Tearing the sheet! So much easier than cutting with a box knife and straight edge! Thank you!

This video was very important to underline something I’ve realized over the years - no point using non-cotton paper to 'try out 'an idea or 'just see if the colours are right'. It leads to disappointment. One thing I would love you to give us a lesson on is to take a chosen reference photo of your own , that you like, and show us step by step what to include, ignore, simplify, and change to make it a good painting and not a copy of a photo. I’ve learned many skills over the years but these doubts persecute me every time. Thanks very much Matt

Hi Matt. Thanks for doing this video. This was really helpful. I tried using your approach to cutting the paper and it works better than all the other approaches I used.

Is it necessary to tape the torn sheet to a flat surface when painting? I thought if it wasn’t secured to a pad the paper would warp more. Perhaps not?

Hi Matt! New subscriber here. Can you please make a video explaining a bit about selling physical water paintings in this digital age. I tried digital art for a while, but I realized it isn't for me as they take a toll on my eyes. I like to hold the brushes and experience the feel of painting on a real paper, but at the same time I would like to sell those pieces too.

Thank you. Great to see a simple way of dividing paper. I have seen many more complicated ways with using water that has never worked for me.👍🏻

hi Matt... very good what you said...here in Brazil this material is quite expensive and, as I am still a beginner, using watercolor pencils, or tubes, India ink... I use canson Montval 140 lb, 100% cellulose. ..and on top of that I use the other side for tests, etc...I thought I was a cheapskate, a tightwad.... 100% cotton I leave it to the professionals....hehe

Thanks Matt. I never thought of tearing the paper. In your opinion which brand will make removing the paint easier ?

Hi, your videos really resonate with me. Thank you. May I ask what your easel is made of that makes it waterproof for you to use wet paper on?

Great info Matthew! How many time would you do the same scene if you’re not satisfied with the result? For me, after 3rd time if it doesn’t turn out the way I wanted it to be I quit and move to the next one. But that does leave some kind of unfulfillment

Be careful, I found out that hot pressed paper makes the paint behave quite differently than cold pressed. Some techniques you see executed on cold pressed might not work on hot pressed and vice versa.
@natlisan2 жыл бұрын
Very true! With hot pressed I prefer to go with at least 300lb paper. It has a bit more texture than the 140lb and behaves a bit more like cold pressed, meaning that you have more working time.
@MM-dw5ir2 жыл бұрын
I like using gouache and ink better on hot pressed paper

Regarding fingerprints, h 3:28 and cleaning is extremely important to me. If we go out to eat nobody gets back into my truck without washing their hands, because, my seatbelt belts will stink. One time my dog chewed my seat belts and half because they smelt like hamburgers.
