Excellent video man. Prefiltering before chemical sterilization is always advisable. You are using the "oxidizing" effect of a chlorine compound to kill the bad guys in your water. That oxidizing effect will also attack the organic matter, lessening the effect on the cysts, viruses and bacteria. If the water is very turbid, you may need to use additional chemicals to obtain a safe end product. The following are commonly used as flocculants to clear up turbid water: aluminum sulphate, ferric sulphate and ferric chloride. You may have the aluminum sulphate on the kitchen shelf. it is the chemical name for alum, used in the process of making some types of pickles. These products will cause particles in your collected water to clump together and fall to the bottom of the container.

This is accurate - that's why the directions on bleach say to clean up any visible crud / goo before disinfecting. Alum is a good flocculant, but use it sparingly. Taking lots of aluminum long term can be a problem.

Chemist here: Sodium dichloroisocyanurate (die-kloro-ice-o-sigh-an-yur-ate) is a chlorine donor. It's similar to the chemical used in pool chlorine and solid chlorine bleach. It keeps the chlorine present in the water solution as opposed to evaporating into the air.

Cannot find any info on the Delta emergency filter. Any ideas? Delta sounds like an excellent prefilter option.

Good options! Another option if backpacking in the woods is what this girl does (kzbin.info/www/bejne/bILNlmOvrNGbkJI)at the 3min mark she uses a Sawyer squeeze on top of a water bottle. Convenient as she travels and comes across a source of water.

You can purify water by running it through 5 bottles or containers each one containing one of the following elements: 1.Course sand 2.Big smooth rocks 3.Smooth sand 4.Pebbles 5.Charcoal You can make charcoal by burning wood to soft dark black. Filter the water through each element one by one starting with one. There are several videos on this method. To be 100% sure it's safe to drink boil it after.
