running at proper temperature? I am running in a cold fresh water (lake superior). I am able to put my hand on the engine block and it only feels warm even after a couple hours of run time. I have checked after high speeds with little change. I do a lot of trolling speeds(2 mph).
@OmFishing5 жыл бұрын
The water coming out of the tell tale drain after running for a while should at least be a little warm. If that was my engine I would ether check the thermostat or replace it. Proper engine operating temperature the engine burns fuel and runs better. You can get build up on the in side of the engine running it to cold. They do make a Thermomelt stik that heat sensitive marker that melts on contact with a surface of a specific temperature. You put that on the top cyclinder head. Your inlet water temperature has to be around 70. Some people will take a digital pyrometer and check the head temperature after a test run of 3000 rpm for five minutes. The temperature should be around 140. There are different test for different temperature. That is a lot of testing for hot spots. So to answer your question ether take your thermostat out and check to see if it is opening and closing or just replace it. Stay Safe.

I have a 1972 Mercury 650E 3 cyl. I have a water oil whitish foamy liquid coming out the upper starboard engine mount. I removed the power head and exhaust plate from the middle section drive shaft housing. There was only a little water near the engine mount. I have a few questions. Is it normal to have water below the exhaust plate? Where does the cooling water get expelled from the power head? Does the water drain down around the exhaust tube down and through the prop? Today I plan to remove the exhaust plate to make sure that the gasket is not leaking water to below the exhaust plate and onto the engine mount. I plan to replace the upper engine mounts or packing U cup if the mounts look OK or both. Is it normal to have some water mix with exhaust causing the whitish foam to come out somewhere? I also plan to replace the water pump impeller since I found a few bits of rubber in the port just below the elbow pee vent on the port side of the engine. Your guidance and comments are greatly appreciated.

@OmFishing6 жыл бұрын
I didn't think this one look to bad. 95% of its life has been used in salt water.
@Texcajun066 жыл бұрын
Here's what gets me, salt is highly soluble in fresh water. A simple flush of fresh water after you've been in the salt water should dissolve all of the salt in your motor. You ever taste the water coming out of your pisser while you are flushing with fresh water? It's as fresh as the water going in. I think what most guys are seeing when they tear into their saltwater motors is lime, sand, shells and other mineral deposits. I recently flushed my motor using a fountain pump and a lime descaler. It knocked a lot of stuff out of my motor and made a huge difference in the amount of water that came out of the pisser. Pretty sure vinegar on a continuous flush would do the same thing.

Question I have a 1990 Johnson 40 and water is coming out fine at idle however my buzzer comes on if I speed up the rpms it quits buzzing. Can my idle be set to low and could that make it overheat? I don’t trust the tac to be correct it’s says I’m idling at 500 rpms. Also running kind of ruff. Or do you think the water impeller is bad or going out.?
@OmFishing4 жыл бұрын
My first question is when you say fine. Is it a strong flow or a fine spray. If it is a strong flow I would check the thermostat. I have had the buzzer come on when trolling off shore for hours. At that speed the motor should never get hot with a good water pump and thermostat. The running ruff could be a lot of things. I change my spark plugs twice a season. Is the low speed jet in the carb clean. On my evinrude 30 the lower speed carb pick up was in the bottom of the bowl that way it will suck up every bit of trash in the gas. I put a good fuel filter mounted in the boat. The idle speed on a 30 hp is 650-700, The idle speed on a 40 hp is 725-775. I would get a good rpm tool. The tool I use you put a little sticker on the flywheel and it will read it every time it pass the tool that is how I set mine. Hope this helped.

Om Fishing thanks for the reply I will check over the thing you mentioned. Also when I said fine I mean it flows well a steady flow. I should feel the water to see if it’s hot too. Thanks again.
@unsaltedlife59984 жыл бұрын
I replaced the water pump and it’s not running hot anymore. Just because I seen water coming out didn’t mean I was getting the flow needed to keep it cool. I also check the thermostat in a pot of water heating it up and seeing if it worked and it was okay. Thanks again for your help. Also the running ruff was a result of to slow idle speed and running hot. After I fixed the water pump and set the idle right it’s a runner again.

That has been one of my bench projects for a while that has`nt got going yet. waterpump went out on river but did`nt seem to overheat badly , So I took it home and when I opened it up it still had pressure in the lower unit and new oil. but when I changed the water pump out and started it it went and filled the lower unit with water and gases , but the lower still held pressure for over 24 hrs. now I need to teardown an find the reason for this , This was my favorite motor ran like a brandnew motor and had the lighting and charging coil in it and the main reason I wanted it it was one of the models that by changing a part it would jump from 6 hp 8 hp. But alas it may never get done.

