Interesting points! You should not believe on what is written in the watch, unless it's from a good brand. For example, I already scuba diving on the ocean with a Swatch with 30min of resistance. I was expecting to break the watch (I was testing the watch) and it passed. It was 20 years ago, and I still have this watch!

I have a citizen eco drive with 100m water resistance and no screw-down crown. Owned it about 10 years now, and I have taken it in the pool and ocean, shower, etc. Never had an issue with it as far as water getting inside. Thanks for the video Oleg!

Famous last words lol ... Good to hear you've had that luck, just remember one thing though: the seals and gaskets work, right up until they fail. Now would be a wise decision to have the seals and gaskets swapped out so you can enjoy another 10 years worry free.

I love your reviews! An important point that you overlooked is that ISO certification costs a lot of money, and, in fact, tests watches not only for water resistance, but certain other parameters as well. For this reason micro brands tend to skip it, and yet test the water resistance of their watches rigorously. Thus it is safe to assume, in my opinion, that diver watches manufactured by quality brands such as Phoibos, Zelos and Long Island Watches (for example), are indeed fit for scuba diving.

I've swimmed with multiple 30m resistant watches. Here's a quote from Wikipedia: "Movement induced dynamic pressure increase is sometimes the subject of urban myths and marketing arguments for diver's watches with high water resistance ratings. When a diver makes a fast swimming movement of 10 m/s (32.8 ft/s) (the best competitive swimmers and finswimmers do not move their hands nor swim that fast) physics dictates that the diver generates a dynamic pressure of 50 kPa or the equivalent of 5 metres of additional water depth."

Okay...I’m going to chime in as a certified lifeguard who regularly dives to practice saves in deeper water than most watch people will ever take their watches. I swim with my 50m timex expedition and it’s never had an issue. I also dive with my 100m watches. I would rather have my gshock or my duro, but I’ve never had a problem with 50m timex swimming.

I agree with nearly everything you’ve said though I’d definitely take a 100m WR watch swimming if it was from a reputable brand even without a screw-down crown (but probably not surfing). Same with a 200m non ISO if I went diving (which I don’t do anyway!). However, the entire rating really needs changing as it’s extremely misleading. I wonder how many time people have gone swimming with a pricey 30m WR watch thinking it would be more than adequate only to find water got inside and it was ruined. The manufacturers often don’t even include the rating instructions in with a new watch when you buy it which is unacceptable imo.

Based off of the "watch and learn" video on this topic from Mark over at long island watch, I can say that the amount of impact from water needed to significantly increase the atmospheric pressure on your watch would be so great that damaging your watch would be the last of your worries. Also diving at, or past, 100 meters is insane. At 300 ft below the surface you are talking about serious technical diving involving tri-mix gas and staged tanks for long decompression. Frankly a 100M water resistant watch from a reputable brand should be more than enough for SCUBA diving, no less taking a dip in the pool. Also, while showering does, in theory, stress the rubber gaskets in your watch, I have yet to see any significant evidence that it actually poses a threat to it's water resistance. If anything I have mostly seen anecdotal evidence that it is totally fine.

Very interesting. I remember I got a Fossil as a gift, it had 30m we, were it in a pool and it leaked, of course. I did not know at the time with these ratings meant. The only watch a wear in water is my G-Shock, it’s 200m wr, never had a problem with water. If you are actually going diving, the warmest the water would ever be would be in the low 80s F. In many cases professionals would have to be in very cold water. Showers or hot tubs can be way over 100 F, it is possible you could get water ingress do to expansion from high temperatures.

Expansion causing potential leaks is actually the opposite of what happens. The rubber materials the seals are made of are much more susceptible to expanding than the metal housing of the watch itself. Because the seal expands more than the housing it’s in, it actually makes an even better seal at higher temperatures

I swam with my Seiko 5 30m wr and had no problems. I don't do it constantly just a couple of times I did it. I never take a shower with a watch. Warm water and soap don't work very well on seals. I use the plastic Casio 100m wr often for swimming and never leaked.

Trial and error.. I used a Casio F91W and a Edifice while scuba diving a few years back. Dont think there is a single Casio out there that you could NOT take diving. Perhaps the old calculator.. I never dive with anything too expensive in the first place.

For over 20yrs I wore the same 100m (screw down crown but not dive watch) as a beater, insomuch as I didn’t once remove it in order to do anything in particular. Each day it would be in out of hot soapy water with frequent swimming, high impact sports use, occasional high diving (the very high feet first variety but don’t think the watch knew that) adventure stuff and lots of DIY usually resulting in being covered in paint and all manner of oil, dust grit and gunk on a fairly regular basis. When washed and buffed (plastic crystal so easy scratch removal) always looks better than new (thank you Duraglit). Never leaked and never* lost more than a second a day. *Serviced once at 15yrs. The moral... if you go diving make sure you have a proper dive computer. For everything else look after it but don’t protect it, wear it.

i worked two years as a lifeguard and used regularly my cheap vostok russian watch that is rated 3 atm. I used it to dive up to 5 meters depth(max at our pool) and i also fan of sauna and russian saunas up to 120celcius degree. Worst that happened, i ruined my leather strap due to water and chlorine. Oh also hot tubs. Doesnt leak and i still wear this vostok while i am writing my comment.

