Watercolor Layered Landscapes

Watercolor layered landscapes. This painting was done in 4 layers, each layer building off the last to create a loose layered landscape with light effects, soft edges, dynamic sky, and bold brushwork. Learn to pour a loose and free sky, distant hills and foliage that is misty and full of lost and found edges, how to use bravura-bravery for bold brush work, and lastly some subtle finishing touches with a strong impact.
This painting is dedicated to my father. The reference photo was taken on a hike at one of his favorite places, Whitewater Preserve in California. I painted this in a way to reflect my feelings that day, wondering if he had also noticed that busted old tree in his years exploring there, feeling as if he was with me, feeling close to him even though in this life I will never see him again. Love that I have found a place to feel near to him.
Watercolor pouring is such a lovely technique to explore color blends and mixes, this painting used the following ‪@DANIELSMITHArtistColor‬ colors: Hansa Yellow Light, Quinacridone Sienna, Quinacridone Magenta, Sepia, Burnt Umber, Burnt Sienna, Pthalo Turquoise, and Pthalo Blue Red Shade with a little help from Daniel Smith Titanium White Watercolor Stick.

Thank you so much! I design my own stencils from my photography using Photoshop, then cut it out using a Cricut or tiny scissors - so this is a custom design.

I recently joined after seeing you with Angela Fehr. I absolutely love painting by dropping my pigments into water already on my paper. I’ve done that for some time. Just found you! love it! you are only the second lefty I have found demonstrating /teaching art on you-tube. it makes a huge difference for sure; I find I am always working opposite directions to right handed people- their natural stroke is left to right, and mine is from right to left. love how you made this look easy to do...and the stencil for rubbing out instead of putting in- marvellous idea. Bravura in deed- the tree looks great! Very wonderful painting to honour your father .

Again, what can I say, beautiful layering and how magical are those lost and found areas! With the addition of the foreground tree, the whole painting has a very Japanese style, I love it. ❤ Would you ever at some point do a cling-wrap painting? I have tried it on several occasions and it was hit and miss!! Ann Blockley in her Experimental Landscapes uses a variety of materials to incorporate into her backgrounds, wonderful mark-makings that she turns into foliage and other wild flora.

Beautiful technique. I need to try it. I love loose! Have noticed the last year or more that art supply prices have gone up and even more so on Amazon. I buy from Dick Blick, Jerry’s Artarama and Cheap Joes Art stuff . Their minimum order for free shipping has almost doubled recently. I’ve stopped buying art supplies from Amazon because I’ve received damaged brushes and paints and the prices are higher than the 3 shops I mentioned.
