Very helpful. As a brand new newbie (not transferring from a similar medium) I would probably also add don’t start with extremely large sheets of paper for one project. Cut it up, mask it off into sections for different small projects, that way it is much less intimidating and easier to cover well, plus saves money. And manage your shopping. You probably don’t need more than two of any major supply in case your first selection was a bad choice… like paint palettes, paper pads/books, set of paint brushes… too many options just confuses you and doesn’t give you time to really find out what isn’t working for you versus you’re just not skilled enough to make them work yet. It’s easy to turn into a supply collector instead of an actual artist/hobbiest in any arena. Consider setting yourself a financial budget for how much you allow yourself to spend upfront and for the whole year on all your hobbies to reduce the risk that you’ll get caught up in all the cool reviews and buy more than you’ll ever have time (or interest before your hobbies change again) to use.

It's easier to buy supplies than to use them to paint, sew or whatever, then we end up with so much!

Yes I agree with you. I have done that same thing as you suggested, small size paper, practice water control with painting swatches of each paint color & build up your skills, by just putting paint on the paper seeing how it works & looks.

This was so well-written! I've started drawing again and wanted to acrylic paint, then make stencils, then try out polymer clay, then bought enough clay to last a lifetime because I got overly ambitious and thought I was gonna make the entire extended family customized Christmas ornaments. After all that, I haven't gotten to do much work in any field and I get stressed often because I've spent all this money yet I don't have space in my free time to really do artwork. Life's responsibilities get in the way of my energy levels and eventually discourage me to the point where I have to buckle down and pull myself out of a slump every 4 months...this was amazing advice! Thank you!!!

Thank you so much for saying these things out loud! I wish more people would, even in art groups, you see someone painting their grandchildren or friends' kids ending up looking like 70-year-old preschoolers. And nobody dares tell them, even nicely and politely, because of hurt feelings. I just feel bad also for the painter later when some relative just blurts it out without thinking, while they could have had the chance to get proper feedback while they were learning to paint these subjects. And that harsh critique from a loved one will be devastating.
@natlisan2 жыл бұрын
I couldn't agree more with your tips Michele! I've been painting for over 20 years now and portraiture is tricky even as an experienced painter. I take my reference image and actually remove some of the detail with a blur filter, It allows me to judge the values easier without getting bogged down in detail. I find this tool really helpful especially as a watercolour artist, it keeps me from overworking the painting.

Great tips, thank you! Three decades ago I was a beginner to watercolor painting. Without any understanding of the proper processes on watercoloring I just decided to have a go. My first and last subject I painted was a carnation flower which I flattened in a book and I painted it. My mother still has it and it is recognizable as a carnation. I used mixed media paper, a basic watercolor palette which came with a paintbrush (I’ve forgotten the brand). I kick myself for not continuing watercolor painting as a hobby, and only starting again this year. Anyway, I really enjoyed the whole process and for a beginner my carnation wasn’t a bad attempt. My tip is basically the same: keep the subject matter simple; in addition use a basic palette and preferably watercolor paper, but mixed media paper will work.

Hi Michele I love your sense of humour. I'm in stitches laughing here as you were talking about painting babies. Thank you for videos and advice. It's great to have a great art lesson and a good laugh at the same time. Although I know you're fairly serious in most of your videos. I've watched quite a few and I'm very impressed. But you do have a great sense of humour and you do make sense at the same time. This is a brilliant video. I wont be trying the alien babies just yet. Babies I don't think would be my idea of an hour of pleasure trying to draw them or paint them. I think I'll leave them to the professionals. Or at least people with way more expertise. I agree some things you do have to work your way up and it does take time. I did do a lot of art years ago but circumstances stopped me in my tracks and when one thing was over something else came that stopped me and that went on for quite a few years. And I lost the ability to do it somewhere along the way. But I never lost my love for art . I got a B+ in my O level exam years ago which I am very proud of and I loved art classes at school, I want to get back to that again place in my heart again. I could not wait to get into that art room. I know I cannot go back to school again!!!! But in a way watching these videos are as good as being in that classroom again. Even better because so much has changed. There's so much more variety in the paints, the brushes. The different papers, so many new techniques. It's a whole new beautiful world. I love it. I'm starting as a beginner again. But I know I have it in me to get better and these videos are a great help to me to do that. Things have changed but it's so much more fun trying out everything new. Years ago it was the same old paper for everything and I dont know how many times it tore on me for trying the wet on wet. It was a pain in the ... ah .yeah you know what I mean! 😄😄😄😄Love your videos Michele keep them coming. Much love and God bless you. Susan xxx👍❤❤❤❤😄😄😄💖🕊🕊🕊

