I just have to say it: You are SIMPLY and without any effects and a whole bunch of complex layers and keyframes, one the greatest comunicators, teachers of animation I have come across. I was looking to make an effect such as this for a commissioned job for a client, I opened up a few tabs on chrome to videos explaining watched a couple and discarded, got to yours, and I without knowing it was you I said: Damn this is really perfect! Looked down saw your name and logo and immediately said: OF COURSE! IT'S BEN! Actually I said it in spanis and spanished your name which made me laugh: PUES CLARO! COMO NO? MI QUERIDO BENITO! ( Which is exactly: Of course, who else!? My dear Ben) Thanx a lot man, you are doing a great Job and truly can't wait to do one of your workshops.

That is just brilliant! I'm a huge fan of Texturelabs, but the displacement map method creates a certain amount of banding (even in 16 bit), whereas using the lens blur instead bypasses that issue entirely (albeit adding some waiting time to the processing). Liked and subscribed!

For those who are still on CS6 and not Creative Cloud, to create the blur map, making a solid with a gradient map wont work. Instead, drag out a square shape to cover the comp, and set the Fill to gradient. CS6 does not have Gradient Ramp, and the Blur layer target doesn't work quite the same in CS6 as it does in CC; CC allows you to specify to use the Effects property as the map, whereas CS6 you can only select the layer itself which ignores the effects. For Fractal Noise, create a Solid, apply the Fractal Noise effect, and then *precomp it*. Then you can set the Precomp you've just made as the target layer for the Camera Lens Blur.