Informative video. I never swam in water under 100-meter water resistance, the depth ratings are different than the build quality for sure. I take my cheap Casio's for swimming the plastic ones. If it breaks no big deal but never had a problem. You made a good point about taking them in the shower. I never have done that but I did not realize soap can damage the seals or gaskets.

Absolutely correct. If one would a 100M watch to 100 feet diving and it floods, it will be the divers fault and have no warranty coverage. If it is an ISO rated diver watch, they are each tested and should be safe to take diving.

Beg to disagree. I have an old Timex Indiglow from my late grandfather, only 30m WR and I have washed it under running with toothbrush many times with zero issues. Same argument with 50m WR Seiko 5; swimming was not an issue, even slalom water skiing yielded no problem. The purpose built skin divers of yore were usually only 100m WR, the original Zodiac Seawolf @ 200m WR had a snap on case back and push crown.

One thing that is missing from this video, in my opinion: the process used to rate water resistance. What I mean is most people who are not into watches or who are just getting into it will take a water resistance rating at face value (ie “30 m” means I can take my watch 30 m deep, which is not true. They then don’t understand why they cannot wash the dishes while wearing that watch.

So, if a big manufacturer (say, Casio) says that their watch can withstand 100 meters, they are lying? Explain that to me. Dynamic pressure is minimal, and things are rated with extra margin. So there is no reason why a 100 m watch shouldn't be able to go that deep.

I went free diving with my 100m pulsar, at a maximum depth of approximately 10 meters. It’s still okay and I don’t have any trouble with my watch! I’m curious if you can really dive with a 100m watch at a depth of 15-20 meters. I am probably going to test it next year when I go scuba diving because the watch was inexpensive… Has anyone dived with a 100m watch?

All good advice Oleg. The only watch I wear in a swimming pool is the Casio Dura because it’s new and IF it failed (it won’t), it’s cheap to replace. Been honest that was an experiment anyway as I can’t see a good reason to wear one if your just going for a swim. Any other water based activity I never wear a watch. End of.

I wish this wasn’t the standard because it is confusing and I’m sure a lot of people have done the same thing that I did… It’s also pretty misleading… Nevertheless, we are stuck with it! Just about everything I buy now has a minimum of 100 m (With the exception of two dress watches).... most of my collection is 200 m plus… Swim with all of those and never had a problem! Hi Oleg and Mr Bond , mate I agree with everything you said about the water resistance , however I have a submariner homage by Reganld 30m with screed in solid case back and push pull crown with gaskets so I decided to test it in the pool , I've worn it in the pool every summer at least 3 times per summer and it's never let a drop of moisture or water in it so I guess it does get confusing ... My 36 year old Submariner goes swimming, sailing, snorkeling, and even takes a shower with me every day. But it also goes back to Rolex for service at the recommended intervals. I take it to the shower because taking it off in a tile bathroom is much more dangerous (that resulted in an unplanned and very expensive service) than soap and hot water, which are mitigated by regular dealer maintenance. Just my thoughts on this topic.

Because gaskets can deteriorate over time, unless you have had your watch checked for water resistance or it is new, it’s best not to wear a watch in the water. Scuba divers use a dive computer these days. For snorkeling and free diving either don’t wear your watch or if it’s 200 meters water resistant you can take your chances it will probably survive.

Interesting video Oleg. Gshocks are rated at 200m with pushers and there's video evidence to show their integrity at those depths. A bit of an oddity would be the orient mako XL I got recently that has a both a screw down crown and a pusher to change the day but is rated to 200m so I would assume the design has been pressure tested at that atm? I do like the security of a screw down crown but would have no worries with a gshock below 100m. Ps, Did you not wrap up Bonds present?🙂

Interesting.. I've took my 50m water resistant watch swimming in a pool and the sea with no issues. Also taken my 100m water resistant watch Swimming and snorkeling with no issues! Probably went about 3-4m under water. 100m isn't for diving though, Just provides better resistance for every day use. If you want a dive watch then it needs to be 200m and above. Screw down crown and case back. 30m is basically splash proof. But I wouldn't risk getting it wet tbh.

Just because a company hasn't paid for ISO accreditation doesn't mean something hasn't been built or tested to those standards. Research the testing methods used and make a decision based on that rather than general sweeping statements

TRUE - but i see some video with test up to 3km (compressor test), aliexpress watch that agarantee 1km (or 1.x km) survive 3km and work - of cousre, he test in only few min on this pressure. Watch that guarantee 300 or 200 m often - same chinese brand survive up to 1.x km - after this stop working - mechanical deformation of backgroud cap - up to 3km brek glas or deform backgroud cap too much and water leak. Profesional brand? - for 1km same as aliexpress, survive 3km and no issue , some prof. survive that say, but after 1km - broken glass, leak or stop working - but this is still OK - i have 2 aliexpress diving watch that test this guy and i am happy - mechanicla automatic watch - old fashion seiko desing - btw. seiko movement inside ;-) And funny fact - Bohemia brand PRIM on comunist time make desing copy of seico too - only not automat, but mechanical. For Branded watches even down to 30m or even it says only water resistant is safe to swim wearing them.. I am 100% confident to say this because it am already 51 years old & I do not have issues with all my watches I soak them all in water even my casio f91w, tissot prx etc.. as long as you bought it bnew its safe.. but with vintage watches it is not assured even a vintage diver watch is not safe anymore.. that is why I collect bnew watch...