Yeah you're right about forgetting about school, it was a long long time ago and I can't live in the past. I can only go forward. And you are a great example to learn from. As I said before Art has changed so much and there's so much more to learn about, and thank God for the internet to be able to learn these things. I'm like a kid in a sweet shop. For a lady that says she did badly in school you've well made up for it now. I love the way you teach. It's great to have some humour in with the art. That would be interesting to have someone in stitches laughing and try to apply paint at the same time. There could be a brand new technique in that🤣🤣🤣🤣. How would that turn out I wonder. 😄. @valasafantastic10552 жыл бұрын
I agree but I can do all this now. Here are some tips to help if you want to try anyway or how to learn to get to this ability 1) trace. Always admit when you trace (don’t lie). Use ‘red lining’ to study and learn. Really pay attention Don;t just do it mindlessly and become dependant. For each tracing you do, do at least two free hand attempts at the same/similar subjects. This is especially helpful for buildings/perspective learning and dogs/babies. 2) make a greyscale version of the reference to help E understand the tone aside from the colours 3) consider a slight blur on a reference to really ‘see’ the main form and not focus on the tiny unimportant details. 4) study/do many sketches and studies. Studies of parts of and the structure of things. Want to paint that ancient hyper detailed church? Do as many pages as necessary of sketches and paintings of the ‘parts’ and ‘structure’ overall shapes, window details, roof details, etc. then try a full painting. Repeat until you succeed! For animals; study them in motion/nature documentaries/real life. Use multiple references. Study the skeletal, musculature and shapes/proportions, etc. Don’t give up/or expect good results for a while. Try try again. Fill a sketchbook spread with parts of that ‘dog’ just the eyes then the ear then a cartoony overall body shape, the paw, the nose; now try the whole head. Etc. 5) don’t share art in-line/with others unless you are really proud AND willing to be torn down/insulted but not give up! If being insulted about the art you shared would truly cause you harm or to stop making art DON’T SHARE YOUR ART WITH ANYONE! Be willing for tons of praise and insult. Or don’t share. 6)take more time. It takes the time it takes. And do practice/studies of parts then go back to the main painting. Even part way through a painting of a building. Go do separate window studies if you need to, then go back and paint the windows. Stop expecting it to be fast or easy. And even if this painting ‘fails’ try, try again! 7) Don’t take a commission for subjects you are not 100% certain you can do a great job on. Even if you mastered dogs if you haven’t ever painted a baby. Don’t take a commission for a baby portrait. I still would think twice about baby portrait commissions… and also don’t feel pressured to lend or sell original art to others unless you really are willing to let it go and never see it again. If you do sell originals remind yourself they are in a good home with people who appreciate them. It’s 100% ok to be very emotionaly attached to your art and to keep it all and choose not to sell originals! Also it can be a hobby and does not ever need to be sold if that’s what’s better for your mental health and what ;feels right’ to you. 8) paint what brings you joy. Don’t paint what ‘peer pressure’ tells you too. If people keep advise you paint things you have no interest in painting; unless they are paying you a LOT of money, don’t. This can lead to hopelessness, anxiety, guilt , fatigue and ultimately burnout. This is the number one cause of people giving up art (temporarily or permanently) I Don;t care if your grandma wants their granddaughters portrait for her 90th birthday unless YOU have the joy/inclination, time AND skill to do so; don’t it’s not worth it. Also don’t give art away for free except as a present or art exchange. Don’t devalue professional artists who are already undervalued/underplayed. Life costs money, charge money as making art costs life! Now if you are full of joy and make a bunch of ACEOs and really want to give them to friends/family and random strangers who are kind; sure. But don’t do free commissions (especially ones used for profit by a business!) art contests (where they legally keep all the art/copyright and only give prizes to the top winners), etc. Really think about the ethics of if it’s ok and where such free skilled labour leads when the world is full of extreme greed and abuse. Don’t undervalue you life, time/skill EVEN if you are not that experienced are young or newer to art! Forgive past transgressions and attempt to do better moving forward. 9) if a difficult subject truly is what brings you joy do my tips but be willing to be patient for results and also willing to use mixed media. 10) also some subjects other ‘say’ are easy may be difficult for YOU. That’s ok just practice and do more studies. 11) study from artists you like and learn from them BUT Don;t expect to BE them. Pay attention your own style/strengths and weaknesses! 12) keep literal written notes with painted and drawn notes. Write down mixes that work. Keep colour gradient and mix notes! As well as clearly labeled swatches. Name brand and pigment codes! Have swatches to match each pallet. 13) make your own custom pre-mixed colours! 14) use make up brushes! I’m serious even cheap dollar store ones. They will improve your painting life! 15) it’s just as valid to paint stylized. Use multiple references or paint more direct copies/hyperrealistic. Just as valid to paint abstract, imaginative realism, fanart and even work in multiple styles! It’s all art as long as it’s created by a human with the intention of creating art! Don’t let anyone insult your style/subject. Or call something you enjoy ‘not art’. They are wrong! Anime is art, abstract is art, hyper realism is art, semi realism is art, 1930’s early animation, cave peoples paintings of long extinct wholly rhinoceros! All ART!. It’s ALSO ok to dislike or even personally despise Certain art styles. Please Don’t insult the artist however just say nothing. It’s still art! It could be political or just beautiful, tell a story or be a scientific render of a plant. Like what you like, dislike what you dislike but let’s not deny it’s validity and others right to love even styles you hate. Have fun everyone!