Hello, I have an older 2 stroke 5HP merc Mariner outboard. The water coming out of the small tube on the back the engine was not a great stream. I squeezed the tube to see if it was clogged and it came out. Now the engine produces strong stream directly from the hole, but it is basically cool water, like no temp what so ever. Is that bad to be pushing that much water through the engine? If I block the hole partial with my finger the water temp increases. Should I be concerned and n ot run the engine
@OmFishing6 жыл бұрын
I would not be to concerned about to much water. Most problems come from over heating. My engine has a thermostat in side to keep it at operating temperature I did look at the break down of a 5hp merc I did not see a thermostat on the break down I was looking at. I think it would be better to run a little cool than to hot.

@OmFishing5 жыл бұрын
I don't know that I have ever seen a time on that but, remember that the rubber impeller is spinning in the impeller housing. That is way they say lightly grease the impeller cup. I am sure the grease is gone after the first time out on the lake. I try to have a good supply of water going to the motor before I start it. I am like you we know that the impeller is spinning and getting hot. In a short time it will be trashed. The last motor I worked on it would not suck water out of the tank but It would if I primed it with the muffs. Than it would start pumping out of the tank. I would say no more than ten seconds be fore shutting the motor off. I would make sure the water is higher than the pump or use the muffs and see how it does. Let us know how you make out with this. My first educated quess would be the Water tube grommet is letting the exhaust leak by. On the top of the water tube the is a water tube retainer and on the bottom there is a water tube grommet. I think one of them is not in the right place or needs replaced. Hope this helps!

@OmFishing3 жыл бұрын
I would need the model and year and know what hole the water is coming out of to help you my friend. It could be just leaking when the thermostat is opening. The exhaust cover has a hole in the top with a elbow and a hose. That is the overboard indicator. Water will run from there.

thanks for the info. what is my problem if no water comes out of that upper port, i just changed the water pump.
@OmFishing6 жыл бұрын
When you say that no water. do you mean that at the end of the hose or at the block? If it is at the block the water is not getting there. I would check that the tube is in the right place. When you put the lower unit back on did you put the water tube in the upper port first and then line up the bottom, I do it the other way most of the time. I have be told that you take the chance of missing the top port with the tube putting the bottom in first then trying to line up the top. Their is no easy answer but to retrace you steps.

I looked though my videos and did not see one showing how to put the water tube in the grommet on the bottom of the engine. I put the tube on the engine and line up the bottom when I put the lower unit on. This way you can shine a light up there to see when you are lined up.

Hi buddy ! really like the videos . I just got a 1985 9.9 evinrude electric start . The tell tale drips kind of alot but not a stream and it doesnt blow mist out of the rear exhaust hole . It has seen saltwater . I am going to check the THE THERMOSTAT it seems like the cooling system is dirty since I put it in my test tank that was clean and it has dirtied it up since I put it in the other day . I have started it 5-7 times and run it a bit hoping the system may clean out and then stop it after it gets hot . Going to buy a new themostat and I need a gasket I guess , is that the head gasket ? Am thinking about taking it out and running it without one to flush the system then putting new one in . Also is it possible my tell tale elbow could be clogged ? the elbow is covered in black dryed goup and has a white fabric underneath . Thhinking I should remove and inspect the elbow for blockage Also starts without choke but if choke is applied will not start . Has new plugs and supposedly a new impeller

Thank you for taking time to post the video. I have what appears to be the same motor being a 1996/7 25 HP Johnson. Last time I was out the motor seemed to be real hot at the end of the run to the fishing spot and it was peeing the whole time. i ran it at low speed on the way back and the water was cool the whole time peeing a decent amount. So I replaced the impeller and started it and ran it in the side yard for a few minutes. Still runs cold out of the telltale. it's warm water coming out down below. there is no thermostat in the motor. I recall in the past that the water out of the telltale would be warm. Could i have a clog in the passageways thru the motor that I am not aware of even though it is peeing well?
@OmFishing4 жыл бұрын
You could have a build up around the cylinders in side the cooling system. The thought for the day on the thermostat is that with out it the motor will not reach a good operating temperature and does not burn clean. In return the engine will carbon up over in time. Where I live it is very common to have the motor get sand in side and that is hard to flush out. That will make them run hot.
@blueheir14 жыл бұрын
@@OmFishing I've been thinking about how to flush it out. Likely will take exhaust manifold plate off as you did in video and try to force water through all the portals. I agree that it is likely there is an obstruction in some of the pathways. The boat runs in the creeks of the ICW so always in salt water. It is flushed after each run but I imagine there remains residue and buildup of salt, etc. Thank you.
@blueheir14 жыл бұрын
I took the telltale tube off the manifold plate and hooked a tube to it and injected water. Water came out a couple of small holes above and just in front of the water inlet port on the foot and maybe a little through the screen as well. would this mean that water is making it through the motor or are there other paths that wouldn't necessarily mean it's making it there?
@OmFishing4 жыл бұрын
@@blueheir1 I don't think that would tell you the thermostat is working properly. But that is a very good sign.
@blueheir14 жыл бұрын
@@OmFishing Sorry, don't mean to be dragging this out and I'm nearly done bothering you. I hooked a bait-minder pump to the fitting on the side of the motor that goes to the telltale drain hole and ran 2 parts water/1 part vinegar through the system for 1/2 hour. water came out of the hole on the left side of the foot as noted before as well as from the exhaust outlet(?) on the back side of the downshaft headed to the foot as well as around the impeller. Water was warm everywhere but from the telltale. So, i guess I'll run it in the waterway and monitor the motor to see how hot it gets. Don't know what else to do.