Lot of myths in this video. Watch people have vastly blown the impact of dynamic water pressure out of proportion. In my experience, if a watch is new, was properly assembled and comes from a decent brand, it can handle most things. I’ve swam with 30m rated watches with no issue. A good example of this is the suunto core. A watch with a depth gauge, but “only” a 30m rating. Moral of the story, buy from a reputable brand, keep up on maintenance and don’t listen to watch forum people about water resistance lol

Mr. Bond is most beatiful Franch Bulldog in rear color in his breed and that is W-Coffee color, but mr. Bond have great size & overall muscular body in great shape, muscular neck, head and perfect muzzle with black mask, on first look people will think is a great Boston terrier, but his is great physical shape Franch Bulldog, 👌. 😉👍

It's rare to find "dive" watches rated at 100m ... for me, the 100m rating is really suited for everyday, grab-n-go watches, like a Rolex Datejust for instance. I think 100m with screw down crown is more than enough WR for any watch enthusiast. If you need something more for true diving, then get yourself an inexpensive Seiko SKX. One thing that you forgot to mention when talking about dive watch ratings - to achieve their ISO ratings, they are actually tested to withstand 125% of their stated depth. So a watch like the Omega SMP can go down to 300m plus another 25% for safe measures. I've showered with every watch I own, it's literally the easiest way to clean a watch off, especially in the summer as dirt and grime builds up. Don't do it everyday, but to do it once every couple of weeks is absolutely fine.

Are you forreal? You wouldn't swim with a 100m rated watch without a screw down crown? Sorry man, that's a bit much. Realistically, watch brands test their watches rated 100m to levels beyond 100m. I have a Victorinox Diver rated 100m, take steaming hot showers, swim, snorkel with it all the time, it comes on a rubber strap for water activities. I will go as far as saying I'd wear any watch rated to 50m in the shower/pool, and even some 30m rated watches. Never. Not once. Had an issue. These are all Japanese watches like Seiko, Orient, Citizen, and some other brands like Tissot and timex, but they have been reliable and functional in the water. It's ridiculous to only expect a 200m rated watch to be water safe, I wouldn't say making people scared to get their watch wet is really all that helpful, it might be good advice for pricier watches between 30-50m, but again, I've never had an issue with any Japanese watch rated 50m and above, generally, there should be some truth to their ratings, unless you are suggesting brands are arbitrarily slapping 50m on the dial? Again, I agree with this for Chinese mushroom brands, but citizen, Seiko, etc, if they are rating them more than 30m, generally they are safe to swim with. If you are buying a durable sports watch rated 50-100m, it fucking better be able to come into the pool with me. The idolizing of 200m rated watches is getting old, it's unnecessary.

i have a seiko 5 100m water resistant. i used it in a cold spring, then immediately moved to a hot location. water went in.

I would have started with the company caveat first. If a reputable company says 100m, I'm swimming with it. I can't create the force required to make 10x the atmosphere's standard pressure.

I do not understand the anecdotal statement regarding never taking a watch to the shower, even if the watch is certified to withstand 300m. The soap gets rinsed immediately in a shower so where is the "degradation" coming from? The shower water is just around body temperature so how is it much different than just wearing it on your wrist? I guess what I'm trying to ask is has there been any SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE regarding this statement? because to me it sounds like fitness experts claiming you need to eat 6 meals a day in the 90s and 2000's, or something that gets spread around just because.

I have a Citizen Eco-Drive diver style watch rated to 200m water resistance. I washed it with dish soap and water in a glass. Everything fine. I wiped it visibly dry with a paper towel, and then I unscrewed the crown to set the time. BIG MISTAKE. The crystal fogged up inside and after taking two weeks on a windowsill with the crown open to dry (I didn't have a case back removal tool) the hands are visibly tarnished. Fffffffffff..... :( :( :(

My opinion is that if you want to swim with your watch, buy something that hass at least 100wr and has screw-down crown and caseback. But, if you need to rescue a drowning puppy or whatever your watch should be ok if it has 100wr but only push-pull crown and is produced by reputable brand or vice versa has a screw-down crown but less than 100wr (like IWC Mark XVIII for example). If you go diving buy an ISO certified Seiko or better a diving computer. But, some guys are afraid even to wash their hands with a watch that has less than 100 wr. It is stupid. Don't forget to do pressure tests once a year or two and it will be just fine.