This is a great list! Instead of feeling discouraged beginners should work on the fundamentals for each topic and practice them. Anatomy, perspective, color theory. Many of the topics you mentioned require a combination of these, plus an understanding of how watercolor move, interact, and dry. My introduction to watercolors was through plein air sketches of buildings as an architecture student, so it was counterintuitive to what you are explaining, that said, we were taught to draw buildings and shade them in school. The watercolor washes just gave the sketches a bit more volume. It would take me years to explore watercolor techniques more fully.

But I'm not one to try to paint or even one to want to be with babies too much, so don't stress about that with me (but I hear you on the churches and the perspective! I'm never so mean as to write in a comment what I think about the painting but I have to laugh when someone posts a painting of a baby looking completely off and people write comments like "you're so talented" or even worse "you should sell it". If someone asks if something is wrong with the painting one should politely (!) tell them what they could improve. But to praise someone for a "bad" painting is only allowed before they turn 3 😆

As far as buildings and prospective are concerned I found myself in a deep crisis when a tutorial, that was meant for beginners, showed how to paint a floating market with a lot of buildings facing everywhere and signs on them facing somewhere else... Well it's easy to say "simplify everything" but in a first instance, before of simplifying you are supposed to know how to draw it realistically... Then you simplify, impressionist decided to make a revolution after learning academic painting, it's a process. Even if I studied the basics of perspective, I still don't feel comfortable in it so I decided that the best thing to do was to snob that particular tutorial. And between you and me, looking at the reference photo I found mistakes in the perspective in the painting the tutor made that confused me a bit... Anyway 😜 I appreciate your tips and always enjoy your videos

I so agree with you, especially on babies and pets! My first pet was my dog, 11 lbs of longe white hair - ended up like a demon dog, not fair at all to my sweetie. Have done a couple of successful pups since, including one for my daughter that turned out well, but still haven't gone back to try another of my little lady! The mental image of that first one... nope, not happening!

Well I think I've attempted all of these as since I started painting in July of 21. The only saving grace I have had is my family knows I can't see detail so they're not at all offended if what I'm drawing or painting for them is blurry. But now that I understand what you have shared it makes a lot of sense and I appreciate it very much thank you Michelle.

Oh boy did you hit the nail on the head. Some of the work I regularly see posted on FB watercolour groups is shocking. A simple case of people with budding talent biting off more than they can chew. Start small folks; you will improve in due time with practice.

This video was so funny! I have only been doing art for about 1.5 years, and I have tried: street scene with many buildings and perspectives (disaster!), dogs (because I have a service dog - she is a type of German shepherd and VERY hard to draw!), and the flat washes! Really, this made me laugh at myself and remind me to take my time working up to things. Thank you.

😁🤣🤣Ohhh my goodness 😂 Perspective by Satan…yes I am still talking to you. 💕 I definitely needed the laughter today. Yes I have been guilty for trying some of these subjects starting on my painting journey. Luckily after taking quite a few of you online courses my skills are greatly improving. I have yet to do a commission painting. Thanks for sharing this wonderful video.

I'm a proud owner of several zombie babies, wonky pets and dodgy sunsets. Took me an embarrassingly long time to realise that watercolour is not the same as oils or acrylics! Thanks for the giggle 😃

😂😂😂 I am soooo glad you have addressed the babies and dogs! I am still a beginner a relatively new to the watercolour groups but I am having baby alien and baby zombies nightmares already. And the doggos, haha! My boyfriend asked why I haven’t painted my chihuahua yet. I think I will scroll through Facebook and demonstrate the point to get my message across 😂 I do really hope I will be able to give it a go at some point though 😭

A video I actually found very useful. I have been contemplating moving from botanicals to skies but after hearing the logic behind why I shouldn't....well, I am just going to keep on practising. 😅 Maybe next time you could add some examples of zombie babies and messed up skies? And I'd love a video where you talk about the opposite: where to start as a beginner. As a beginner I find plants a very forgiving subject.
