We have owned a MX5RF for approximately a year, and what a supercar. However, the Achilles heel with the MX5 appears to be water drainage associated with either soft top or the hardtop. A problem I am acutely attuned to, having owned a 1.8 mk2 for approximately seven years, and experience the soaking carpet syndrome. So, I would advise any owner of any generation of MX5 to tune into cleaning and maintaining the roof drainage system. This video is the best I have seen with regard to managing the RF, and is guidance I will certainly follow. In brief, love this car but do become familiar with its anatomy.

Someone needs prevent the Mazda engineers from using a garage, move them to the wet side of Japan with a Miata, and don't let them return until they have fixed all water leak issues on the Miata! Solutions could involve a 1" drain pipe and a set of snap out stainless steel mesh screens... so sad that the engineers can't figure this one out...

Hi congrats on a great car and thanks for sharing on the tips! The whole drainage system is abit of a shocker really. Given the amount of metal surrounding the "open" drain system towards the end, well isn't quite what I would expect. I am actually thinking of getting the rf later this year myself. Thanks for the video!

Thank you, this really helpful. I park outside in the PNW...I’m fairly sure something’s blocked because there’s a lot of moisture in the car right now. No wet carpets that I’ve found yet, but haven’t checked everywhere.

I wish I saw this video two years ago. My 2017 ND got flooded. The wiring harness under the passenger seat was completely submerged. $6200 in repairs. There was so much condensation in the car that the inside of the windshield was just wet. Not even foggy. Wet, dripping onto the dash. The electronics completely failed and I could only get in the car with the physical backup key. Took 39 days to get the car fixed. Two years ago I tried putting an AR15 back in the roof compartment as a hidden storage point. I remember snagging the rifle on something and forcing it all the way down. That’s probably what caused the pipe to disconnect! Only cost me $2900 after insurance and more rust on the seat frame. Great video! But I give it 1/5 stars for watching it AFTER the car died 🤣🤣😅

Welll done. Clear imaging well lit. If you can get a trombone cleaner through the grille (perhaps tge grill is removable) this can with perseverance be fiddled right through. If you do this you will wmfind that the drain hole is not on the horizontal bottom of the car but tucked round on a vertical wall (the drops you see in the image have run down that wall and onto a low point before dropping into the puddle

I have had three of these cars and never had issue with this until now and it's a mess I cannot believe how difficult it is to access this drain system at all points. I clogged both drain holes on each side of the back window with hot glue then painted the hot glue black. you never see the clogs with the top up or down. done.

Wouldn't it be a bad idea to customize a little screen type of filter to avoid any passage of debris at the source (3:29), and cleening it up on a regular basis? Great video, thanx. I'm planning to buy an RF this month.

As long as it's kept clean, should be fine. Good luck with your purchase! :)

Hi, are there any other maintenance check similar to this that long term owners of the nd rf needs to be aware of (like potential failure points or quirks of this car)? Great video btw , please keep it up on the miata videos ❤
@Killobyte4 ай бұрын
That is the main thing that many don't know to check. One other thing that is good to do is to put a little silicone grease on the top's rubber seals once or twice a year. Carefully apply it from a rag (avoid getting on paint) and let it set for a bit before closing the top. Many people like this Honda stuff: amzn.to/4c76rtZ.

I haven't checked my drains since 2019 and driven almost 40.000 km, I guess its time to check my drains, I kinda feel "moisture in the air" every morning, maybe its some water stinking And I guess I should avoid trees

Great video! Are the grille things at 7:32 plastic? Do you think a smaller trombone brush would fit through the gap? I have an ND2 which I got around 6 months ago and yet to do this trick. Already have a trombone brush ready to go but so far my drains are still looking clear (2300 miles now and garaged at home and at work). I was thinking to just raise the rear roof part and put the trombone brush in from the opening at 3:00 in your video. I didn't realise there was a grille at the opening though so I imagine it would take a bit of luck feeding a trombone brush in through that area hoping it goes in between the grille type thing so it actually gets into the pipe below. Oh and don't forget the fuel filler area has a drain pipe too though that one seems straight forward.
@Killobyte3 жыл бұрын
They are plastic and the gaps are pretty big. My guess is that it would fit through the gap but not 100% sure.
@austprodriver3 жыл бұрын
I can confirm that a trombone brush will fit down the grates. It goes down each one easily. But, after about 30 centimetres - a foot, even - the brush will stop. This is due to the drain hose going into a kink, before exiting the car - which is about 10 centimetres.

do you think that during a heavy rainshower, the drains can get overflooded and fill up the car?
@Killobyte8 ай бұрын
It's possible if it is very heavy rain at the right angle. More possible if the drains are dirty.

I’ve only had my 21 RF for 6 months. Three carwashes and 2 days in the rain. I hear water sloshing around in the car accelerating from a dead stop and stopping at each stop sign. Floor boards aren’t wet, is there a way to find/drain out whatever is sloshing around?

If the tilt the washer too far forward when moving it (running or not), it will burn some oil next time I start it. But generally it doesn't.