Gotta clean the piston /ring grooves out, the rings are stuck from excessive carbon deposit buildup inside the piston ring grooves. ( Note at 4:30 the rings aren't wiggling up &down a teeny bit w/hardly any play inside the grooves of the pistons, while hand cranking it, jerking back' n' forth or if you push each of the 3 rings with a small screw driver carefully to check if the rings are loose springing in and out of each grooves without any sticking going on). Well thats why the cylinders gonna be thrashed if You keep running it like that resulting in loss of compression. Might as well tear it apart and clean it up, replace seals, bearings all that. Then it ll be fresh again

How hot should a 2 stroke be at the back of the motor ( head ) when running on the river?? Can't find anything saying how hot they run. I have a laser heat gun and my engine is about 165 F. when I run it full throttle....that seems HOT to me. it is a 15 hp with NO thermostat. It is pumping water out the back.
@OmFishing5 жыл бұрын
This is a long answer to a short question. To check the engine temperature the MFG says to buy a Thermomet Stiks. This is like a crayon that melts a set temperature. For your 9.9- 300 hp engine you would need a 125 degree F or [52 C] stik and a 163 degree F or [73 C ] stik. Mark the top of the cylinder block near the cylinder head with each thermomet stik. The mark should appear similar to a chalk mark. Make sure sufficient material is applied to the metal surface. With the engine at normal operating temperature running at 900 rpm in forward gear the 125 degree mark should melt. If not the engine is running to cool. On thermostat equipped outboards the thermostat may be stuck in the open position causing the engine to over cool. With the engine at normal operating temperature running at 900 rpm in forward gear the 163 degree mark should not melt. If it does the engine is over heating. Check water pump. Increase engine speed to 5000 rpm. The 163 degree mark should still not melt. Hope this helps, Keep watching and Stay Safe!!

Thanks for the reply. I have a laser gun and the top of the head at the back above the spark plugs reads 165 after a SHORT full throttle run. NEW water pump impeller, I have done DOZENS....new head gasket, thought exhaust may be blowing into water jacket, new base gaskets for the same reason, new water tube grommets top and bottom, power head removed and all water jackets checked and compressed air blown through, COMPLETELY free of obstructions....still heating. Lower unit removed THREE times and grommets and impeller checked. Impeller fins turning clockwise looking down as they should. Pin in drive shaft NOT turning in impeller. STILL OVER HEATING.

I am at a loss with all that you have done. The service manual says overheating and lack of lubrication cause the majority of engine mechanical problems. I wander if some time in that motors life, maybe someone run straight gas in it. If you run your gas a little rich with oil does it run any cooler. Have you check the engine timing. Does the motor have the right propeller. Do you think it is running to lean on fuel. Just throwing some things out there. That sounds like something that would happen to me. Hang in there!
@outboardfixer5 жыл бұрын
Yes, you are thinking the SAME as me. It is a 1961 Gale 15 hp. Compression....103 and 103 EXACTLY so engine is in good shape. I checked the cylinder walls...like new. I timed the old motor with a timing tool from Richards timing tools SOO....bang on. There has GOT to be something with the water pump....I don't know what to check with it now, I have had it apart 3 times. It is not to lean...I have tried that every which way. I will find it....I don't discourage easy!!! Thanks for your thoughts.

Did you take the temperature to see if the head and around the cylinders are hot. Everything could be working just like it is supposed to. My Evinrude 225 did that to me every time I would take it out it would go into S.A.F.E. mode. I change the thermostat. I change the computer on top. I even added a second sensor on the other head so i had two temperature gauges one for each side. It still did the same. There was a short in the neutral switch. The engine thought it was over revving in neutral even know it was in gear and moving. I think you need to start with engine temp then sensors. It could be possible that the power head needs flushed.
