Blessings in your new studio! It is always so interesting to hear the reasons why artists choose their supplies. I am using up my cadmiums, but Paul Clark still uses Cad Yellow to mix all his greens. He commented to me that he learned with it and was comfortable knowing the properties. Denise Soden (embracing opacity palette suggestions) recommended using Cerulean Blue and Indian Red mixed to create a lovely soft gray. It works, so I get to use up some colors I would not have ordinarily used. The late Diane Maxey taught in a workshop that kneaded erasers are actually pickups, and to dab the pencil lines as opposed to rubbing.

@@joykruczay Interesting! I try to avoid cadmiums due to toxicity but I can't live without cobalt!

FYI, My favorite cereleun blue is from Sennelier. It is a more expensive pigment than the other cerelean blues, and it is sooo beautiful, you will have no problem reaching for it!

I love seeing what supplies you use Rachel! I have another paper suggestion for you to try if you haven't already! Another amazing paper which takes a fair bit of abuse is Saunders Waterford 140lb CP! It's also comparable in price to Arches.

I will have to try it. for some reason I had the impression that winsor and newton did not make good browns, but it looks beautiful and I like that it is non staining.

You art work is so lovely. I get so scared to even try to do paintings like this . I don’t know why. I’m afraid to draw on the watercolor paper because I don’t want to keep erasing but I’m also afraid to trace onto it because if I ruin it, I spent so much time on drawing and tracing. I know, I make no sense. I’m even afraid of messing up on my sketchbooks! It holds me back so much. Because how am I ever going to get better if I don’t practice and make mistakes? I know there are many people out there who feel the same way as I do. And it’s so sad how we hold ourselves back.

Get some hippiecrafter student grade (but decent) watercolor paper and get painting! That's what I do when I get in a scared rut for fear of ruining 'good' paper

Don't let perfectionism hold you back. Making a start is a third of the work . Maybe you could try to just enjoy doodling in watercolour without attatchment to the result . Playing basically. As a side effect you'll be practicing brushstrokes, paint to water ratios, colour combinations without fuss the whole time. And you can morph your doodles whatever way you feel like. Or if you want to often draw complex things with high accuracy without alot of erasing maybe you might like to see if there is a camera lucida app that works for you ( I have a neo lucida somewhere and a pantograph) Some artists prefer to keep all of their sketching lines visible too. Perfection is not necessarily going to be the appealing aspect of an artwork.😊

@@margaretpinsent6388 I have a studio at home. But my husband works from home a lot. So if I need to do video work where I have complete control of my environment and quiet, I need my own space. My studio at home is in the living room and I can't close a door and disappear into my creativity when everyone is home.

7:20 you say cerulean blue is an earth pigment. It is not, it's a cobalt color.
@rachelsstudiodotcom
@rachelsstudiodotcom Ай бұрын
Oh interesting! It certainly acts like an earth pigment in that it granulates and greys down whatever you mix it with.
@rachelsstudiodotcom
@rachelsstudiodotcom Ай бұрын
Here's what handprint.com has to say about cerulean - "This makes the cobalt cerulean and turquoise paints in many respects the "earth colors" on the cool side of the palette, providing texture, color stability, and muting effect to the brighter and more strongly tinting synthetic organic pigments. You should evaluate them from that point of view, and not just on their unmixed, full strength color appearance."
